Sandy Denny laid down the marker for folk-rock when she joined Fairport Convention in 1968, but her music went far beyond this during the seventies. After leaving Fairport she formed Fotheringay, whose influential eponymous album was released in 1970, before collaborating on a historic one-off recording with Led Zeppelin - the only other vocalist to record with Zeppelin in their entire career - and releasing four solo albums across the course of the decade. Her tragic and untimely death came in 1978. Sandy emerged from the folk scene of the sixties - a world of larger-than-life characters such as Alex Campbell, Jackson C. Frank, Anne Briggs and Australian singer Trevor Lucas, whom she married in 1973.     SANDY DENNY UNDER REVIEW: An Independent Critical Analysis, Limited Collectors Edition The difference between a critical analysis of {$Sandy Denny} or {$The Velvet Underground} and {$The Rolling Stones} is that with a lot less information available on this extraordinary singer the audience is more limited. The good news is that this edition of the "Under Review" series actually lives up to the documentary status it claims, and does, indeed, hold one's attention and inform better than the {^Green Day: Under Review 1995-2000 The Middle Years}, which is basically a bunch of critics blowing lots of hot air. It seems with these "DVD/Fanzine" type commentaries that the lesser known the subject matter, the better the critique. Denny is a singer that deserves so much more acclaim and study, and this is an excellent starting point, as is the {$Kate Bush} "Under Review", and even the {$David Bowie} {^Under Review 1976-79 Berlin} analysis which concentrates on his dark but fun period. {$Fairport Convention} fiddler {$Dave Swarbrick}, journeyman {$Martin Carthy}, {$Cat Stevens} drummer {$Gerry Conway} of Denny's band, {$Fotheringay} and {$Pentangle}'s {$John Renbourn} contribute as does {$Fairport Convention} biographer {$Patrick Humphries}. That's the extra effort missing in some of these packages which makes this close to two hour presentation all the more interesting. Perhaps more important than the very decent {$Kate Bush} analysis by the {^Under Review} team, there's a "Limited Collector's Edition" with a cardboard slipcover. It's a very classy presentation and a very important history that deserves shelf space in any good library.

    Folklore 115 (December 2004): 286–308 RESEARCH ARTICLE A. L. Lloyd and Reynardine: Authenticity and Authorship in the Afterlife of a British Broadside Ballad Stephen D. Winick Abstract This paper presents new evidence concerning the broadside ballad “Reynardine,” which became popular in the British folksong revival movement of the 1960s and 1970s. It argues that the revival versions of this ballad were not products of the folk tradition, but rather descendants of a text authored by A. L. Lloyd, who was both a singer and a folksong scholar. The paper goes on to suggest reasons why Lloyd might have authored the ballad, and reasons why he might have concealed that authorship, placing its evidence and observations in the context of folkloristic concerns about authenticity and authorship, folklore and fakelore. Yet, “authentic” in folklore has usually meant the opposite: that which is made by no discernable hand, imbued with no individual’s authority, because it has been re-made by the forces of impersonal tradition (Bendix 1997, 15). While “authentic” and “author” share an etymological root, authorial practices are usually taken to produce inauthentic folklore; Richard Dorson famously coined the word “fakelore” for materials created by authors and passed off as products of folk tradition (Dorson 1969).

When Topic Records made its debut in 1939 with Paddy Ryan’s ‘The Man That Waters The Workers’ Beer’, an accordion-backed diatribe against capitalist businessmen who underpay their employees, it’s unlikely that anyone involved was thinking of the future – certainly not to 2019, when the label celebrates its 80th birthday. In any case, the future would have seemed very precarious in 1939, given the outbreak of World War II, during which Topic ceased most activity (shellac was particularly hard to source). But post-1945, the label made good on its original brief: ‘To use popular music to educate and inform and improve the lot of the working man,’ explains David Suff, the current spearhead of the world’s oldest independent label – and the undisputed home of British folk music. Tonight at the Barbican (where Topic held their 60th birthday concerts), musical director Eliza Carthy – part of the Topic recording family since 1997, though her parents Norma Waterson and Martin Carthy have been members since the sixties and seventies respectively - has marshalled a line-up to reflect the passing decades, which hasn’t been without its problems. ‘We have far too much material, given it’s meant to be a two-hour show!’ she says. ‘It’s impossible to represent 80 years – you’re talking about the left-wing leg, the archival leg, the many different facets of society - not just communists but farmers and factory workers - and the folk scene in the Fifties, the Sixties, the Seventies..

    Sandy Denny: Under Review (Sexy Intellectual Production) This one’s kind of skimpy on the archival footage (often the filmmakers choose to craft impressionistic film collages for songs to compensate), but there is such a dearth of information around about Sandy Denny, easily one of the most mesmeric singers of all time, that I consider this disc absolutely crucial. Fairport Convention vocalist Denny was a tragic folk heroine plagued by insecurity—she never felt comfortable as an artist in the spotlight, preferring to have a band she could lose herself in, (check out her song “Solo” for her lyrical take) — who was nonetheless blessed with a remarkably penetrating voice and superior songwriting talent. (She’s the only “guest vocalist” to ever appear on a Led Zeppelin record, on the Middle-earthy “Battle of Evermore.”) The disc capably illuminates Denny as an artist worthy of rabid cult status, who died under sad circumstances (she fell down a flight of stairs, eventually sinking into a coma), but who was hugely influential on the English folk scene, revered by everyone who knew or played with her. Minor gripe: The commentary by former bandmate Dave Swarbrick is largely garbled, but it appears that this is the way he actually talks—what are you gonna do? A cursory listen to Fairport’s “What We Did On Our Holidays” or “Liege and Lief” should convince anyone with a pair of working ears that the emotionally fragile Denny, with her wounded angel’s voice, was one in a zillion. Natch, the doc glosses over the more unsavory aspects of her character (she could be abusive and her drinking probably contributed to her tumble), but no matter.
