Talking Heads Stop Making Sense Blu-ray Darryl Morden Celebrated as one of the greatest Music Editor concert films of all time (alongside Family Editor movies such as The Last Waltz ), Stop Making Sense captivates again in this 25h anniversary Blu-ray release. Director Jonathan Demme created a sense of intimacy and greater scope, and frontman David Byrne was never more dynamic in a set that’s a best-of up for the band, including the definitive “Burning Down the House,” a gripping “Life During Wartime,” a swirlin’ “Once in a Lifetime,” the herky-jerky bop of “Girlfriend Is Better,” and the group’s liquid rendition of Al Green’s “Take Me To The River.” Bonus material here includes press conference; bonus tracks “Cities,” “Big Business” and the rhythmic “I Zimbra”; band and Demme commentary; and storyboards. Plus, there’s an option for various audio mixes. Five stars and more for this one. Jethro Tull Living With the Past DVD + CD Reissuing the decade-old video and album as a DVD and CD combo, Living With the Past is a warts- and-all look back at some Jethro Tull history, contrasted by what was then the current band line-up in concert. Of course, you’ll find the forever-staples “Aqualung” and “Locomotive Breath,” as well as a slice of “Thick as Brick” and the Bach variation of “Bouree.” But some of the best numbers include less-famous songs, such as “Roots to Branches” or “Jack in the Green.” There’s a reunion of the original Tull quartet line-up from 1968 that’s loose and good-natured, plus they play “My Sunday Feeling” together. In bonus collaborations, Tull leader Ian Anderson joins Fairport Convention (featuring one-time ’80s and early ’90s Tull bassist Dave Pegg) for “John Barleycorn,” and he guests with Urish Heep during “Blind Eye.” The collection also includes outtakes, gaffs and such, a “Virtual Ticket Window,” Anderson 1 of 2 10/12/2009 11:33 AM Buzzine » Music DVDs and Blu-rays http://www.buzzine.com/2009/10/music-dvds-and-blu-rays-2/ 2 of 2 10/12/2009 11:33 AM.

n o s a e P.O.V. 19S Discussion Guide Kokoyakyu: High School Baseball A Film by Kenneth Eng www.pbs.org/pov P.O.V. n o s Discussion Guide | Kokoyakyu: High School Baseball a e 19S Letter from the Filmmaker NEW YORK, SPRING 2006 Dear Colleague, It started back in January of 2001 while we were working in India on the Projectile Arts documentary Take Me to the River, about a phenomenal Hindu gathering. We wanted to make another film with Projectile Arts that would bring an inspiring cultural experience to America. Surrounded by 20 million Hindu pilgrims at the world’s largest religious festival, the “Kumbh Mela,” our thoughts naturally turned to baseball (we both grew up in Boston as hopeless Red Sox fans). Ichiro Suzuki was about to become the first Japanese position player in Major League history. We were fascinated — the whole idea of Japanese baseball was so mysterious to many Americans, and we knew it could be a great window into Japanese culture. Director Kenneth Eng Of course, Ichiro’s first season in the Majors Photo courtesy of Kenneth Eng turned out to be one for the record books — on top of the personal achievements (the batting title, the Gold Glove, the Rookie of the Year award, and Most Valuable Player), Ichiro led his team to an American League record 116 wins. We discovered Robert Whiting’s book You Gotta Have Wa and learned for the first time about Japan’s National High School Baseball Tournament, known as the Koshien Tournament for its famous stadium.

  • Design Issues with 3D Maps and the Need for 3D Cartographic Design
Design Issues with 3D Maps and the Need for 3D Cartographic Design Principles Dave Pegg Abstract Design issues regarding the presentation of geographical information in a th ree- dimensional perspective are varied and complex. This paper looks at some of issues of 3D mapping stemming from its rapid development as a cartographic tool, its growing popularity and accessibility amongst users, and the 3D cartographic principles proposed to manage the design and presentation that are not covered by traditional cartographic principles. Introduction Multimedia cartography has been propelled forward by the rapid technological advances for the capture, manipulation and presentation of geographical data, with most map products now being developed digitally. The quality and accuracy of data capture, data storage & manipulation capabilities, as well as the advancements in software, mean that a cartographer now has the ability to digitally create spatially accurate, detailed and high resolution three-dimensional maps and visualizations. The advent of Digital terrain or elevation models make available the presentation of geographical data in three dimensional space, and allowing precise modelling of not only x and y locations, but the z height creating a three-dimensional landscape. In the case of three-dimensional cartographic mapping, there are many different applications that have been designed for the creation of 3D maps and visualizations, and the development of standards and guidelines in regards to the technical aspects of such models. 3D maps can be done in several different ways, each way creating a different representation of the landscape. 3D maps can be photorealistic, where the landscape is created to match the exact landscape, using techniques of overlaying ortho-photography over a 3D model, or can be “symbolistic”, where the maps are generalized and symbols designed to show object locations and information.

  • PROCOL HARUM 2014 BIOGRAPHY Procol Harum Are Still Going Strong
PROCOL HARUM 2014 BIOGRAPHY Procol Harum are still going strong. March 2014 sees a new double CD, Inside/Outside, celebrating over forty years of studio and live recordings. In addition the spring will see a new download-only release, Some Long Road, featuring tracks from the band’s 2012 US tour. Alongside this Procol continue to tour many parts of the world, and are considering options on three continents at the moment. You could not be blamed for thinking that, with the monumental success of Procol's first smash hit, the band just stopped there, like so many others. Even the recently-awarded accolade of ‘most- played single of the past seventy-five years’ has not quelled their need to go forward: hence 2014’s new live album. In the past couple of years they have released ten re-mastered CD albums, plus the 2CD anthology Secrets of the Hive (all generally available in Europe, and sourceable on import); their DVDs In Concert with the Danish National Concert Orchestra and Live at Union Chapel have been widely acclaimed. There’s also a special 4-disc CD/DVD box-set compendium – aptly entitled All this and More – featuring 68 of the band’s many unique compositions: this prompted Classic Rock magazine to observe, ‘it’s small wonder The Who’s Tommy and Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody can be traced to Procol’s influence’. It could be termed a plethora of Procol. The quality of writing and performance has remained Procol Harum’s gold standard through the gradually-mutating line-ups: each participating musician has kept the ideas flowing and prevented Procol from resting on their laurels.

  • 1986 - Rock's Renaissance Man
1986 - Rock's Renaissance Man Written by Time From: Time magazine, October 27, 1986 Got a movie. Got a record. Got some wild, wild life. "Oh," David Byrne said, "you want to see the African fire ants?" It was deep night out on a Texas plain flat as a pan bottom and just about burned through. A recent rain had slaked the land a little but brought forth legions of ants to infest the ground and pester a nearby film set. Exterminators were summoned, ants dispatched, but one actor, arriving late, felt he had missed out on some fun. "Follow me," said Byrne sympathetically, as he grabbed a flashlight and walked into the dark. This is a man whose first great song was called Psycho Killer. A man who is the formative force behind Talking Heads, one of the decade's most formidable bands, a group responsible for the sweetest, strangest, funniest rock to roll over the '70s and nestle into the '80s. A man who should be hanging close to the set, seeing to the details of directing his first feature film, not striking out on some weird nocturnal expedition in search of hymenopterous marauders. He may not resemble the manic murderer in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, but he will never be mistaken for Mark Trail either. Is this a man to follow into the night? No question. It took a while, and a little stumbling, but Byrne found what he was looking for. He stood near a mound of earth and shone his light down and waited.
