(…)” (NÚMEROS, 12:6) “Recita, em nome do teu Senhor, que criou Que criou o homem de um coágulo Recita, pois o teu Senhor é o mais generoso Aquele que ensinou o homem pelo cálamo, ensinou ao homem o que ele não sabia.” (O NOBRE CORÃO, XCVI: 1-5) RESUMO O objetivo principal deste texto é contribuir para a compreensão da emergência do movimento profético de Muhammad na Península Arábica do século VII E.C., por meio da investigação da sua relação com as comunidades e culturas judaico-cristãs presentes na península. Partindo de um panorama sociológico e antropológico dos seus habitantes, bem como de suas estruturas políticas, o texto prossegue por uma investigação dos indícios da presença de comunidades judaicas e cristãs na região, e o delineamento de algumas de suas características, tanto políticas quanto culturais. Para tanto, utiliza-se de um corpus documental variado, envolvendo fontes narrativas, epigráficas, arqueológicas, de origens e períodos diferentes. A partir deste levantamento etnográfico, prosseguimos com a análise dos muitos movimentos políticos proféticos árabes, contemporâneos ao de Muhammad, e seus personagens principais – aos quais a tradição islâmica atribui o status de falsos-profetas. É de nosso entendimento que a análise cruzada desses fenômenos, relativamente pouco estudados, contribui para o esclarecimento do meio político-cultural em que o profeta do Islam pregaria sua mensagem, e, em última instância, para uma melhor compreensão dos fundamentos e limites do Proto-islam. ABSTRACT This text's main purpose is to contribute to the understanding of the emergence of Muhammad's prophetic movement on 7 th century Arabia through its relation with the Judeo- Christian communities and cultures at the peninsula. Starting from a sociological and anthropological overview of its inhabitants, as well as their political structures, the text endeavors an inquiry on the evidences of the presence of Jewish and Christian communities in the region, and outlines some of their characteristics, both political and cultural. To do so, it makes use of a diverse documental corpus, including narrative, epigraphic and archeological evidence, with different origins and from different timespans. From this ethnographic survey, it proceeds to an analysis of the many Arabian prophetic political movements, contemporaneous with Muhammad's, and their main characters – to whom the Islamic tradition would grant the status of false-prophets. It is our understanding that the careful cross-analysis of these relatively understudied phenomena contributes to shed some light on the political-cultural milieu in which the prophet of Islam would preach his message, and ultimately, to a better understanding of the foundations and limits of Early-Islam. Janneus’s high priestly office is only implied, and that in a context that is hostile to him (War 1.88//Ant. 13.372). If one looks at Josephus’s list of high priests in Ant. 20.242, there he reports that Janneus acted both as king and priest for “twenty-seven years”. Was it Josephus who did not want to refer explicitly to Janneus as high priest in his narratives, was this dictated by his source/s, or by some other reason/s? More specifically, why is there a contrast between the narratives and the list? This study adopts source-critical, comparative, and interdisciplinary approach. It also compares Janneus with other rulers from the Hellenistic world with whom he shared many characteristics. However, certain aspects make the Hasmonean high priestly monarchy unique, dictated mainly by theological reasons. That of Janneus is an example of an institutional clash. Josephus was aware of the complexity and controversial aspects surrounding the institution of Hasmonean kingship and its combination with the high priesthood. For various reasons he chose not to identify Janneus explicitly as high priest in his narratives, but rather focus mainly on the royal policy.

The Jewish revolt against the Romans in 66 CE can be seen as the culmination of years of oppression at the hands of their Roman overlords. The first-century historian Josephus narrates the developments of the war and the events prior. A member of the priestly class and a general in the war, Josephus provides us a detailed account that has long troubled historians. This book was an attempt by Josephus to explain the nature of the war to his primary audience of predominantly angry and grieving Jews. The causes of the war are explained in different terms, ranging from Roman provincial administration, Jewish apocalypticism, and Jewish internal struggles. The Jews eventually reached a tipping point and engaged the Romans in open revolt. Josephus was adamant that the origin of the revolt remained with a few, youthful individuals who were able to persuade the country to rebel. This thesis emphasizes the causes of the war as Josephus saw them and how they are reflected both within The Jewish War and the later work Jewish Antiquities.

    The Events of 1948 and the Palestinian Refugees Summary by Ron Stockton We can learn much about history from first-hand reports. What follows are two types of reports: contemporary documents and the perspectives of those who were present, and the results of recent scholarship. There is an exceptional amount of rhetoric around these events. A polemic is an argument designed to prove that you are right and some rival group is wrong. There is a Jewish-Arab polemic and a Jewish-Jewish polemic [between the Ben-Gurion/Haganah/Labour left and the Begin/Herut/Likud right]. These polemics are only marginally included. Tessler discusses them more fully. The New Historians : When Menachem Begin became Prime Minister in 1977, he was so stung by allegations that he was a terrorist that he began to open the state archives to researchers. More archives were opened under the 50-year rule in 1997 and 1998. These produced a wave of new research based on documents, journals, reports, minutes. Israelis saw themselves as peaceful and accommodating and the Arab side as the problem. Four books shook the way Israelis saw this history. These were Simha Flapan’s The Birth of Israel: Myths and Realities; Benny Morris’ The Birth of the Palestinian Refugee Problem, 1947-1949; Ilan Pappe’s Britain and the Arab-Israeli Conflict, 1948-1951; Avi Shlain’s Collusion Across the Jordan: King Abdullah, The Zionist Movement, and the Partition of Palestine; and Tom Segev, 1949:The First Israelis. Background: Fighting in Palestine went through three distinct stages with different characteristics and different military forces.

    Eric LAUPOT THE CHRISTIANI'S RULE OVER ISRAEL DURING THE JEWISH WAR: TACITUS' FRAGMENT 2 AND HISTORIES 5.13, SUETONIUS VESPASIAN 4.5, AND THE COINS OF THE JEWISH WAR RÉSUMÉ Il a été démontré autre part que les sectateurs de celui qui, chez Tacite, (Annales 15, 44) est désigné comme Christus (i. e. les Christiani ou Nazoréens) ont joué un rôle essentiel dans la Guerre Juive contre Rome de 66-73 (cf. le second fragment des Histoires de Tacite [Tacite, fragment 2]), et que c'est en grande partie pour écraser ces Christiani et leur mouvement que les armées romaines ont détruit le Second Temple. L'article étudie, à partir de données diverses, certaines implications de cette découverte: 1) les Nazoréens étaient très vraisemblablement en charge de l'ensem- ble des Juifs, et pas uniquement du Temple, durant la Guerre Juive; 2) les Christiani de Tacite étaient sans doute la secte historique dont procède, dans le Nouveau Testa- ment, celle des Xristianoí; 3) L'homme qui est désigné sous le nom de Chrestus chez Suétone (Claudius, 25, 4) était un roi nazoréen bien connu; 4) Tacite avait rai- son d'associer les Christiani au Grand Incendie de Rome qui eut lieu en 64, ce qu'il est le seul à faire parmi les historiens antiques; 5) Un autre nom du mouvement nazoréen était «la Voie»; 6) Antérieurement au Grand Incendie, les Gentils de Rome avaient fait l'objet, de la part des Nazoréens, d'une activité prosélyte impor- tante et couronnée de succès; 7) Les Nazoréens ne sont pas à l'origine du Grand In- cendie (la logique interne confirme ici les apparences); 8) L'Église paulinienne pri- mitive était loyale à l'égard de Rome et rejetait les Christiani opposés à Rome: si le gouvernement central n'a pas persécuté l'Église avant 270, c'est sans doute parce que le Christianisme était considéré comme un contrepoids à l'activité prosélyte des Nazoréens (et d'autres, potentiellement) parmi les esclaves et les classes inférieures.

    Recovering Josephus: Mason’s History of the Jewish War and the Siege of Masada Gwyn Davies and Jodi Magness In a recent book, S. Mason, a highly-regarded Josephus specialist, presents an overview of the First Jewish Revolt against Rome.1 Mason argues that Josephus’ testimony is unreliable and incomplete, and therefore cannot form a basis for reconstructing events which unfolded in Judea and Rome two thousand years ago.2 Instead, according to Mason, any one of a number of scenarios not presented by Josephus could equally likely have occurred.3 One episode that Mason discusses at length is Josephus’ account of the siege and fall of Masada.4 In this paper, we examine the archaeological remains at Masada, and conclude — contra Mason — that they support Josephus’ description of the Roman assault over other possible scenarios. Mason’s book is not a critique of Josephus’ testimony as such, but rather the way in which that testimony has been interpreted and understood by modern scholars, as he seeks ‘to distinguish between the interpretation of whatever has survived… and our imagining of the lost past.’5 To achieve this, Mason sets out ‘to investigate crucial moments in the war and the evidence for them by looking first for the simplest, or most analogically complete, explanations.’6 In other words, according to Mason, we cannot know what really happened in the past, due to the nature of our sources, because (as he says regarding the First Revolt): ‘We have no one to rely on for this war.’7 Instead, Mason believes we should be open to considering various possibilities, even if they conflict with surviving literary accounts.8 In this paper, we test Mason’s post-modern literary approach to Josephus through one case study: the siege of Masada, focusing in particular on the assault ramp.

Dongbin Choi September 2013 Dissertation submitted as partial requirement for the degree of MRes in Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Nottingham Abstract Concerning the belief about continuation of the Davidic dynasty in the Second Temple Jewish literature, the present study seeKs to understand how the belief may have been understood in 1 Maccabees. Specifically, it asKs whether the Hasmoneans are legitimised as Kings in the booK, replacing the Davidic dynasty. Through examining relevant passages such as 2:57, 5:62, 14:25–49, and 14:41, it is argued that the author of 1 Maccabees does not present the Hasmoneans as legitimate kings.
