Ḵ̓A̱NGEX̱TOLA SEWN-ON-TOP: KWAK’WALA REVITALIZATION AND BEING INDIGENOUS by PATRICIA CHRISTINE ROSBOROUGH B.A., University of Victoria, 1993 M.A., Bastyr University, 1995 A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF EDUCATION in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (Educational Leadership and Policy) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) August 2012 © Patricia Christine Rosborough, 2012 ABSTRACT Kwak’wala, the language of the Kwakwa̱ka̱’wakw, like the languages of all Indigenous peoples of British Columbia, is considered endangered. Documentation and research on Kwak’wala began more than a century ago, and efforts to revitalize Kwak’wala have been under way for more than three decades. For Indigenous peoples in colonizing societies, language revitalization is a complex endeavour. Within the fields of language revitalization and Indigenous studies, the practices and policies of colonization have been identified as key factors in Indigenous language decline. This study deepens the understanding of the supports for and barriers to Kwak’wala revitalization. Emphasizing Indigenization as a key aspect of decolonization, the study explored the relationship between Kwak’wala learning and being Indigenous. The study was conducted through a Ḵ̓a̱ngex̱tola framework, an Indigenous methodology based on the metaphor of creating a button blanket, the ceremonial regalia of the Kwaka̱ka̱’wakw. The research has built understanding through the author’s experience as a Kwak’wala learner and the use of various approaches to language learning, including two years with the Master-Apprentice approach. The research employs the researcher’s journals and personal stories, as well as interviews with six individuals who are engaged in Kwak’wala revitalization. -

The site also lists a wide variety of links to Cree language and cultural resources. • Cree Cultural Institute http://creeculture.ca/ This site is an excellent destination for learning about the culture and language of Crees living in the James Bay and Hudson Bay regions of Quebec. Among the many features of this website are an archive of historical photographs, an online exhibition of Cree artifacts from the region, and translated traditional stories. • Centre for Race and Culture http://www.cfrac.com/ This organization based in Edmonton, AB organizes programs and projects to help minority, immigrant, and refugee communities. She works mainly with hardshell gourds grown in her garden located in the Okanagan Valley. Janine carves, pyro-engraves, paints, sculpts and shapes gourds into artistic creations. Walking Together: First Nations, Métis and Inuit Perspectives in Curriculum Healing Historical Trauma ABORIGINAL LANGUAGES: REVITALIZATION Excerpt from Peoples and Cultural Change Teacher Resource ABORIGINAL LANGUAGES: REVITALIZATION In Alberta, the major Aboriginal languages spoken are Blackfoot, two variants of Plains Cree (one sometimes known as Woodland Cree), Dene Suliné, Dene Tha’, Dunne-Za, Métis Cree, Michif, Nakoda, Saulteaux, and Tsuu T’ina. More than half of the sixty Aboriginal languages in Canada today are endangered. Ten Aboriginal languages have become extinct over the past century. With a growing general awareness of the importance of maintaining Aboriginal languages, an increasing number of specific programs and community efforts aimed at revitalization are underway. From 1996 to 2001, eight languages showed an increase in the number of speakers. According to Statistics Canada, more people can now carry on a conversation in Inuktitut, Dene, Montagnais-Naskapi, Attikamekw, Mi’kmaq, Dakota, and Oji-Cree. The Aboriginal Studies 10 text, Aboriginal Perspectives, also presents statistics for Aboriginal languages in Canada. A New Beginning The first Aboriginal language immersion program in Canada was established in 1980 by the Mohawk people of Kahnawake, Quebec. It was modelled after the French immersion programs elsewhere in the province, and it has since become a model for other Aboriginal communities in North America. Recent surveys of language use show an increase in the speaking of Mohawk, including mixed into English conversations and in private by young people. Overall, more people are now able to speak Mohawk, especially the younger generation who went through the immersion program. The middle generation, however, did not know the language and had not learned it. -

TABLED DOCUMENT 12-17(5) TABLED ON NOVEMBER 6, 2013 GOVERNMENT OF THE NORTHWEST TERRITORIES ANNUAL REPORT ON OFFICIAL LANGUAGES 2012-13 GOVERNMENT OF THE NORTHWEST TERRITORIES 2012-13 1 This year, the Aboriginal Official Languages Division hosted a photo contest in March 2013 as part of Aboriginal Languages Month. The contest was a way for residents to visually share the impact of their culture. A short story or description related to the photo, written in both English and an NWT Aboriginal language, was also required. Of the entries received, Hye Paulette was selected as the winner of ECE’s Aboriginal Languages Month Photo Contest with her fantastic photo story. Her excellent portrayal of the connection of youth and Elders through the expression of Dene language and culture demonstrates important northern values that must be preserved. In recognition of her winning submission, Hye received an Apple iPad with the newly released Dene Language Apps and the opportunity to have her photo highlighted in the 2012-2013 Annual Report on Official Languages. NIITIS’PO’SIIN (REVITALIZING & PRESERVING THE BLACKFOOT LANGUAGE PROGRAM) Summary/Abstract of Audioessay /Podcast A PROJECT SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER’S EDUCATION Submitted by: Delbert Mills April 2011 Delbert Mills 2011 NIITIS’POWAHSIIN (Revitalizing & Preservation of the Blackfoot Language) INTRODUCTION: The audioessay NIITIS’POWAHSIIN (Revitalizing & Preservation of the Blackfoot Language) has been developed to explore efforts that have been and continue to be made to preserve the Blackfoot language on the Blood Indian Reserve. The research methodology used to produce the audio essay stresses the use of cooperative inquiry and respects the voices of the Elders and other key participants from the Blood community. Part of the strategy of revitalizing and preserving the Blackfoot language is interviewing and recording Elders, starting from their names and how they acquired their names. In the Blackfoot culture the first teaching in learning how to speak the Blackfoot language is your name. Your name identifies you and which clan you belong to. My first interview in this project has to do with the importance of “name-giving” in the Blackfoot culture. In all I interviewed six (6) tribal members from the Blackfoot/Kainai First Nations, two of these interviewee’s were Elders, two Blackfoot/Kainai certified Blackfoot language teachers, one masters degree social worker and finally a former broadcaster with the local Blackfoot Radio Program. I feel these interviews are essential to get a wider spectrum of comments on how the Blackfoot/Kainai First Nations have attempted to preserve and revitalize their language, and their informed insights on how to move forward. -
