You were raised in Baltimore, Maryland. What did you bring to What was the first thing you photographed when you arrived to California’s table? California in 1999? I brought a plastic toy camera, a humidor filled with some cigars, 6 The "Welcome to California" sign. I pulled over right after the border bungee cords, an Alpine car stereo, and a Biz Markie CD. It was all inspectors check incoming vehicles carrying fruit and vegetables. I stolen the first week I moved to the Bay Area along with shot the sign with a Polaroid Land camera. Then I got distracted in some other stuff. I guess it was a toll I had to pay, but nobody told me Joshua Tree and stayed there an extra day to shoot and drink up about it before I got here. They let me keep my Baltimore accent and the California desert. I also hit the Dinosaurs at Cabazon with the blue collar work ethic. I'll never shake those things. In toy camera. reality I came with a desire to just find my own way, but now I feel the ability to contribute. -

Part-Time Instructor Posting #FAPT01-21 Dakelh (Carrier) Language Instructor First Nations Studies Faculty of Indigenous Studies, Social Sciences and Humanities The University of Northern British Columbia invites applications for an instructor in the Department of First Nations Studies to teach a single introductory Dakelh (Carrier) Language Course during the 2021 Spring Semester. This course will be taught online and is scheduled to run from 31 May 2021 to 18 June 2021 from 9:00 am to 11:50 am with an exam to be scheduled between 21-25 June 2021. Interested applicants must be willing to teach online, have experience teaching in a post-secondary and/or adult education setting, and possess a working knowledge of Dakelh. Sustaining Indigenous Languages Looking Back, Looking Forward Inge Genee and Conor Snoek In the past decade or so, the endangerment of many of the world’s Indigenous and other minority languages has begun to percolate into the public consciousness, becoming part of the wider debate about cultural, environmental, and economic sustainability. The United Nations declaration of 2019 as the International Year of Indigenous Languages (en.iyil2019.org) can be considered emblematic of the rise in global awareness of the threat of language extinction. Popular press articles about language endangerment are becoming more common, and local papers often comment on initiatives to revitalize or maintain Indigenous languages of a specific group or territory. In addition, social media groups promote and support individual language communities and provide a means of connecting speakers living outside their communities of origin. It is becoming clearer all the time that language maintenance has many benefits in addition to the preservation of unique ways of seeing the world, including mental and physical health benefits (Biddle and Swee 2012; Hallett et al. 2007; Whalen et al. 2016), community benefits (Romero-Little et al. 2011) and educational benefits (Huffmann 2018; Luning and Yamaguchi 2010; Reyhner 2017). Indigenous language communities and linguists working in Indigenous language documentation and related fields have been aware of the threat to In- digenous languages for several decades. Passionate writings calling the linguistic community to action emerged as early as the 1990s (Crawford 1998; Grenoble and Whaley 1998; Hinton 1997; Krauss 1992), but, like the climate scientists who long warned of a looming crisis, linguists and language activists have struggled to be heard. -

Our first election under our new set of by-laws has been successfully conducted and the officers have taken their places. As outlined, the election was for three members to compose the Board of Trustees. All other offices have become appointive. In addition, the position of Vice-President has been eliminated. All officers will serve for a two-year term. In 2010 only two positions on the Board will be open: the incumbent President will remain as carry over but will relinquish his title, and the new Board will proceed to choose one among them once more for President for 2010-12. That's the “game plan,” so to speak. On August 4, Secretary-Treasurer Tom Parson delivered to the President the results of the election: Number of ballots received = 21 Louise Lincoln 1 Danny L. McDaniel 8 Guy Miller 18: Elected Stan Oliner 18: Elected Jack Swenson 17: Elected Immediately upon receipt of the report, I called upon the newly elected members to give to the Secretary-Treasurer their choices for the new President to serve for the 2-year term 2008-2010. Their choice was that I should be that person. And so, I begin another stint at the end of which I will have had a ten-year try plus an earlier term (1994-95). Hopefully, by 2010 all of you will have had enough of me and, mercifully, put me out to pasture! Salish reduplication signals such typologically common categories as "distributive/plural," "repetitive/continuative," and "diminutive," the cross-linguistically marked but typically Salish notion of "out-of-control" or more restricted categories in particular Salish languages. In addition to these functions, reduplication also plays a role in numeral systems of the Salish languages. The basic forms of several numerals appear to be reduplicated throughout the Salish family. In addition, correspondences among the various Interior Salish languages suggest the association of certain reduplicative patterns with particular "counting forms" referring to specific nominal categories. Summary. This document requests 39 additional characters to be added to the UCS and contains the proposal summary form. 1. Syllabics hyphen (U+1400). Many Aboriginal Canadian languages use the character U+1428 CANADIAN SYLLABICS FINAL SHORT HORIZONTAL STROKE, which looks like the Latin script hyphen. Algonquian languages like western dialects of Cree, Oji-Cree, western and northern dialects of Ojibway employ this character to represent /tʃ/, /c/, or /j/, as in Plains Cree ᐊᓄᐦᐨ /anohc/ ‘today’. In Athabaskan languages, like Chipewyan, the sound is /d/ or an alveolar onset, as in Sayisi Dene ᐨᕦᐣᐨᕤ /t’ąt’ú/ ‘how’. To avoid ambiguity between this character and a line-breaking hyphen, a SYLLABICS HYPHEN was developed which resembles an equals sign. Depending on the typeface, the width of the syllabics hyphen can range from a short ᐀ to a much longer ᐀. This hyphen is line-breaking punctuation, and should not be confused with the Blackfoot syllable internal-w final proposed for U+167F. See Figures 1 and 2. 2. DHW- additions for Woods Cree (U+1677..U+167D). ᙷᙸᙹᙺᙻᙼᙽ/ðwē/ /ðwi/ /ðwī/ /ðwo/ /ðwō/ /ðwa/ /ðwā/. The basic syllable structure in Cree is (C)(w)V(C)(C).
