    Modern Yokai How Japan embraced their monsters. What are Yokai? The kanji used for Yokai doesn’t have a simple/exact English translation. Yokai are a class of supernatural entities and spirits in Japanese folklore. They range from dangerous and aggressive to helpful and fortuitous. Some are as strong as gods, others are spirits of nature, and others are just lil’guys…who want to give you tofu on a dark road at night. Forewarning: I am NOT a yokai expert. I have tried to stay as close to the official historical information on these guys as possible, but some less accurate things may pop up. Please don’t come at me. I’m very weak and insecure. ALSO there are some adult themes throughout. Kitsune (lit. fox/ fox spirit) Two major variations. *Zenko Holy foxes are servants of the Shinto deity Inari, shrines decorated with statues and images of foxes. These holy foxes act as messengers of the gods and mediums between the celestial and human worlds, protect humans or places, provide good luck, and ward evil spirits away. We are not talking about those ones. More common are the *Yako wild foxes which delight in mischief, pranks, or evil, wild foxes trick or even possess humans, and make them behave strangely. Kitsune are often associated with fire, “kitsunebi” or Fox-fire, similar in a way to “wil-o-wisps”, created by kitsune breathing fire into lanternlight orbs to light paths for other yokai or to trick humans. Kitsune are extremely intelligent and powerful shape-shifters. They frequently harass humans by transforming into fearsome monsters *giants, trains, oni etc.

Keller Kimbrough Tourists in Paradise Writing the Pure Land in Medieval Japanese Fiction Late-medieval Japanese fiction contains numerous accounts of lay and monastic travelers to the Pure Land and other extra-human realms. In many cases, the “tourists” are granted guided tours, after which they are returned to the mun- dane world in order to tell of their unusual experiences. This article explores several of these stories from around the sixteenth century, including, most prominently, Fuji no hitoana sōshi, Tengu no dairi, and a section of Seiganji engi. I discuss the plots and conventions of these and other narratives, most of which appear to be based upon earlier oral tales employed in preaching and fund-raising, in order to illuminate their implications for our understanding of Pure Land-oriented Buddhism in late-medieval Japan. Zeh, Ph.D., Dean, Graduate School May, 2017 i Abstract Shinto is a native Japanese religion with a history that goes back thousands of years. Because of its close ties to Japanese culture, and Shinto’s strong emphasis on place in its practice, it does not seem to be the kind of religion that would migrate to other areas of the world and convert new practitioners. However, not only are there examples of Shinto being practiced outside of Japan, the people doing the practice are not always of Japanese heritage. The Tsubaki Grand Shrine of America is one of the only fully functional Shinto shrines in the United States and is run by the first non-Japanese Shinto priest. This thesis looks at the community of practice that surrounds this American shrine and examines how membership is negotiated through action. There are three main practices that form the larger community: language use, rituals, and Aikido. Through participation in these activities members engage with an American Shinto community of practice.

Blaeser My dissertation is a creative translation from Japanese into English of the poetry of Yosa Buson, an 18th century (1716 – 1783) poet. Buson is considered to be one of the most important of the Edo Era poets and is still influential in modern Japanese literature. By taking account of Japanese culture, identity and aesthetics the dissertation project bridges the gap between American and Japanese poetics, while at the same time revealing the complexity of thought in Buson's poetry and bringing the target audience closer to the text of a powerful and mov- ing writer.

    Childbearing in Japanese Society: Traditional Beliefs and Contemporary Practices by Gunnella Thorgeirsdottir A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Sheffield Faculty of Social Sciences School of East Asian Studies August 2014 ii iii iv Abstract In recent years there has been an oft-held assumption as to the decline of traditions as well as folk belief amidst the technological modern age. The current thesis seeks to bring to light the various rituals, traditions and beliefs surrounding pregnancy in Japanese society, arguing that, although changed, they are still very much alive and a large part of the pregnancy experience. Current perception and ideas were gathered through a series of in depth interviews with 31 Japanese females of varying ages and socio-cultural backgrounds. These current perceptions were then compared to and contrasted with historical data of a folkloristic nature, seeking to highlight developments and seek out continuities. This was done within the theoretical framework of the liminal nature of that which is betwixt and between as set forth by Victor Turner, as well as theories set forth by Mary Douglas and her ideas of the polluting element of the liminal. It quickly became obvious that the beliefs were still strong having though developed from a person-to- person communication and into a set of knowledge aquired by the mother largely from books, magazines and or offline. v vi Acknowledgements This thesis would never have been written had it not been for the endless assistance, patience and good will of a good number of people.
