Selection of Favorite Reusable Launch Vehicle Concepts by using the Method of Pairwise Comparison Robert A. The vehicle system is divided into design features. Every design feature can have alternative characteristics. All combinations of design features and characteristics are compared pairwise with each other with respect to relative importance for a feasible vehicle concept as seen from technical, economic, and political aspects. This valuation process leads to a ranked list of design features for suborbital and orbital applications. The result is a theoretical optimized suborbital and orbital vehicle each. The method of pairwise comparison allows to determine not only ranking but also assessing the relative weight of each feature compared to others. Keywords: Pairwise Comparison, Reusable Launch Vehicle, Space Tourism Introduction The potential for an introduction of reusable launch vehicles is derived from an expected increasing demand for transportation of passengers in the decades to come. The assumed future satellite market does not justify to operate reusable launch vehicles only for satellites due to a low launch rate. Finding feasible vehicle concepts, which satisfy operator’s, passenger’s, and public’s needs, will be a challenging task. Since it is not possible to satisfy all space tourism markets by one vehicle, different vehicles that are capable to serve one particular segment (suborbital or orbital) are needed. -

Thomas’17 Department of Biology, Hampden-Sydney College, Hampden-Sydney, VA 23943 The exploration of Mars was once left to the imagination. However, in recent years, the topic of exploring Mars has become more realistic and increasingly popular in news articles and scientific communities. Technology developed in the previous half-century have already allowed humans to send rovers to Mars in order to retrieve some basic data about the planet. Current technological advancements are resulting in reusable rockets that could one day travel between Earth and Mars. Exploration and colonization of Mars are important for the development of research on the planet and the search for life. Current data is limited, but shows that the conditions on Mars could have supported life in the past. To further our knowledge of the red planet, The atmosphere surrounding Earth is nearly organizations like NASA and companies like SpaceX one-hundred times denser than that of Mars and its are developing plans to colonize Mars. Many composition is crucial to life. According to NASA, the obstacles stand in the way before humans can reach Earth’s atmosphere is comprised of 78% Nitrogen, and colonize the red planet. However, Mars is the 21% Oxygen, and 1% Other. On Mars, the sparse best option for interplanetary colonization and the atmosphere is comprised of nearly 96% Carbon most feasible way to research current and future life Dioxide, less than 2% Argon, less than 2% Nitrogen, on a planet other than Earth. -

Final Environmental Assessment for the Launch and Reentry of SpaceShipTwo Reusable Suborbital Rockets at the Mojave Air and Space Port May 2012 HQ-121575 DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION Federal Aviation Administration Office of Commercial Space Transportation; Finding of No Significant Impact AGENCY: Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ACTION: Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) SUMMARY: The FAA Office of Commercial Space Transportation (AST) prepared a Final Environmental Assessment (EA) in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, as amended (NEPA; 42 United States Code 4321 et seq.), Council on Environmental Quality NEPA implementing regulations (40 Code of Federal Regulations parts 1500 to 1508), and FAA Order 1050.1E, Change 1, Environmental Impacts: Policies and Procedures, to evaluate the potential environmental impacts of issuing experimental permits and/or launch licenses to operate SpaceShipTwo reusable suborbital rockets and WhiteKnightTwo carrier aircraft at the Mojave Air and Space Port in Mojave, California. After reviewing and analyzing currently available data and information on existing conditions and the potential impacts of the Proposed Action, the FAA has determined that issuing experimental permits and/or launch licenses to operate SpaceShipTwo and WhiteKnightTwo at the Mojave Air and Space Port would not significantly impact the quality of the human environment. Therefore, preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement is not required, and the FAA is issuing this FONSI. The FAA made this determination in accordance with all applicable environmental laws. By establishing government-industry partnerships, the Commercial Orbital Transportation Services (COTS) program marked a change from the traditional way NASA had worked. Inset photos, right: The COTS program supported two U.S. companies in their efforts to design and build transportation systems to carry cargo to low-Earth orbit. (Top photo—Credit: SpaceX) SpaceX launched its Falcon 9 rocket on May 22, 2012, from Cape Canaveral, Florida. (Second photo) Three days later, the company successfully completed the mission that sent its Dragon spacecraft to the Station. (Third photo—Credit: NASA/Bill Ingalls) Orbital Sciences Corp. sent its Antares rocket on its test flight on April 21, 2013, from a new launchpad on Virginia’s eastern shore. Later that year, the second Antares lifted off with Orbital’s cargo capsule, (Fourth photo) the Cygnus, that berthed with the ISS on September 29, 2013. Both companies successfully proved the capability to deliver cargo to the International Space Station by U.S. commercial companies and began a new era of spaceflight. June 2021 Virgin Galactic Holdings, Inc. (SPCE) Putting the Zero in Zero-G We are short shares of Virgin Galactic Holdings, Inc., often described as the only publicly traded space-tourism company. After going public in October 2019 by way of a merger with a “blank check” company, Virgin Galactic has seen its share price and trading volume soar. It’s become a retail darling, with day traders captivated by images of billionaires donning space suits, blasting off from launchpads, and looking down on the blue marble of Earth. But Virgin Galactic’s $250,000+ commercial “spaceflights” – if they ever actually happen, after some 17 years of delays and disasters – will offer only the palest imitations of these experiences. In lieu of pressurized space suits with helmets – unnecessary since so little time will be spent in the upper atmosphere – the company commissioned Under Armour to provide “high-tech pajamas.” In lieu of vertical takeoff, Virgin’s “spaceship” must cling to the underside of a specialized airplane for the first 45,000 feet up, because its rocket motor is too weak to push through the lower atmosphere on its own. In lieu of the blue-marble vista and life in zero-g, Virgin’s so-called astronauts will at best be able to catch a glimpse of the curvature of Earth and a few minutes of weightlessness before plunging back to ground. This isn’t “tourism,” let alone Virgin’s more grandiose term, “exploration”; it’s closer to a souped- up roller coaster, like the “Drop of Doom” ride at Six Flags. -
