The mission of Camp Towhee is to increase the social competence and self esteem of children and adolescents with learning disabilities, and to assist them in learning new skills in a safe and accepting environment. These objectives are achieved through the campers’ participation in unique and powerful outdoor learning experiences and activities with other campers.

Camp Kodiak T: (705) 389-1910 E: [email protected] http://www.campkodiak.com/

Kodiak campers range in age from 6-18 and include children & teens with and without learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder & Asperger Syndrome. They come from Canada, the U.S.A. and around the world.

All camp activities are planned with a view to teaching skills, building confidence and improving self-esteem. They achieve this by carefully structuring all of their activities to ensure success. Teaching is done by skilled instructors who break tasks down into manageable chunks and present them in a logical sequence. In this way we can be sure that our campers will be successful. They acknowledge every accomplishment, and never miss the opportunity to provide positive feedback and recognition.

The athletic instructors de-emphasize competition, stress co-operation and sportsmanship and model appropriate attitudes and behavior.

Staff members are trained to look beneath the surface of the children and youth in their care – to see potential, fears, and dreams. They believe in each camper’s unique ability to grow, to learn, to make new friends, and to discover their best selves. Youthdale | Treatment Residences – Summer Coordinator T: (416) 368-4896, ext. 2694 http://youthdale.ca/

Youth dale’s residences offer integrated services in a practical day-to-day living environment. Youth dale operates four treatment residences in Toronto, one in Aurora, and another near Magnetawan. Each home accommodates eight to nine children and is staffed by mental health professionals assisted by a consulting psychiatrist. The treatment residences emphasize structure, and incorporate the day-to-day routines families normally have in their homes, such as wake-up, mealtime, and study times. This consistency and predictability is augmented by daily group therapy meetings, in which children and staff discuss their difficulties and better ways of working together. While in residence, children attend regular community schools or special classes through Youth dale’s day treatment program and, in July and August, attend our summer camp. Youth dale recognizes that the decision to admit a child to residential treatment is stressful for children and their families. A Youth dale family worker will help prepare everyone and will provide ongoing family support and therapy. Youth dale strives to adapt its services to a child’s religion, heritage, and cultural identity.

Kerry’s Place – Autism Services T: 905-841-6611 www.kerrysplace.com

Autism is a life-long disability from which there is no known cure. There is much that we can do, however, to ensure that people with autism expand their horizons of independence and achievement. Provided with the necessary supports and the development of communication and life skills and integration into the community, we have learned that people with autism have talents, skills and a desire to contribute that can be utilized in the workplace, school and in the community.

The residential programs operated by Kerry’s Place Autism Services offer safe and practical living arrangements within various communities in Southern Ontario. Communication and life skills are taught in all settings, at school, in the work place and in social and recreational settings. Our group homes are single family dwellings which usually accommodate four residents per home. Kerry’s Place also provides supported independent living arrangements and home-share settings.

The Kerry’s Place Community Outreach services are more specific to the needs of the respective communities that they serve. Depending upon the Ministry mandate for the specific region, the community outreach program may serve both children and adults or only children and adolescents until the age of 18 years. Overall, the Kerry’s Place Community Outreach programs provide support and consultation to individuals with autism and their families. This service may take the form of behaviour management, family resource days, workshops and parent counseling.

Respite support is provided to families in need through community outreach. These arrangements can be offered in residence or in the community.
