    In recent years, Slovenia and Slovenian tourism have made breakthroughs in the development and promotion of the country, particularly as a five-star boutique destination committed to sustainability. As our country received distinguished awards and was ranked among the world’s top countries, this has led to the increased attention of the world public, which viewed Slovenia as a leading country in many areas, particularly in sustainable tourism. The recognitions and awards received by the Slovenian Tourist Board in recent years have also significantly contributed to the increased recognisability and the growing reputation of Slovenia as an excellent tourist destination. We are also proud of the international awards and recognitions received by Slovenia’s tourist destinations and cities. Some of the main ones are listed below. 2020: • Among the recipients of the "Destination of Sustainable Cultural Tourism" awards organized by the European Cultural Tourism Network (ECTN) are the tourist product Vineyard Retreats with first place in the category of wine tourism and the Idrija Mercury Mine Hg Smelting Plant with second place in the industrial heritage tourism category. • As part of the Weekend Premium Awards 2020, the Italian magazine Weekend Premium awarded Slovenia an award in the Green in Europe category for the development and promotion of sustainable tourism. • The promotional film of the project idea "Walk of Peace" implemented by the Foundation of the Walk of Peace in Soča region in cooperation with partners was chosen as the best EU Interreg project of the year among 150 applicants. • At the virtual event Global Green Destinations Days 2020, nine Slovenian destinations were included in the list of the 100 most sustainable destinations (Sustainable Destinations Top 100 list): namely Bled, Brda, Soča Valley, Kočevsko, Ljubljana, Logar Valley - Solčava, Miren Kras, Podčetrtek and Rogaška Slatina.

Mill and sawmill Pobrežje near Adlešiči Location in space and time Pobrežje is a village in the southeast of Slovenia in Bela Krajina (White Carniola). It is a karst landscape characterized by shallow karst, as evidenced by the surroundings along the river Kolpa with varied terrain, numerous sinkholes and less fertile soil, where there is a lot of clay that does not retain moisture and is less fertile soil limestone sedimentary base. The village stands along the river Kolpa and doesn’t show its importance and grandeur of the times from the 16th century onwards, when a mighty medieval fortress was built here, already described by Janez Vajkard Valvasor. The coast boasted a medieval fortress built between 1547 and 1558. The castle also had a castle mill and later a sawmill, which is also depicted in Valvasor's depiction. They did not witness major Turkish invasions at this place. The fort had walls with a square and a church, but it never developed into a larger market core in its history. Pobrežje Castle was built by Ivan Lenkovič during his settlement in Carniola, He was the leader of the Vojna Krajina, which had the task of defending against the Turk army. Mills on the River Kolpa The Kolpa River is the border river with Croatia and almost the southernmost point of Bela krajina. Its tributaries were once a very important source of energy, especially in the upper reaches, as in the period from around 1880 to 1980 within the area of the Kolpa Landscape Park the 48 mills operated in the Bela Krajina part of the Kolpa, more than half of them on the Slovenian coast.16 mills are still visible or standing.

Author’s note (September 2016) The article about institutional impact on traditional Slovenian singing was formed as an analysis of the situation around the year 2006. Basic tendencies of evaluating and selecting performing singers (and instrumentalists) are still current, although performance and research activities concerning traditional music are subject to permanent transformation. Today criteria for evaluating performers in traditional singing are less rigid than they were in 2006 because of new reflections the number of duets and the increase in young performers; also the criteria are more open for stylistic manners which are not only histori- cally based. The revitalization of traditional music proceeds in various directions, and this article concentrates on gatherings of traditional singers and musicians (hereinafter called “gatherings”); the main purpose of such gatherings is to represent traditional music as a conscious and system- atic concept. Representational and conservational directives have been part of gatherings since the beginning (the first gathering was organ- ized in Ribnica, Lower Carniola in 1973) and simultaneously such gath- erings have become part of the stream of other revitalizations of traditional music; at the same time, with their conscious directing of content and aesthetic characteristics of traditional music, they repre- sent its institutionalization beginning.

  • Religious Pluralisation in Slovenia
    Aleš ČRNIČ, Mirt KOMEL, Marjan SMRKE, Ksenija ŠABEC, Tina VOVK* RELIGIOUS PLURALISATION IN SLOVENIA Abstract. The article analyses the dynamics of religious plu- ralisation in Slovenia. Historical developments in various states have kept Slovenians almost exclusively within the Roman-Catholic Church, except for a short Reformation period. The socialist after-war secularisation of society has in many respects undermined the Catholic monopoly, but it failed to create an open religious market. In the transi- tional period the statistics of Catholics continued to drop, and at the same time ever more new religious movements emerged. These are mostly very small and at the time being do not show the potential for substantial growth. The arti- cle analyses in detail religious pluralisation in the regions of Ljubljana and Nova Gorica. Keywords: religious pluralisation, Catholic Church, reli- gious market, secularisation 205 From religious monopoly to pluralisation – historical contexts The polytheistic forefathers of today’s Slovenians settled in the hills and valleys between the north-eastern shores of the Adriatic and south-eastern fringes of the Alps during the 6th and 7th centuries CE. The proximity of the Salzburg Archbishopric and Aquileia Patriarchate ensured that these settlers soon became the target of missionaries who were not only in pursuit of reli- gious conversion but also, on behalf of their feudal rulers, strove to achieve political subjugation. Following the capture of Slav nobles, who were held as hostages, the loosely aligned and self-determining tribal state of Carantania bowed to the pressure; however, adherents to the tradition that worshiped personifications of nature – and in particular such deities as Veles, Mokoš and Perun – were to take up arms against the new order on at least two occasions.
