Pagel In memory of Katerina Koneva

The la5t copy of SPLASH contained the name5 of the SMILE competition prize winner5, Katerina Koneva from Holland Park School wa5 one of them. She wa5 found murdered in her flat in Hammer5mith on 22nd May 1997. Katerina loved math5 - I believe it wa5 her favourite 5ubject. She 5tood out in the c/a55 and in the lower 5chool; 5he had more math5 merit5 than any other pupil and her work de5erved them. SMILE allowed her to work at a rapid pace and to extend her5elf with new idea5 - 5he loved it. She wa5 quick to learn and her work a delight to mark. I could give her the full range of material a5 any equipment would be well taken care of at home and bought back the next day. Now other pupi/5 when 5et Pentagon Triangle5 or Soma 5olid5 or 50 many other card5 5ay "Katerina did thi5". She marked her5elf out from the beginning of the year by getting the general rule for "Hand5hake5" before mo5t of the other5 knew what wa5 going on. She recently did 0740 without any help from me.

Katerina had everything in front of her, a love for learning and the determination to 5ucceed - I don't under5tand why it wa5 all taken away. I am glad to have known her and to have taught her. I want to pay tribute to her through SMILE a5 it gave her such plea5ure and a sense of achievement.

Numbers in your mind R.I.P. Dear Splash In the June SPLASH, I noticed that the mental mathematics activities which I published through the Learning Resources Branch (LRB), have been deleted from the network. This is not surprising now that they are out of print, not to mention having been transferred between several publishers after the ILEA was broken up seven years ago. However, I see it in a more positive light than a deletion. After all, it always seemed a contradicition in terms that I was seconded to devise learning MATERIALS for MENTAL mathematics. Shouldn't we be doing it in our heads? What on earth have materials got to do with making numbers or geometry in your mind? The positive side of the deletion is that Mental Mathematics is firmly embedded into every scheme of work, specifically mentioned in the National Curriculum, part of the National Numeracy Project and certainly in the plans of primary and secondary teachers. Most teachers also have moved on from Mental Arithmetic to Mental Mathematics. All this must be regarded as progress. There is no more need for my 'Numbers in your Mind' activities which I always regarded as 'starters'. The same is true perhaps of SMILE booklet 2112 where the geometrical imaginings were published. Now SMILE and other teachers have started, they and their pupils will have their own ideas on how visualise, calculate and see mathematics in their heads. We still could do more to give young people thinking time but we should also be celebrating the progress we have made since 1982 when the Cockcroft Report put mental mathematics on the teaching map. WendyTroy University of Greenwich Page6 National Curriculum Planning -A Farewell

At the last meeting of National Curriculum Planning it was decided that: + it was increasingly hard for teachers to attend the group regularly + the original focus of the group was no longer a top priority for many schools It was thus decided that the regular National Curriculum Planning group would be replaced with a series of "Raising achievement focus days". These will still be development days, but could be attended on a one-off basis, according to the needs and priorities of the teachers and schools attending. There will be two Raising Achievement focus days each term. Raising Achievement focus days for the Autumn term will be: Performance Indicators - Wednesday November 5th - see below. Numeracy- Wednesday November 12th- see page 8. Please contact the SMILE Centre if you have any other requests or suggestions for focuses. Raising Achievement Days

Numeracy Day Wednesday 12th November D Numeracy

The focus of this group depends upon the interests/needs of the teachers attending, but it is hoped to continue with the work started at the previous meetings. At the last meeting work continued on looking at existing SMILE materials that might be useful for tutors to use during tutorial time. Particularly useful were Thinking and listening, Bingo, Guessing, Making 55, To make 1000, Boxes and Four boxes from SMILE 2324 Reckonings. One group looked at developing activities for a 'Numeracy at Home' Question and Answer Pack for parents. Other areas worked upon were: + A whole school approach to algorithms. + Possible starting points for whole school INSET on numeracy. + Key areas for developing a numeracy policy. The next Numeracy Day meeting will be on Wednesday 12th November from 9.30 -4.00 at the SMILE Centre. This is open to any interested teacher, please use the above application form.

The writing of collaborative activities will continue within the SMILE Writing group. Page13 Using the Internet in mathematics

On July 4th 1997, SMILE held 'Using the Internet in mathematics' course at Graveney School in direct response to Mike Quigley's successful conference workshop. The course used the skills of Mike Quigley, Mike Smith and Neala Akharware, teachers from the Maths, IT and Humanities departments at Graveney school and by the end of the day all those participating had managed to set up their own web page. Part of the day was also spent looking at some of the interesting maths sites that exist.

Moston Brook School's site: http://www.users.globalnet.eo.uk/-mbsch has pages created by students, see Mathematical Dictionary, describing things they have learnt in their SMILE mathematics lesson. One student, Paul Corrigan has created a link to a site which has a brilliant proof of Pythagoras. http://www.maths.ubc.ca/-morey/java/pyth/

The potential of using the Internet to enhance the learning of mathematics is great so another day has been set aside to run this course again at Graveney School on wednesday 1Oth December. If your school would like to host a course on 'Using the Internet in mathematics' in your area please contact the SMILE Centre.

Effective IEP's in mathematics

One of the items on the next meeting of the Off -site users development group on Friday 17th October is writing Effective IEP's in mathematics. If anyone has started developing these within the maths/learning support departments, could you send them to the group?

As part of the SMILE 25 celebrations, a hotel in Hove has been booked for this terms writing weekend. Date Friday 14th- Sunday 16th November As usual the weekend is open to any teacher to attend. Writing weekends provide a stimulating environment in which to develop the materials you want for your classroom. The last numeracy writing weekend was particularly successful and this may be a continued focus for some, but other focuses will depend on the interests and needs of those attending. There is no charge for coming to a writing weekend. If you would like to attend, please complete the application form below and return it to the SMILE Centre by Friday 17th October.

I thought I'd share my latest enthusiasm, although I suspect many of you have known all about this for ages. For years I have been setting 1557 - Spirals - to encourage accurate drawing and measurement. Sometimes, but not always, I have encouraged students to go on to -!-centimetre measurement. However, I have not really been excited by the card or had any insight into where it could lead. My view of this task has now been changed for ever, having used it as the basis of a "spur of the moment, lesson with year 7. Having coped with the inevitable "I haven't got a ruler", I started very slowly and carefully on the blackboard, using a square, doing each of the initial stages separately and making sure everyone had got the hang of it - also emphasising that the first attempt was a rough copy. We then moved on to the 4 triangles and this was my first enlightenment - one of the students had changed the rotation, so that instead of getting what I call the twisted ribbon effect, he had got a fan effect. A nice lesson, all things considered. The real excitement though came the next day and is still coming in three weeks later. One student brought in a piece of work based on this plan:

Page 16 It was very carefully drawn and stunning. When I showed the class I received the ultimate accolade - total silence, followed by a long sigh. Another student brought in a piece of work which made me go to the board to work out a coding system so that I could work out what she had done. Some students simply produced beautifully accurate, simple spirals. One student persevered to produce something approaching accurate - he was delighted. After the first two pieces of excitement more work flowed in, making me paint the noticeboard and arrange for protective covering for it. I then got in a contribution from a parent and this had led to a parents' competition (the deadline has had to be extended, parents aren't very good at doing their homework!) The final icing was when a year 9 boy, who has done almost no work took the activity into another dimension (literally). He did a pattern and is doing another which is based on overlaid opaque shapes. The effect is attractive, artistic and slightly unsettling. In summary, the activity worked extremely well with a mixed ability class; it allowed students first hand experience of how a Maths teacher sets about analysing something they don't initially understand and it gave the students a chance to teach an old dog new tricks.

PS This activity really reinforces the need for us to get back to using 2H pencils.

Page17 Conference feedback

First SMILE Conference I really enjoyed my first SMILE conference, mostly for the times between sessions and in the bar (tal Icing about maths teaching). Working alongside Charlotte, who I didn't know, in both morning workshops of John Stewart and Helen Holtam, was wonderful. We worked and solved problems together, getting further, quicker than we would have done by ourselves. This is just as I hope my pupils do. Jo Boaler's talk showed there is justification for my feeling about setted class teaching. I was reminded throughout the conference of why I get excit~d about teaching maths and how much fun it can be. I realise now, in July, rhat I haven't kept my enthusiasm for long enough. We need to rake more time to remember why we do mixed ability SMILE teaching and try not to lose sight of the important things. John Stewart is a teacher I had heard about before I even went to the conference. Shamha, my head of department recommended his workshop and it lived up to my expectations. As maths teachers we need to enjoy exploring maths at our own level and this is what he provided. Andolie Margurite- Mulberry School

Page21 An A-mazeing primary day

A small but extremely focused group met to investigate setting up a day for primary aged pupils to work together on the topic of codes. Initially I outlined a similar activity we had run at Headington School where teams of four year 5 and 6 pupils, each from one of our 15 primary feeder schools, had visited us for a day to work on the topic of mazes. This amazing day involved the pupils in using Logo, probability, tessellation as well as a chance to use the SMILE materials based on designing and solving a variety of 2 dimensional mazes. Here is a list of the ideas and materials we came up with which we believe would make useful stimulus material if you wanted to set a up a similar type of day, or just set up a project for use in your own school with a class or year group. Contact Nic Johnson via the SMILE Centre or at Headington on 01787 460470 for any other help on this project. What follows is a list of some of the ideas for resources on codes: 1733, 1758, 0808,0241, 0242, 1309, 1689, mappings and operations in general. Matrices to code messages: 0596, 0608, 0718. By popular demand next year's SMILE Conference will again be held at the Royal Agricultural College during the weekend 27th - 29th March.

Page22 A puzzle for the teacher

This puzzle was sent in by Mike Quigley Graveney School.

Using geometric software such as Cabri can be useful for setting your own problems, or getting students more involved in solving and setting their own. The triangle above is isosceles - and you don't need A level maths or 18 point circles to find x.

Solution to March's puzzle The entire solution to March's puzzle has not been printed due to lack of space. A number of solutions were sent in which used trigonometry to arrive at an equation, a solution to which could be approximated either using graphs or spreadsheets. The "answer" is 0.808 -to 3dp

If you would like to see the full solution please contact the SMILE Centre.
