She wa5 found murdered in her flat in Hammer5mith on 22nd May 1997. Katerina loved math5 - I believe it wa5 her favourite 5ubject. She 5tood out in the c/a55 and in the lower 5chool; 5he had more math5 merit5 than any other pupil and her work de5erved them. SMILE allowed her to work at a rapid pace and to extend her5elf with new idea5 - 5he loved it. She wa5 quick to learn and her work a delight to mark. I could give her the full range of material a5 any equipment would be well taken care of at home and bought back the next day. Now other pupi/5 when 5et Pentagon Triangle5 or Soma 5olid5 or 50 many other card5 5ay "Katerina did thi5". She marked her5elf out from the beginning of the year by getting the general rule for "Hand5hake5" before mo5t of the other5 knew what wa5 going on. She recently did 0740 without any help from me. Katerina had everything in front of her, a love for learning and the determination to 5ucceed - I don't under5tand why it wa5 all taken away. I am glad to have known her and to have taught her. I want to pay tribute to her through SMILE a5 it gave her such plea5ure and a sense of achievement. Su5an Steward Holland Park School Page2 Goodbye Helen ... Becoming part of a SMILE curriculum development group • entitles your school to a discount of 10% on SMILE materials, • enables you to develop your writing skills • allows your mathematics department to participate in deciding which new activities should go on the SMILE Network If you would like to anend either of these curriculum development groups please return the form from the last edition of Splash to the SMILE Centre as soon as possible. Page4 Network Changes Suggested changes for the September 1998 Network As mentioned in June's Splash, National Curriculum Planning felt that the unlevelled flow was under used, and that many activities within it would be more widely used if they were referenced within the main body of the Network. Numbers in your mind R.I.P. Dear Splash In the June SPLASH, I noticed that the mental mathematics activities which I published through the Learning Resources Branch (LRB), have been deleted from the network.
