Bradshaw, Advisor The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the dominant ideologies and hegemonic social constructs the television series Friends communicates in regard to friendship practices, gender roles, racial representations, and social class in order to suggest relationships between the series and social patterns in the broader culture. This dissertation describes the importance of studying television content and its relationship to media culture and social influence. The analysis included a quantitative content analysis of friendship maintenance, and a qualitative textual analysis of alternative families, gender, race, and class representations. The analysis found the characters displayed actions of selectivity, only accepting a small group of friends in their social circle based on friendship, gender, race, and social class distinctions as the six characters formed a culture that no one else was allowed to enter. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This project stems from countless years of watching and appreciating television. When I was in college, a good friend told me about a series that featured six young people who discussed their lives over countless cups of coffee. Even though the series was in its seventh year at the time, I did not start to watch the show until that season. -

On a Friday the 13th in 1307, thousands of Knights Templar were arrested on orders from King Philip IV of France because of suspicions that their secret initiation rituals made them enemies of the faith. After years of torture, they were burned at the stake. -

THE MUMMY PORTRAITS OF FAG EL-GAMOUS KERRY MUHLESTEIN AND BETHANY JENSEN Kerry Muhlestein is an associate professor of ancient scripture at Brigham Young University. Bethany Jensen is an archaeology major with a minor in Ancient Near Eastern Studies. he necropolis of Fag el-Gamous has been under excavation by Brigham TYoung University for more than thirty years. In those thirty years, more than 1700 burials1 have been excavated by Brigham Young University. In all of those years of excavation, not a single mummy portrait has been found, even though many of the mummies were interred during the era when some people from this area were having mummy portraits created for their burial. Despite this fact, our research has shown that Fag el-Gamous is the source of at least seven mummy portraits unearthed at the turn of the 20th century. -

TIME AND TABOO: DEATH DRIVE IN OUTER SPACE Isabel Millar Heptapods and their discontents Psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic theory is often wrongly accused by those who do not care to take it seriously, of being a ‘humanism’ and therefore not capable of addressing the new conceptual challenges that the post-human, post-apocalyptic, post-Anthropocenic1 era may present us with. The persistent mischaracterization of psychoanalysis as somehow reducing grand theoretical, political and philosophical concerns into petty psychological questions of personal experience has meant that often the radical conceptual possibilities of psychoanalysis in both theory and praxis are missed. Having said that, the opportunities to put psychoanalysis to work outside its usual scope, even by those sympathetic to the psychoanalytic edifice, are often overlooked in favour of seemingly more well-suited theoretical frameworks2. This we see in the case of neuroscientific collaborations with AI companies for example under the auspices of Nick Bostrom’s Future of Humanity Institute, Elon Musk’s Neuralink, and the Blue Brain project among others. The challenge then is to push psychoanalysis beyond its comfortable realms and outside of the usual concerns with either the clinical subject or cultural critique of media objects and ask rather how may psychoanalysis become a tool with which we ask new theoretical questions that space travel and different modes of thought (including artificial and non-human) and their concomitant challenges presents the human subject with? Given its shared ability to engage the unconscious and allow us to experience (as dreams so often do) forms of time and space altering logic, often the way to approach these questions is through cinema. -

MARJORIE KELLY Three Views of the Attack on Pearl Harbor: Navy, Civilian, and Resident Perspectives POPULAR UNDERSTANDING of the attack on Pearl Harbor will undoubtedly be colored by the release of the $135 million epic Pearl Harbor, the fifth most expensive film in movie history. Described as "an adventure/romance in which everything blows up at the end," Disney's Touchstone Pictures recreated the December 7, 1941 Japa- nese attack on the U.S. Navy as its visual climax with an impressive array of special effects. During the film's production, Honolulu Star- Bulletin journalist Burl Burlingame was already at work enumerating the movie's technological inaccuracies and shortcomings.1 In a sec- ond article which focused on the film's portrayal of race, Burlingame noted that originally the producers, executives, and director of Pearl Harbor said they would spare no expense in accurately portraying the attack—even obtaining the approval of veterans groups. During the filming, however, producer Jerry Bruckheimer "waffled mightily on the subject of accuracy," recharacterizing his project as "gee-whiz-it's- just-entertainment."2 With the film's release on Memorial Day of 2001, a new generation's perception of the attack will likely forever be influenced by the images and impressions engendered by the film. Also influential, however, have been the two films used to orient the more than one million visitors a year to the USS Arizona Memo- rial, administered by the National Park Service (NPS) on the Pearl Marjorie Kelly is a cultural anthropologist whose research specialty is the representation of culture in museum and tourist settings. -

Numerous societies, the argument goes, have a seemingly innate need to purge sins via an innocent victim. The killing of this victim constitutes the core of sacrifice traditions; explaining the efficacy of these rites outlines in turn the inner workings of all sacrifices, if not all rituals. I do not believe, however, that the enigmatic figure of the scapegoat can support a universal theory of sacrifice, especially if the general term “scapegoat” turns out refer to a variety of rituals with very different goals. Rene Girard’s extremely influential theory of the scapegoat includes a biological basis for the importance of the figure (Girard, 1977). According to Girard, humans are naturally aggressive, a la Konrad Lorenz. This innate aggression was channeled into an unending series of attacks and counterattacks during the earliest periods of history. A better outlet for aggression was to find a scapegoat whose death would stop the cycle of retribution (p. 2). For Girard, Oedipus was a human scapegoat, placing this model 2 at the center of Greek culture in addition to Biblical religious traditions (p. 72). Jonathan Smith’s observations on Girard’s model in “The Domestication of Sacrifice” are both simple and devastating (1987). -

3 The Hawaiian Political Transformation from 1770 to 1796 No one alive in 1778 would have predicted that the Hawaiian Islands would be unified in their lifetime, or that Kamehameha would be the chief to bring it about. To understand how the potential for unification noted by scholars became a reality requires a detailed examination of political and military structural transformations that picked up momentum after 1770. Robert Hommon discusses global writings on warfare and state formation in The Ancient Hawaiian State, including the work of Charles Tilly and Robert Carneiro, and makes a strong connection between the two. Hommon concludes that warfare was a causative link but not a crucial factor in Hawaiian state formation because war was pursued by states and non-states alike. Rather, to Hommon, the key influence on Hawaiian state formation was the political innovation of ‘both holding centralised political power and delegating it’.1 This and the following chapter contest Hommon’s dichotomy by arguing that changes to the nature of political and military power in the late 18th century were interrelated. Escalating chiefly rivalries spurred military reforms and forced chiefs to delegate authority to accommodate a structure of warfare that mobilised and relied upon a greater proportion of the polities’ residents and resources. Consider carefully the scope of your cemetery survey project. The scope of a cemetery survey project can vary according to your established goals and/or your organizational resources. For instance, your project could be to record the locations of all the cemeteries in the entire county, or you could be interested in just recording the information about one specific cemetery. Either is beneficial, especially when taking into consideration what you can realistically achieve. You can always do more later and add to previously gathered information. Consider the following when planning the scope of your cemetery survey: • For a county-wide cemetery location survey, the main tasks are finding all the cemeteries in the county, making a record of the locations, and marking them on a map. • For a survey of an individual cemetery, tasks include: o Determining its boundaries accurately, including unmarked graves; mapping within the cemetery boundaries the layout of graves and plots. o Recording grave marker inscriptions and keying them to a map of the cemetery’s layout. o Photographing all grave markers, monuments, and other features of the cemetery, referencing their locations on the cemetery map. o Recording the condition of grave markers, monuments, fencing, and other features. o Recording the condition of the landscape (erosion problems, plant overgrowth), and other observable problems, such as vandalism. 2. Determine the underlying purpose of your cemetery survey project. In other words, ask yourself specifically what is the end use of the information you are gathering.
