8th World Kungfu Championships Emeishan, China 8th World Kungfu Championships Emeishan, China A Brief Introduction to Emeishan City Emeishan City is located on the southwestern edge of Sichuan Basin with an area of 1,183 square kilometres. Mount Emei is a cultural and natural heritage of the world and a national AAAAA scenic area. With the rich cultural deposits and tourism resources, Emeishan is an excellent tourist city in China and an emerging tourist city in Asia. Emeishan is rich in resources and has the most typical and best preserved subtropical vegetations in the world. With more than 3,700 types of higher plants, accounting for one tenth of the total amount in the country, the city is known as the “Botany Kingdom”; with more than 2,300 types of wild animals, it is known as the “Animal Kingdom”; with 63.3% of the forest coverage rate, it is known as the “Natural Oxygen Bar”; with most townships located at the elevation between 800 and 1,500 meters, it is also known as “Emei Nanshan” Health Preservation Resort. Yellow Emperor, Emperor Taizong of Song, Emperor Kangxi, Li Bai, Su Shi, Xu Xiake, Sun Simiao, Nan Huaijin, Deng Xiaoping, Guo Moruo, Xi Jinping, etc. have all been on Mount Emei, leaving many anecdotes. At present, Emeishan City has expanded the “nine-in-one” industrial chain including a cup of tea, a bottle of wine, a bucket of water, a bowl of soup, a set of quan, a scene of play, a piece of song, a piece of needle and an event of exhibition.

  • Antonino Forte, the Hostage an Shigao and His Offspring: an Iranian Family in China, Italian School of East Asian Studies Occasional Papers 6
© T’oung Pao 84 (1998): 173–177. Antonino Forte, The Hostage An Shigao and his Offspring: An Iranian Family in China, Italian School of East Asian Studies Occasional Papers 6. Kyoto: Istituto Italiano di Cultura, Scuola di Studi sull’Asia Orientale, 1995. In this small but thought-provoking volume Dr. Antonino Forte deals with a curious enigma that has escaped the attention of practically all historians of early Chinese Buddhism (including the present reviewer): the mystery surrounding the identity of An Shigao 安世高, the first known Buddhist mis- sionary on Chinese soil. Virtually all studies that so far have been devoted to this patriarch of Chinese Buddhism have been based upon biographical and bibliographical data of Buddhist origin: the largely legendary accounts of his life (or rather “lives”) in the early sixth century collections Gaoseng zhuan 高僧傳 (GSZ) and Chu sanzang ji ji 出三藏記集 (CSZJJ), a few early colophons and prefaces, and the list of titles of 34 texts that were attrib- uted to An Shigao in Dao’an’s 道安 catalogue of 374 CE (preserved in CSZJJ, j. 2, pp. 5c–6b). On the basis of those materials a few data have become generally accepted: An Shigao originally had been a crown-prince in Par- thia (Anxi 安息); when his father had died he renounced the throne and became a monk. He travelled to China and arrived in Luoyang in 148 CE, where he translated a great number of Hīnavāna texts. An Shigao is the earliest known member of a group of foreign missionaries and translators that constituted the nucleus of a small Buddhist community.

Foguangsi on Mount Wutai: Architecture of Politics and Religion Abstract Foguangsi (Monastery of Buddha’s Radiance) is a monastic complex that stands on a high terrace on a mountainside, in the southern ranges of Mount Wutai, located in present-day Shanxi province. The mountain range of Wutai has long been regarded as the sacred abode of the Bodhisattva Mañjuśrī and a prominent center of the Avataṃsaka School. Among the monasteries that have dotted its landscape, Foguangsi is arguably one of the best-known sites that were frequented by pilgrims. The er discovery of Foguangsi by modern scholars in the early 20th century has been considered a “crowning moment in the modern search for China’s ancient architecture”. Most notably, the Buddha Hall, which was erected in the Tang dynasty (618-907 CE), was seen as the ideal of a “vigorous style” of its time, and an embodiment of an architectural achievement at the peak of Chinese civilization.

  • Staging Modern Statehood: World Exhibitions and the Rhetoric of Publishing in Late Qing China, 1851-1910
STAGING MODERN STATEHOOD: WORLD EXHIBITIONS AND THE RHETORIC OF PUBLISHING IN LATE QING CHINA, 1851-1910 BY HYUNGJU HUR DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in East Asian Languages and Cultures in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2012 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Dan Shao, Chair Professor Kai-Wing Chow, Director of Research Professor Ronald P. Toby Professor Teemu Ruskola, Emory University Abstract This dissertation examines how the objective of the Qing government to stage its modern statehood through participating in the world exhibitions and hosting the Nanyang Industrial Exposition of 1910, the first national / international exhibition of China, was challenged and transformed by various agents with different views and rhetorics regarding the representation of China at the exhibitions. The Imperial Maritime Customs, a product of European imperialist encroachment on China, echoed the imperialist discourse on an “uncivilized” China. Simultaneously, Japan strove to demonstrate its status as the only “modern” or “civilized” state in Asia at the world exhibitions and continuously attempted to overwhelm China with its more grandiose exhibits, including those from its colony, Taiwan. In the wake of the Hundred Days’ Reforms of 1898, Chinese intellectuals were becoming increasingly antagonistic toward the Qing government, whose incompetence and corruption were considered major reasons for the humiliating representations of China at world exhibitions, particularly those at the Osaka Exhibition of 1903 and the St. Louis Exposition of 1904. Furthermore, by taking advantage of a transnational network of publication operating beyond the control of the Qing government, the Chinese reformers and revolutionaries circulated rhetorical attacks on the Qing government, undermining its political legitimacy.
