Between 1933 and 1969, the Green Sheet was offered as a service to civic, educational, and religious centers informing patrons which motion pictures contained potentially offensive and prurient content for younger viewers and families. When the Motion Picture Association of America began underwriting its costs of publication, the Green Sheet was used as a bartering device by the film industry to root out municipal censorship boards and legislative bills mandating state classification measures. The Green Sheet underscored tensions between film industry executives such as Eric Johnston and Jack Valenti, movie theater owners, politicians, and patrons demanding more integrity in monitoring changing film content in the rapidly progressive era of the 1960s. Using a system of symbolic advisory ratings, the Green Sheet set an early precedent for the age-based types of ratings the motion picture industry would adopt in its own rating system of 1968. -

Translation, Reputation, and Authorship in Eighteenth-Century Britain by Catherine Fleming A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of English University of Toronto © Copyright by Catherine Fleming 2018 Translation, Reputation, and Authorship in Eighteenth-Century Britain Catherine Fleming Doctor of Philosophy Department of English University of Toronto 2018 Abstract This thesis explores the reputation-building strategies which shaped eighteenth-century translation practices by examining authors of both translations and original works whose lives and writing span the long eighteenth century. Recent studies in translation have often focused on the way in which adaptation shapes the reception of a foreign work, questioning the assumptions and cultural influences which become visible in the process of transformation. My research adds a new dimension to the emerging scholarship on translation by examining how foreign texts empower their English translators, offering opportunities for authors to establish themselves within a literary community. Translation, adaptation, and revision allow writers to set up advantageous comparisons to other authors, times, and literary milieux and to create a product which benefits from the cachet of foreignness and the authority implied by a pre-existing audience, successful reception history, and the standing of the original author. I argue that John Dryden, Alexander Pope, Eliza Haywood, and Elizabeth Carter integrate this legitimizing process into their conscious attempts at self-fashioning as they work with existing texts to demonstrate creative and compositional skills, establish kinship to canonical authors, and both ii construct and insert themselves within a literary canon, exercising a unique form of control over their contemporary reputation. -

The Great Undefined Top There is one essential problem with mathematics as it stands: the fact that it is based entirely on the concept of division. That is, all of its formulae and theorems are founded on the idea of the number one, which is divided (has separation) from zero by some amount only knowable as itself, the number one. Repeated division produces 2, and 3, etc. There is a system of mathematical shorthand called “Typographical Number Theory”, from which it should theoretically be possible to write any conceivable mathematical formula or theorem, using only five basic axioms. These axioms are the basis of the current model of mathematics in its entirety. However, Kurt Gödel showed that it is possible to create any number of theorems using that system which could neither be proved to be true, nor ultimately denied, within the rules of the system;1 and this is done by positing a theorem in T.N.T. which reads: “Sentence G: This theorem is not a part of T.N.T.” The actual formulation of this theorem within the rules of T.N.T. is theoretically possible; and it has been taken as proof that all possible systems of logic are necessarily incomplete.2 There is an obvious point to be made here, which is that in every respect the “G-sentence” is equivalent in its unknowability to the number zero. -

Pierre Klossowski (1905-2001) is, with little doubt, one of the twentieth century’s most singular and intriguing figures. From the outset, his life was never markedly orthodox. His early years were polyglot and peripatetic. He was born in Paris to the painter, art critic, and stage designer Erich Klossowski and to Elisabeth Dorothea Spiro, a notable painter in her own right (under the name Baladine), both of whom were originally from Poland and had German nationality. Most of his teenage years were spent in Switzerland, alongside his younger brother, the future painter Balthus, and his mother, who, after separating from her husband in 1917, embarked on a lengthy amorous liaison with the poet, Rainer Maria Rilke. Happily, however, through the good offices of Rilke, and as a result of the latter’s friendship with André Gide, Pierre was finally able to return to France where, among other things, he helped Gide correct the proofs of Les Faux- monnayeurs before being enrolled at the prestigious lycée Janson de Sailly in the 16th arrondissement. During the 1930s, having now acquired French nationality, Klossowski remained a peripheral, eccentric figure, albeit one who found himself at the often controversial cross-section between some of the most influential intellectual movements of the time. In 1932, he began work as secretary to René Laforgue, one of the leading figures in French psychoanalysis, and was encouraged by Marie Bonaparte to emulate her pioneering work on Edgar Allan Poe by undertaking a similar study of the Marquis de Sade, which, when Klossowski’s article was published, caused such scandal he was promptly dismissed. -
The Baphomet a Discourse Analysis of the Symbol in Three Contexts
UPPSALA UNIVERSITY Department of Theology History of Religions and Social Sciences of Religion C2, 15 credits Spring 2013 Supervisor: Eva Hellman The Baphomet A discourse analysis of the symbol in three contexts by Carl Karlson-Weimann Abstract This essay examines how the Baphomet symbol is understood in three different contexts. Firstly, the understanding of the Baphomet is analysed in the book Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie, written by the French 19th century occultist Éliphas Lévi. Secondly, I analyse the symbol in The Satanic Bible by Anton Szandor LaVey, the person responsible for having introduced Satanism to modernity. Thirdly, the Baphomet as understood in contemporary metal music culture is analysed. Ultimately, I find the Baphomet to be viewed as a symbol associated with Satan, but in very different ways. The reason to why these differences exist I find to be partially explained by the initial mystery surrounding the Baphomet. The understanding of the Baphomet depends also on the role of Satan in each context. Due to Satan representing different things in the three different contexts, so does the Baphomet. Translation has played a central role in the formation of American linguistic, literary, cultural, and national identity. The authors of the American Renaissance were multilingual, involved in the cultural task of translation in many different ways. But the importance of translation has been little examined in American literary scholarship, the condition of which has been exclusively monolingual. This study makes clear the following points. First, translation served as an important agency in the building of American national language, literature, and culture. Second, the conception of translation as a means for domesticating foreign influences in antebellum American literary culture was itself a translation of a traditionally European idea of translation since the Renaissance, and more specifically, of the modern German concept of it. Third, despite its ethnocentric, nationalistic, and imperialistic tendency, translation sometimes complicated the identity-formation process. The American Renaissance writers worked in the complex international culture of translation in an age of world literature, a nationalist-cosmopolitan concept that Goethe promoted in the early nineteenth century. Those American authors’ texts often take part in and sometimes come up against the violence of translation, which obliterates the marks of otherness in foreign languages and cultures. -
