Kosaki Onodera formerlyChitoge. Claude spying on his relationship with Chitoge Kirisaki. Being called "Bean sprout" By Chitoge. One summer ten years ago, Raku made a promise to a girl to marry her once they reunite. The promise girl exchanged a pendant with Raku and held on to a key that would unlock it once they meet again. Ten years had passed and Raku has no memory of the girl's name or what she looks like but remembers the promise he made. After he started his fake relationship with Chitoge Kirisakihe encounters a series of events where he learns that Chitoge KirisakiKosaki OnoderaMarika Tachibanaand Yui Kanakura all possess keys that are connected to his pendant and that they all met each other ten years ago. They all seemed to have made a promise with a boy ten years ago too. This makes all four of the girls be the possible promised girl until Yui returned to Raku and confirmed herself that she is not one of the possible promised girls, despite having a key. His interest in the keys that Chitoge, Onodera, Marika, and Yui possess can get him in trouble for certain situations. He will go to great lengths for his pendant and freaks out if he loses it. Nisekoi: False Love: Whats in a Name? and Raku had tried opening the pendant with her key but it broke in the process. After Raku gets it fixed, Shu's uncle says that the only way to open it is to break it open. Raku is also the heir to the Yakuza family as the only son but wishes to not take the position, even if he is urged by the members of the gang. As a child, as evidenced in flashbacks, Raku would go as far as to put himself in difficult situations for others' benefits. He is kind and considerate as said by Nisekoi: False Love: Whats in a Name? girls in the and it is also what gets them to fall in love with him. He is easy to get along with and is highly motivated by past actions. He can also be highly oblivious of academic faculties and is highly unaware, at times, of certain conversations that he can easily misinterpret, either because of the vagueness of the circumstance, or the fact that he is lost in thought about Chitoge or Onodera. He is dull as he is Nisekoi: False Love: Whats in a Name? to the romantic feelings of the girls around him, especially Nisekoi: False Love: Whats in a Name? and Onodera's. He is well-educated and is slow to anger, but will Nisekoi: False Love: Whats in a Name? with the same emotions or tone, most of the time, if he is addressed as a Nisekoi: False Love: Whats in a Name? sprout by Chitoge. He can use his faculties to run in order to escape whenever he feels that he is in a situation. Raku is a little taller than average for a high schooler and has messy, black hair. Nisekoi: False Love: Whats in a Name? has lightly tanned, fair skin and also has a big scar on the right side of his forehead. In the winter, Raku wears his school's uniform which consists of green and white slip-on shoes, black pants with a green belt, a white long-sleeved shirt, and the school uniform jacket. The summer school uniform's only difference is the white shirt is short-sleeved and the school uniform jacket is not worn. He is generally seen wearing the pendant he was given ten years ago beneath his shirt. While swimming, Raku doesn't wear a shirt but wears the school's navy blue swim shorts. He is also seen to wear red shorts in At the Beach. Raku generally wears his outfit when he is at home, and casual clothing when he hangs out with the gang or on a date with Chitoge. When he is doing outdoor activities as shown in Temple Festival and Losshe wears a cloth around his head. Raku is the heir to the Yakuza family and is urged and respected by all the members in the gang for him to become their next leader. Raku personally wants to turn down the role and wants to become a civil servant. Going to school, Raku thinks about the girl he made the promise to marry to ten years ago and pulls out his pendant. As he observes it, a girl jumps over the school's high fence and accidentally knees him in the face in the process. The girl apologizes and runs to class because she's late for class. He begins his day, hating it after he got kneed but enjoys it again when his crush, Kosaki, offers him a bandage in the place where he got kneed. As class starts, Raku's teacher presents a new transfer student named Chitoge Kirisaki who was actually the girl who kneed Raku that morning. Raku instantly recognizes her and starts complaining about the accident. The two clash but end up sitting next to each other in class. Raku declines Marika's confession. Raku has started noticing that he has feelings for both Kosaki and Chitoge. He, later on, finds out that he has developed the feeling of love for Chitoge. When Shu invites everyone to go stargazing along Bonyari High's rooftop, Raku passes out and Chitoge overhears Kosaki confessing to Raku. Chitoge later confirms that Raku likes Kosaki, so she runs away from Japan. Tsugumi confesses to Raku, then tells him to save Chitoge. They meet back at the location '10 years ago' and Raku confesses to Chitoge after rejecting Kosaki. In the epilogue, Raku is shown to have succeeded his father as head of the Shuei Clanat the same time receiving a job as a government worker placed in the department of public safety. He is also busy with plans for his upcoming wedding with Chitoge, hiring Shu to send out his invitations to all of their friends. He soon reunites with Chitoge at their promised spot where they reminisce on their journey together and current lives before Raku proposes to her once more and she happily accepts it. They trade jokes for a while before Raku moves to leave but Chitoge quickly stops him asking for him to kiss her. At first, the two are nervous since it was both of their first kiss, but in the end, they shared their first kiss as a couple. The kiss was awkward as they hit their teeth and both argue in the way usually do about things. Sign In Don't have an account? Start a Wiki. Read at your own risks. Contents [ show ]. Categories :. • The Origins of the Magical Girl Genre Note: This First Chapter Is an Almost
The origins of the magical girl genre Note: this first chapter is an almost verbatim copy of the excellent introduction from the BESM: Sailor Moon Role-Playing Game and Resource Book by Mark C. MacKinnon et al. I took the liberty of changing a few names according to official translations and contemporary transliterations. It focuses on the traditional magical girls “for girls”, and ignores very very early works like Go Nagai's Cutie Honey, which essentially created a market more oriented towards the male audience; we shall deal with such things in the next chapter. Once upon a time, an American live-action sitcom called Bewitched, came to the Land of the Rising Sun... The magical girl genre has a rather long and important history in Japan. The magical girls of manga and Japanese animation (or anime) are a rather unique group of characters. They defy easy classification, and yet contain elements from many of the best loved fairy tales and children's stories throughout the world. Many countries have imported these stories for their children to enjoy (most notably France, Italy and Spain) but the traditional format of this particular genre of manga and anime still remains mostly unknown to much of the English-speaking world. The very first magical girl seen on television was created about fifty years ago. Mahoutsukai Sally (or “Sally the Witch”) began airing on Japanese television in 1966, in black and white. The first season of the show proved to be so popular that it was renewed for a second year, moving into the era of color television in 1967.

  • Negotiating Magical Space and Identity in Puella Magi Madoka Magica
humanities Article Becoming the Labyrinth: Negotiating Magical Space and Identity in Puella Magi Madoka Magica Sara Cleto * and Erin Kathleen Bahl Department of English, The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH 43210, USA; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +1-404-808-8407 Academic Editor: Claudia Schwabe Received: 2 March 2016; Accepted: 30 March 2016; Published: 6 April 2016 Abstract: In the magical girl anime series Puella Magi Madoka Magica, middle-school girls receive the power and responsibility to fight witches in exchange for making a wish. The series has connections to many different genres and narrative traditions within the realm of folkloristics. However, the folkloric genre most relevant to the ethos and aesthetics of Madoka is that of the fairy tale. Drawing on Bill Ellis’s concept of “fairy-telling” and scholarship on new media composition, in this paper we seek to investigate labyrinths as acts of embodied composing—not lairs of evil or destruction but rather creative material memory work that negotiates grief and despair. Many of the series’ action sequences unfold in “labyrinths,” the magical spaces controlled by witches. By composing a labyrinth, witches can simultaneously reshape their environment and create a powerful statement about identity through personalized performance in narrative spaces that they control. In particular, we argue that both the frameworks of “fairy tale” and “new media” give us useful analytical resources for beginning to make sense of the intricately complex phenomenon of Madoka’s labyrinths. Keywords: fairy tale; new media; anime; magical girl; labyrinth; Madoka 1. Introduction In the anime series Puella Magi Madoka Magica [1] (hereafter Madoka), a granted wish marks not a happily-ever-after ending but rather a complicated beginning.

Tran Doctor of Philosophy in English University of California, Los Angeles, 2017 Professor Rachel C. Lee, Chair This dissertation expands existing accounts of the history of Asian racialization in the United States by examining the various discursive, symbolic, and affective economies through which the “Asian girl” has been trafficked. I mobilize the “Asian girl” as a critical framework for attending to an especially vulnerable, young female population and girlification as a particular mode of racialization. I examine the Asian girl queered by militarization, the kawaii (cute) Asian girl, the cybernetic/transgenic Asian girl, and the feral Asian girl as critical sites for seriously grappling with material conditions of political constraint and dependency. The project identifies girlish vulnerability as a structure of disavowal/contempt in a historically masculinist minoritarian politics that emphasizes autonomy, sovereignty, and militant resistance and takes forms of vulnerability as a basis theorizing an alternative affective politics. My research draws on the works of Asian/American novelists, poets, and visual artists for how they (re)imagine Asian girls in lateral associations of compoundedness, eroticism, and nascent political solidarity.

  • Tracing the Japanese Gothic in Madoka Magika with Blood: the Estrangement, Abjection, and Sublime Erasure of the Spectralised Mahō Shōjo Exemplum
Asian Journal of Social Sciences & Humanities Vol. 3(4) November 2014 __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Tracing the Japanese Gothic in Madoka Magika with Blood: The Estrangement, Abjection, and Sublime Erasure of the Spectralised Mahō Shōjo Exemplum Daniel Elisha Rachovitsky Dartmouth College, Cincinnati, OH, USA. [email protected] ABSTRACT This essay is an in-depth analysis of the Japanese Gothic in anime. The two anime of examination and inter-textual comparison include the 2011 critically acclaimed series Mahō Shōjo Madoka Magika (Puella Magi Madoka Magika) by Urobuchi Gen and the 2000 film Blood: The Last Vampire by Kamiyami Kenji and Oshii Mamoro. The focus is to explore the Japanese Gothic or elements of fushigi in these two anime – tracing, in particular, how Urobuchi dismantles the mahō shōjo as a genre by using the esthetic of his predecessor Oshii. Employing a deconstructive perspective, the author attempts to weave together the series and film through discursive analysis in hopes of unveiling the dialogic momentum hidden between the two works. As a piece of scholarship, this paper attempts to catapult discussion
