The Origins of the Magical Girl Genre Note: This First Chapter Is an Almost
The origins of the magical girl genre Note: this first chapter is an almost verbatim copy of the excellent introduction from the BESM: Sailor Moon Role-Playing Game and Resource Book by Mark C. MacKinnon et al. I took the liberty of changing a few names according to official translations and contemporary transliterations. It focuses on the traditional magical girls “for girls”, and ignores very very early works like Go Nagai's Cutie Honey, which essentially created a market more oriented towards the male audience; we shall deal with such things in the next chapter. Once upon a time, an American live-action sitcom called Bewitched, came to the Land of the Rising Sun... The magical girl genre has a rather long and important history in Japan. The magical girls of manga and Japanese animation (or anime) are a rather unique group of characters. They defy easy classification, and yet contain elements from many of the best loved fairy tales and children's stories throughout the world. Many countries have imported these stories for their children to enjoy (most notably France, Italy and Spain) but the traditional format of this particular genre of manga and anime still remains mostly unknown to much of the English-speaking world. The very first magical girl seen on television was created about fifty years ago. Mahoutsukai Sally (or “Sally the Witch”) began airing on Japanese television in 1966, in black and white. The first season of the show proved to be so popular that it was renewed for a second year, moving into the era of color television in 1967. -
Negotiating Magical Space and Identity in Puella Magi Madoka Magica
humanities Article Becoming the Labyrinth: Negotiating Magical Space and Identity in Puella Magi Madoka Magica Sara Cleto * and Erin Kathleen Bahl Department of English, The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH 43210, USA; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +1-404-808-8407 Academic Editor: Claudia Schwabe Received: 2 March 2016; Accepted: 30 March 2016; Published: 6 April 2016 Abstract: In the magical girl anime series Puella Magi Madoka Magica, middle-school girls receive the power and responsibility to fight witches in exchange for making a wish. The series has connections to many different genres and narrative traditions within the realm of folkloristics. However, the folkloric genre most relevant to the ethos and aesthetics of Madoka is that of the fairy tale. Drawing on Bill Ellis’s concept of “fairy-telling” and scholarship on new media composition, in this paper we seek to investigate labyrinths as acts of embodied composing—not lairs of evil or destruction but rather creative material memory work that negotiates grief and despair. Many of the series’ action sequences unfold in “labyrinths,” the magical spaces controlled by witches. By composing a labyrinth, witches can simultaneously reshape their environment and create a powerful statement about identity through personalized performance in narrative spaces that they control. In particular, we argue that both the frameworks of “fairy tale” and “new media” give us useful analytical resources for beginning to make sense of the intricately complex phenomenon of Madoka’s labyrinths. Keywords: fairy tale; new media; anime; magical girl; labyrinth; Madoka 1. Introduction In the anime series Puella Magi Madoka Magica [1] (hereafter Madoka), a granted wish marks not a happily-ever-after ending but rather a complicated beginning. -

Tran Doctor of Philosophy in English University of California, Los Angeles, 2017 Professor Rachel C. Lee, Chair This dissertation expands existing accounts of the history of Asian racialization in the United States by examining the various discursive, symbolic, and affective economies through which the “Asian girl” has been trafficked. I mobilize the “Asian girl” as a critical framework for attending to an especially vulnerable, young female population and girlification as a particular mode of racialization. I examine the Asian girl queered by militarization, the kawaii (cute) Asian girl, the cybernetic/transgenic Asian girl, and the feral Asian girl as critical sites for seriously grappling with material conditions of political constraint and dependency. The project identifies girlish vulnerability as a structure of disavowal/contempt in a historically masculinist minoritarian politics that emphasizes autonomy, sovereignty, and militant resistance and takes forms of vulnerability as a basis theorizing an alternative affective politics. My research draws on the works of Asian/American novelists, poets, and visual artists for how they (re)imagine Asian girls in lateral associations of compoundedness, eroticism, and nascent political solidarity. -
Tracing the Japanese Gothic in Madoka Magika with Blood: the Estrangement, Abjection, and Sublime Erasure of the Spectralised Mahō Shōjo Exemplum
Asian Journal of Social Sciences & Humanities Vol. 3(4) November 2014 __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Tracing the Japanese Gothic in Madoka Magika with Blood: The Estrangement, Abjection, and Sublime Erasure of the Spectralised Mahō Shōjo Exemplum Daniel Elisha Rachovitsky Dartmouth College, Cincinnati, OH, USA. [email protected] ABSTRACT This essay is an in-depth analysis of the Japanese Gothic in anime. The two anime of examination and inter-textual comparison include the 2011 critically acclaimed series Mahō Shōjo Madoka Magika (Puella Magi Madoka Magika) by Urobuchi Gen and the 2000 film Blood: The Last Vampire by Kamiyami Kenji and Oshii Mamoro. The focus is to explore the Japanese Gothic or elements of fushigi in these two anime – tracing, in particular, how Urobuchi dismantles the mahō shōjo as a genre by using the esthetic of his predecessor Oshii. Employing a deconstructive perspective, the author attempts to weave together the series and film through discursive analysis in hopes of unveiling the dialogic momentum hidden between the two works. As a piece of scholarship, this paper attempts to catapult discussion
