Since that time, different Pre-Inca cultures have occupied the land that is today Lima. With the arrival of the Incas and later the Spaniards, the landscape became speckled with the huacas, churches, and monuments that today make up the historical patchwork that is our capital city. • Jorge Basadre's “Peruvian History of Peru,”
Jorge Basadre’s “Peruvian History of Peru,” or the Poetic Aporia of Historicism Mark Thurner We need a Peruvian history of Peru. By Peruvian history of Peru I mean a history that studies the past of this land from the point of view of the formation of Peru itself. We must insist upon an authentic history ‘of ’ Peru, that is, of Peru as an idea and entity that is born, grows, and develops. The most important personage in Peruvian history is Peru. Jorge Basadre, Meditaciones sobre el destino histórico del Perú Although many gifted historians graced the stage of twentieth-century Peru- vian letters, Jorge Basadre Grohmann (1903 – 1980) was clearly the dominant figure. Today Basadre is universally celebrated as the country’s most sagacious and representative historian, and he is commonly referred to as “our historian of the Republic.” Libraries, avenues, and colleges are named after him. The year 2003 was “The Year of Basadre” in Peru, with nearly every major cultural institution in Lima organizing an event in his honor.1 The National University HAHR editors and the anonymous readers of earlier versions of this article deserve my thanks. Support from the Social Science Research Council, the Fulbright-Hays Program, and the University of Florida is gratefully acknowledged. All translations are mine. 1. There is no systematic work on Basadre, but several Peruvian scholars have reflected upon aspects of his work, and the centennial celebration has prompted the publication of conference proceedings. See Pablo Macera, Conversaciones con Basadre (Lima: Mosca Azul, 1979); Alberto Flores Galindo, “Jorge Basadre o la voluntad de persistir,” Allpanchis 14, no.

  • Land of the Four Quarters' Or the Tahuantinsuyu Empire
The Incans gave their empire the name, 'Land of the Four Quarters' or the Tahuantinsuyu Empire. It stretched north to south some 2,500 miles along the high mountainous Andean range from Colombia to Chile and reached west to east from the dry coastal desert called Atacama to the steamy Amazonian rain forest. The Incas ruled the Andean Cordillera, second in height and harshness to the Himalayas. Daily life was spent at altitudes up to 15,000 feet and ritual life extended up to 22,057 feet to Llullaillaco in Chile, the highest Inca sacrificial site known today. The mountains dominated Incan society. The mountain peaks were worshiped as gods. The Andes created a natural barrier between the coastal desert on one side and the jungle on the other. The snow-capped mountains were full of deep gorges. Lodged between the mountains and the Pacific Ocean, the arid desert plain dominated the entire western flank of the Inca Empire. Rivers created infrequent strips of fertile land as they cut across the lowlands from the highlands, and the Incas built dams and irrigation systems in order to maximize available water for farming purposes. Peru Peru is the world's potato capital. Two-thirds of the world's potato crops originate in Europe, but the production there cannot compare with the diversity of tubers found in this South American country. They range in color from purple to blue, from yellow to brown. The taste of different potatoes varies broadly, explaining why these vegetables are used in all kind of dishes from appetizers to desserts.

Inca rulers divided their empire into four parts, or suyos, and called it Tawantinsuyo, the “Empire of Four Parts.” The term Quinto Suyo (Fifth Part) combines Spanish with Quechua to draw attention to the sizeable, but often overlooked, segment of the Peruvian population with African heritage that claims a history of slavery, resistance, and survival. Quinto Suyo is a term popular with Afro-Peruvian advocacy groups fighting the marginalization of blacks, racial discrimination, and the omission of their history from most textbooks. By highlighting the little-known experiences and contributions of Peru’s black population, the new African diaspora history from Peru continues in this vein of exploring Afro-Peruvians’ deep Ethnohistory 56:2 (Spring 2009) DOI 10.1215/00141801-2008-060 Copyright 2009 by American Society for Ethnohistory 304 Review Essay historical engagement with wider Peruvian society and its institutions and practices of power.
