Goldstein (1927-1995) housed at the Memorial University of Newfoundland Folklore and Language Archive (MUNFLA). Kenneth Goldstein, a distinguished American folklore scholar and theorist, spent two years (1976-78) as the head of the Department of Folklore at the Memorial University of Newfoundland. From that time until his death on 11 November 1995 he was a Research Associate at Memorial. In this capacity and with several local collectors, from 1978 until 1990, he amassed a collection of folksongs from various parts of Newfoundland and Labrador. His Newfoundland collections came from St. John’s, the Southern Shore, St. Mary’s Bay, Placentia Bay, the Burin Peninsula, Conception Bay, Trinity Bay, Bonavista Bay, White Bay, Fogo Island, the Great Northern Peninsula and the Codroy Region. He also recorded songs in Central Labrador and the southern coast of Labrador. About 3400 songs were collected by Goldstein from 243 performers in the province. The Goldstein materials at MUNFLA comprise 208 tapes, organized into twenty-three collections. Each tape is uniquely identified by its own shelflist number (prefixed by an F- or a C-, depending on whether it is a workcopy), and each collection by its accession number. Any song can be fully cited by its title and the combination of shelflist and accession numbers assigned to it. Goldstein planned a linked series of books to make available to scholars and the public his entire Newfoundland collection. Unfortunately his death came before he was able to bring the project to fruition. Nonetheless, he had through his life in Newfoundland published several articles and notes based on songs in his MUNFLA collections. In the early 1980s he, with collaborators, published five short notes on Newfoundland songs and singers in a short-lived magazine of Newfoundland and Labrador folklore, The Livyere.1 His main contributions to a 1983 highschool textbook series on Newfoundland folk literature were based, in part, on his fieldwork collections. One was called Folksong23 and the other Recitations and Monologues. In 1985 he published "Faith and Fate in Sea Disaster Ballads of Newfoundland Fishermen."4 In 1991 he published "A Report on Continuing Research into 'Treason Songs': A Private "Song: Songs from the Repertoire of James Patrick Kelly." The Livyere 1:2 (1981), 12-17. With William C. Butt: "Song: Songs from the Repertoire of Tom King." The Livyere 1:1 (Summer 1981), 14-17. With Ellen McDonald: "Song: Songs from the Repertoire of Leander Roberts." The Livyere 1:2/4 (Winter-Spring 1982), 14-19. With Peter Narváez and Wilfred Wareham: "Four Songs from the Repertory of Dorman Ralph." The Livyere 2:1 (August-October 1982), 14-20. With Aidan O'Hara: "Song: Songs from the Repertoire of Carrie Brennan." The Livyere [2:1] (June 1983), 6-13. Folk Literature series, no. 4 (St. John's: Breakwater, 1983). Folk Literature series, no. 5 (St. John's: Breakwater, [1983]). In Roger D. Abrahams, et.al., eds., By Land and By Sea: Studies in the Folklore of Work and Leisure Honoring Horace P. Beck on His Sixty-Fifth Birthday (Hatboro: Legacy Books), 1985, pp. 84-94. K. S. Goldstein Inventory - 1 Newfoundland Folksong Tradition."5 Goldstein recorded his tapes on full- and half-track, quarter-inch audio tape on a Nagra, and later on a variety of cassettes machines, notably a Sony stereo TC5 and a Sony monaural TCM5000. MUNFLA holds cassette copies of all the tapes in the collection while the cassette and open-reel originals are in the Goldstein private collection in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Most of MUNFLA's copies were made by Goldstein himself at MUNFLA soon after collection. The finding aid is divided into four sections: - a description of the Goldstein holdings at MUNFLA organized by accession number; - a tape number concordance of the collector’s numbers and the MUNFLA shelflist numbers; - a song title index, alphabetically arranged, including MUNFLA tape shelflist numbers; and, - a performer index including MUNFLA tape shelflist numbers. Almost entirely, the index of songs is based on titles given by Goldstein himself when he prepared tables of contents for each of his tapes.
