Tharp 2020 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT Thorough examination of the existing research and the content of ballad and folk song collections reveals a lack of information regarding the methods by which folk musicians learn the music they perform. The centuries-old practice of folk song and ballad performance is well- documented. Many Child ballads and other folk songs have been passed down through the generations. Oral tradition is the principal method of transmission in Ozark folk music. The variants this method produces are considered evidence of authenticity. Although alteration is a distinguishing characteristic of songs passed down in the oral tradition, many ballad variants have persisted in the folk record for great lengths of time without being altered beyond recognition. -

Julie Kim and Oneka LaBennett Senior Thesis 2 Abstract My thesis presents a literary and historical examination of the genre of songs known as “Murdered Girl ballads” in the canon of 19th century Southern Appalachian folk music. The Murdered Girl ballad, which tells the story of a young woman murdered by her male lover, became an archetypal narrative in Appalachian folklore in the 1800’s. In my research I examine some of the many Appalachian Murdered Girl ballads and the mountain society they sprang from, drawing connections between the lyrics of the ballads and three specific aspects of Appalachian mountain life: violence, gender roles, and religion. -

Goldstein (1927-1995) housed at the Memorial University of Newfoundland Folklore and Language Archive (MUNFLA). Kenneth Goldstein, a distinguished American folklore scholar and theorist, spent two years (1976-78) as the head of the Department of Folklore at the Memorial University of Newfoundland. From that time until his death on 11 November 1995 he was a Research Associate at Memorial. In this capacity and with several local collectors, from 1978 until 1990, he amassed a collection of folksongs from various parts of Newfoundland and Labrador. His Newfoundland collections came from St. John’s, the Southern Shore, St. Mary’s Bay, Placentia Bay, the Burin Peninsula, Conception Bay, Trinity Bay, Bonavista Bay, White Bay, Fogo Island, the Great Northern Peninsula and the Codroy Region. He also recorded songs in Central Labrador and the southern coast of Labrador. About 3400 songs were collected by Goldstein from 243 performers in the province. The Goldstein materials at MUNFLA comprise 208 tapes, organized into twenty-three collections. Each tape is uniquely identified by its own shelflist number (prefixed by an F- or a C-, depending on whether it is a workcopy), and each collection by its accession number. -

Baker 2 Wendy Baker Final Project April 2014 Curious Tales and Captivating Voices: The Ballad Tradition of the Southern Appalachians On a cold night in the fall of 2012, a group assembled at the Friedle building on Duke University's campus for a gallery opening. The exhibit featured the photographs of Duke students coupled with middle school students from Madison County, North Carolina. This rural county in the mountains of western North Carolina boasts steep hills, remote mountain communities and a strong heritage of traditional music. As part of the event's entertainment, Madison County ballad singers Debbie Chandler, Denise Norton O'Sullivan and Joe Penland sang. We informally gathered around, some of us sitting on the floor and others standing in small groups. The singers' unaccompanied voices, both raw and strong, delivered a profound experience for the crowd. Joe Penland sang an excruciating immigrant's lament called “Pretty Saro,” about the experience of traveling to a strange land and missing a loved one, knowing you will never see her again. Debbie Chandler shocked and saddened us with her rendition of “Young Emily,” about a woman whose father kills her lover in order to steal his gold. Denise Norton O'Sullivan expertly delivered a poignant song about love called “Black is the Color.” The women told stories about learning the songs before they could read and about the strong connection they felt with their “Granny Dell” (Dellie Chandler Norton) who taught them the family tradition. These songs overflowed with emotion but were delivered without an overtly maudlin Baker 3 tone. -

Jared Calvert, 7/25/2017 South Red Bird Integrated Resource Management Area Landscape Assessment Summary Since 2004, when The Land and Resource Management Plan for the Daniel Boone National Forest (Forest Plan) was approved, the Daniel Boone National Forest has implemented the Integrated Resource Management Strategy (IRMS), a systematic process for determining existing resource conditions, and developing projects on the landscape level with the aim to bring the area closer to the desired future condition (DFC) described in the Forest Plan. The South Red Bird Integrated Resource Management Area (IRMA) is such a landscape-level project area, delineated by the South Red Bird IRMA Boundary. This boundary was selected because it contains a combination of smaller watersheds that are well defined and provide a sense of place within the larger Redbird River Watershed. A combination of small sub-watersheds or sixth level Hydrologic Unit Codes (HUCs) was used as the area for analysis. The South Red Bird IRMA is composed of four sixth level HUCs that make up approximately 56,000 acres, of which 32,300 acres are National Forest System (NFS) lands, within the Red Bird River Watershed in Clay, Leslie, and Bell Counties, Kentucky. The four sixth level HUCs are Upper Red Bird Creek, Phillips Fork, Bowen Creek, and Elisha Creek. The four sixth level HUCs make up approximately half of the acreage of the larger 5th level Redbird River Watershed. The entire Redbird River Watershed lies within the larger Upper Kentucky River Management Area. This Management Area lies within the Kentucky River basin and forms the proclamation boundary of the Redbird Ranger District. -

Winkler Murder ballads are songs that tell instances of violent and bloody killings. Whether the murderers in these songs are men killing their sweethearts or mothers killing their newborn infants, the characters in these ballads are very closely linked to one another.
