26 • Cessna Flyer / November 2020 dent. We spent three months contacting various brokers throughout the United States with some focus on the western states, simply due to the logistics in- volved with inspecting an airplane. Purchasing an aircraft is a major undertaking, involving arranging for a pre-purchase inspection with individu- als whom you have no experience and the frustrations of making offers and negotiating. We located a Cessna 182 in Okla- homa City that met our requirements regarding age, avionics, and engine time. The airplane had ADS-B In and Out, an autopilot, a Garmin 430, dual navcoms, a mid-time engine, an engine analyzer, and a well-maintained interior and paint, as it was always hangared. Negotiations began with the listing broker. A price was agreed upon and arrangements were made for a pre-purchase inspection. This is where the story changes.

Too good to be true We thought we had done our due diligence. We confirmed the ownership of the aircraft through the FAA data- base and arranged for a pre-purchase inspection. We sent a deposit for $15,000 pending the inspection. We received an email from the broker the day he was to have delivered the aircraft to the pre-purchase inspection A&P. The email explained that the aircraft had suffered a prop strike while taxiing out for the flight to the A&P. The broker then said he had another aircraft that met our specifi- cations. Again, we checked the FAA registry. The broker said that the owner wanted a larger deposit, so we added another $13,000 to the amount we had previously sent. We arranged a pre-purchase inspection. On the day the inspection was to have occurred, we got a call from the mechanic saying that the aircraft had not arrived. Our attempts to contact the broker were to no avail. Registered mail was returned unopened. Obviously, we did not get our deposit back. This dishonest broker had what appeared to be a well-designed and in- formational web site. We discussed our situation with an FBI agent and learned that the broker could be anyplace in the world, enticing prospective buyers with below-market asking prices for aircraft. Our mistake was that we did not

WHERE THERE’S SMOKE, THERE’S FIRE. Occasionally, these vapors’ trail will guide a fortunate soul to a lively backyard barbecue highlighted by the aro- mas of hamburgers and hotdogs filling the atmosphere, but other times the flames are more nefarious and negatively interrupt life. Recently, we have seen how fire has terrorized the United States West Coast, with dozens killed or injured, and mil- lions of acres burned. The number of hours flown by pilots each year varies, depending on weather and other factors, but a “standard” detection flight requires flying low and slow for about four to five hours at a time. While this type of scenic flight across pictur- esque Arkansas landscape sounds fun, the pilot’s head must always be on a swivel for other traffic, obstructions, and (of course) fires. While they typ- ically fly along a predetermined route (the map at right shows them outlined in gray), the pilot can de- viate at any time if they see smoke in the distance, or have suspicion it may be found elsewhere. Our left-turn-heavy flight was over after a couple more circles around the site, but a real-life mission would not end here. Typically, the de- tection plane would continue circling the scene long enough to determine its status and relay to dispatch any additional information of interest if needed.

I’ve recently reached the ripe old age of 72. That’s really hard to write. I’ve found myself spend- ing a great deal of time reminiscing; reliving in my mind favorite memories of days gone by. Some of them are of days, many years ago, dirt biking in the hills of Hollister, California, with my son, Glynn Junior, or four-wheeling the Rubicon Trail with my son, Bryan. My bride and I spent many hours and covered hundreds of miles exploring the Big Sur Coast and the California countryside. But…my favorite memories always include flying.

Though marked as private on the FAA sectional chart, the airport at Monument Valley is open to visiting pilots with prior permission. Exploring by air One flying trip comes easily to mind because it was my first long cross-country adventure. A 1947 Luscombe had found a new owner —me— and I was eager to explore new places. As luck would have it, there was a special fly-in just for Luscombes, taking place in Oregon. My son Bryan was about 14 years old when I asked him if he would like to join me for the trip. I’m not sure if his reason for going along was the excitement about the flying trip, or just to get out of school for a few days, but he said yes! that were little more than a clearing next to a creek. November 2020 / Cessna Flyer • 61 AIRFORMS RELEASES CARAVAN CATALOG FOR REPLACEMENT PARTS ANCHORAGE, Alaska, Sept. 21, 2020— Cessna Caravans are logging a tremen- dous number of hours in commercial operations, hauling people and parts to locations all over the globe. Unfortunate- ly, high times lead to worn out parts or deferred maintenance due to the high cost or scarcity of replacement parts. Consequently, Airforms has developed enough PMAs and STCs for standard and upgraded Caravan components to warrant a 20-page catalog that is avail- able in hard copy or online format (that can be printed out). Door hinges are one of the early items needing replacement on a Cessna 208/208B. Airforms offers a standard replacement and has developed an upgraded version that features bushings that are much less expensive to replace than the entire hinge. When the torque link bushings and the upper and lower attachment points in the nosegear assembly become worn, the nosewheel usually develops a shimmy. Airforms manufactures oversize pins and bolts for use in conjunction with their STC to address the problem. Specialty reamers were created to re-size bushings and attachment points for accommodat- ing new, oversize pins/bolts. The nosege- ar can be brought back to airworthy condition with the STC. Pins and bolts are manufactured to standard size, as well as 0.010, 0.020, and 0.030 oversizes.

62 • Cessna Flyer / November 2020 Airforms has developed enough Cessna Caravan replacement parts and part upgrades to merit a 20-page free catalog.

The company also has developed a high strength, all-aluminum replace- ment for upper, middle, and lower pas- senger airstair steps. One Part No. as- sembly is certified to replace any of the three steps. This summer, they received FAA PMA approval for manufacturing the components of the complete Crew Ladder Assemblies. The company has several other new PMAs that are pend- ing FAA approval (expected this Fall). Currently, Airforms holds over 1,000 PMAs, including replacement baffle kits for 60 different models of Cessna, Piper, Beechcraft, Mooney, and Grumman. Most replacement and upgraded parts available through Airforms are considerably less expensive than OEM parts. To view the parts offered by Airforms, visit airforms.biz.
