Igor Mitoraj and Magdalena Abakanowicz are consid- ered ambassadors of Polish sculpture, with their monumental works arousing worldwide admi- ration. Roman Opałka’s and Wilhelm Sasnal’s paintings are highly sought after by art collec- tors. ▶ ▶ Poland has been home to many illustrious personalities, whose work changed the face of the world. Some were scientists, like Nicolaus Coperni- cus or Marie Skłodowska-Curie. Others shaped our reality in different ways, for example, the founders of Hollywood, Samuel Goldwyn and the Warner brothers. -

KULTURA DO POZNANIA KULTURA DO TWORZENIA CULTURE TO MEET CULTURE TO CREATE 40 lat Instytutu Kulturoznawstwa UAM 1976 2 Początki Beginnings 3 4 Instytut Kulturoznawstwa czterdziestolatkiem Jacek Sójka Typowo jubileuszowe pytanie brzmi zazwyczaj, jak to się wszystko zaczęło, jakie były począt- ki, kto na to wpadł. W istocie zawsze można wskazać na jednostkę lub grupę osób, od których wychodzi taki twórczy impuls. Tak naprawdę mieliśmy do czynienia z pionierską pracą założy- cieli pierwszych instytutów i katedr kulturoznawstwa we Wrocławiu, Poznaniu i Łodzi. Każda historia jest jednak inna, specyficzna, zależna od środowiska, które ów impuls tworzy. Jak wia- domo, nie wszystko można odnaleźć w archiwach. Trzeba zatem pytać, rozmawiać, zachęcać do zwierzeń, zwłaszcza tych, którzy najbardziej byli wówczas aktywni. Niestety nie ma wśród nas osób, które Instytut Kulturoznawstwa UAM zakładały: dr. Krzysztofa Kostyrki, prof. Wale- riana Sobisiaka, prof. Jerzego Kmity. Odeszli także profesorowie Zbigniew Gierszewski, Urszula Kaczmarek i Krystyna Zamiara, a ostatnio także dr Jacek Chłopocki. Wprawdzie w przeszłości wielokrotnie wypowiadali się na temat powstania Instytutu, ale okazuje się, że wraz z każdym kolejnym jubileuszem poznańskiego kulturoznawstwa nie tylko powracają te same pytania, ale też pojawiają się nowe. O początkach Instytutu oraz studiów kulturoznawczych na Uniwersytecie im. Adama Mickie- wicza w Poznaniu dyskutujemy także w tej książce – celowo bardzo nieoficjalnie, bez jubileuszo- wego zadęcia. Widać jednak wyraźnie, że wciąż nie wiemy wszystkiego i być może nigdy nie będziemy wiedzieć. 10 lat temu, przy okazji jubileuszu 30-lecia, udzielałem wywiadu dla „Prze- glądu Wielkopolskiego”. Redaktor Marek Zaradniak pytał oczywiście o początki, m.in. o to, dla- czego w 1976 roku usytuowano Instytut na Wydziale Historycznym, chociaż istniał już Wydział Nauk Społecznych, a spora część kadry Instytutu, z profesorem Jerzym Kmitą włącznie, zwią- zana była właśnie z tym wydziałem. -

In the hands of Polish sculptor, Magdalena Abakanowicz, sisal, burlap, bronze, and wood are transformed into metaphors simultaneously expressing the fragility and strength of humans and the natural world. Deeply personal, drawing upon her experience of the destruction of Poland during World War II, Abakanowicz's work reaches cross-cultural audiences through her ability to turn personal insight into universal expression. The artist accomplishes this difficult task using a visual language of metaphor. Through metaphor, Abakanowicz discusses aspects of humanity that are less tangible by equating them to something more concrete. Careful use of materials allows the metaphors to resonate, even with people who did not experience devastating effects of World War II.
