One way to mitigate these problems is to expand green spaces. Roofs, as the last frontier, could be made full use of. Green roofs have become a hot topic in recent years. In this study, I investigated the ability of green roofs to support urban biodiversity by conducting a literature review, and then I sought the criteria for biodiversity roofs under Finnish conditions by interviewing ecologists. My research questions in this study were 1) What kinds of habitats could be “ideal ecosystems” to be mimicked on biodiversity roofs in Finland; 2) which plant species could exist on roofs and whether they contribute to biodiversity; 3) what kinds of substrates support the biodiversity on roofs; 4) whether green roofs support faunal diversity and what faunal taxa could exist on roofs; 5) if and how roof structural characteristics influence roof biodiversity; 6) what kinds of management are practiced on biodiversity roofs; 7) what are people’s attitudes towards or perceptions of biodiversity roofs in general. -

This information represents what was known at the end of the 1994 field season. These maps may not represent the most recent information on distribution and range for these taxa but it does illustrate geographic distribution across the assessment area. For many of these species, this is the first time information has been compiled on this scale. For the continued viability of many of these taxa, it is imperative that we begin to manage for them across their range and across administrative boundaries. Of the 173 taxa analyzed, there are maps for 153 taxa. For those taxa that were not tracked by heritage programs, we were not able to generate range maps. Based on the presence of adaxially gibbous carpels and follicles, this taxon belongs to sect. Sedum S.H. Fu. The new species superficially resembles S. subtile Miquel and S. bulbiferum Makino but differs from these two taxa in its development of a basal leaf rosette during florescence. The nrDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences also support the claim that this plant is a new species in the Sedum genus. The Horticulture Journal Preview e Japanese Society for doi: 10.2503/hortj.OKD-087 JSHS Horticultural Science http://www.jshs.jp/ Estimation of Phylogeny of Nineteen Sedoideae Species Cultivated in Korea Inferred from Chloroplast DNA Analysis Mi Sang Lim and Sun Hee Choi* Department of Horticulture, Biotechnology and Landscape Architecture, Seoul Women’s University, Seoul 01797, Korea The genetic diversity and relationships among plants belonging to the subfamily Sedoideae (Crassulaceae), some of which are indigenous to Korea or introduced from other countries, were determined using chloroplast (cp) nucleotide sequence analysis. To analyze genetic diversity and variation among 19 plants including species belonging to Sedum, Hylotelephium, and Phedimus, the tRNA-Leucine gene (trnL [UAA]) and adjoining spacer in chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) were sequenced and compared across species. Species were divided into two main groups based on the cpDNA sequence comparison. The generated phylogeny indicated that many native Sedum species had diverged from S. album. Members of the Phedimus and Hylotelephium species, and several Sedum species analyzed here, clustered distinctively in different groups. Using cpDNA sequence analysis, we successfully discriminated Sedoideae plants cultivated in Korea from each other, even at the intraspecific level, and the results were reflective of the morphological and biogeographical characteristics. These findings could be useful for classifying samples for proper naming, choosing breeding materials for new cultivars, or identifying species for conservation of horticultural crop resources. Thesis Phytochemical investigation of two Crassulaceae species: Rhodiola rosea L., the New "Herbal Stress Buster", and Sedum dasyphyllum L. VAN DIERMEN, Daphné Abstract Rhodiola rosea L. (Crassulaceae), the most investigated species of the genus Rhodiola, grows at elevated altitudes in the Arctic and in mountainous regions throughout Europe and Asia, where it is also knows as "Golden root" or "Arctic root". The roots have been used for centuries in traditional medicine to enhance physical and mental performance, improve resistance to high altitude sickness and to treat fatigue, psychological stress and depression. The present work aims at clarifying the pharmacological effects of R. rosea and identifying the active metabolites. The plant was tested on three targets : monoamine oxidase, acetylcholinesterase and oxidative stress. As the roots of R. rosea exhibited interesting activities against the three targets, a phytochemical investigation was undertaken on the plant. An agronomical study was also realised on R. rosea. Another part of this work consisted in studying different Crassulaceae species in order to discover new potential herbal stress buster. Six new flavonols were isolated from Sedum dasyphyllum L.
