After planted with HE, soil pH in the rhizosphere Accepted 29 June 2011 reduced by 0.5–0.6 units which is consistent with the increase of DOM. The hydrophilic fractions (51%) Available online 5 July 2011 in DOM from the rhizosphere of HE (HE-DOM) was much greater than NHE-DOM (35%). In the presence of HE-DOM, Zn and Cd sorption capacity decreased markedly in the following order: calcareous clay Keywords: loam > neutral clay loam > acidic silty clay. The sorption isotherms could be well described by the Fre- Dissolved organic matter 2 Cadmium undlich equation (R > 0.95), and the partition coefficient (K) in the presence of HE-DOM was decreased by 30.7–68.8% for Zn and 20.3–59.2% for Cd, as compared to NHE-DOM.

One way to mitigate these problems is to expand green spaces. Roofs, as the last frontier, could be made full use of. Green roofs have become a hot topic in recent years. In this study, I investigated the ability of green roofs to support urban biodiversity by conducting a literature review, and then I sought the criteria for biodiversity roofs under Finnish conditions by interviewing ecologists. My research questions in this study were 1) What kinds of habitats could be “ideal ecosystems” to be mimicked on biodiversity roofs in Finland; 2) which plant species could exist on roofs and whether they contribute to biodiversity; 3) what kinds of substrates support the biodiversity on roofs; 4) whether green roofs support faunal diversity and what faunal taxa could exist on roofs; 5) if and how roof structural characteristics influence roof biodiversity; 6) what kinds of management are practiced on biodiversity roofs; 7) what are people’s attitudes towards or perceptions of biodiversity roofs in general.

Organic acid has been suggested to be involved in toxic metallic element tolerance, translocation, and accumulation in plants. The impact of exogenous organic acids on cadmium (Cd) uptake and translocation in the zinc (Zn)/Cd co-hyperaccumulator Sedum alfredii was investigated in the present study. By the addition of organic acids, short-term (2 h) root uptake of 109Cd increased significantly, and higher 109Cd contents in roots and shoots were noted 24 h after uptake, when compared to controls. About 85% of the 109Cd taken up was distributed to the shoots in plants with citric acid (CA) treatments, as compared with 75% within controls. No such effect was observed for tartaric acid (TA).

Spatial imaging of cadmium (Cd) in the hyperaccumulator Sedum alfredii was investigated in vivo by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and x-ray microfluorescence imaging. Preferential Cd accumulation in the pith and cortex was observed in stems of the Cd hyperaccumulating ecotype (HE), whereas Cd was restricted to the vascular bundles in its 2 contrasting nonhyperaccumulating ecotype. Cd concentrations of up to 15,000 mgg 1 were measured in the pith cells, which was many fold higher than the concentrations in the stem epidermis and vascular bundles in the HE plants. In the leaves of the HE, Cd was mainly localized to the mesophyll and vascular cells rather than the epidermis. The distribution pattern of Cd in both stems and leaves of the HE was very similar to calcium but not zinc, irrespective of Cd exposure levels.

  • Empirical and Numerical Approaches to Predicting the Thermal Performance of Green Roofs
Empirical and numerical approaches to predicting the thermal performance of green roofs By Luke Gebert A thesis submitted to Saint Mary’s University, Halifax, Nova Scotia in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Applied Science © Luke Gebert, 2015 Halifax, Nova Scotia Approved: Dr. Jeremy Lundholm Supervisor Approved: Dr. Denis O'Carroll Supervisory Committee Approved: Dr. Mirwais Qaderi Supervisory Committee Approved: Dr. Andrew Coutts External Examiner Date: 27th October, 2015 Abstract Empirical and numerical approaches to predicting the thermal performance of green roofs Luke Gebert Green roofs are increasingly recognised as a sustainable option for reducing building energy demand. However, given the large investment required for their construction, accurate modelling methods are needed to predict their economic benefits for building owners and maximize their effectiveness. The representation of vegetation in the green roof energy balance model literature is reviewed to identify their limitations. It is concluded that an overemphasis on single source models, minimal validation periods and limited input data is likely burdening the robustness and applicability of these models. Using data collected in Calgary, Halifax and London, this study then aims to develop empirical models to offer another approach for predicting the thermal performance of green roofs. Significant multiple linear regression models highlight the importance of net radiation, air-to-surface temperature difference and humidity in predicting the substrate heat flux, with the green roof in the driest climate; Calgary, being the most effective. Date: 27th October, 2015 Acknowledgements I am very thankful to my supervisor Dr. Jeremy Lundholm who always provided me with excellent recommendations and guidance during my Master’s Degree.

A FLORISTIC SURVEY ON THE GOZITAN ISLETS OF TAĊ-ĊAWL AND TAL-ĦALFA IN THE MALTESE ARCHIPELAGO Stephen Mifsud Citation: Mifsud, S. (2011).A FLORISTIC SURVEY ON THE GOZITAN ISLETS OF TAC-CAWL AND TAL-HALFA IN THE MALTESE ISLANDS". MaltaWildPlants.com Online Publications; Ref: MWPOP-001. URL: http://www.MaltaWildPlants.com/publ/index.php#W01 Abstract A floristic survey was carried out on the islets of Tal-Ħalfa and Taċ-Ċawl, both situated just off the Southern coast of Gozo. The aim was to confirm or otherwise results of a recent study (Sciberras & Sciberras, 2010) which concluded that a number of species had become extinct or doubtful when compared to an earlier work (Cassar and Lanfranco, 2000). The present work confirms the occurrence of most of the species found by Cassar and Lanfranco and in addition reports on the discovery of a significant number of new records of legally protected or rare vascular plants. Taxonomical notes concerning a few ambiguous plants which were discovered are discussed. Keywords Flora, Taċ-Ċawl, Tal-Ħalfa, Islets, Maltese Islands 1: Introduction After reading an article (Sciberras & Sciberras, 2010) regarding surveys carried out on the islets around the Maltese islands, the author decided to visit and survey the flora of the islets of Taċ-Ċawl and Tal-Ħalfa. The reason being that of a substantial number of discrepancies between this article and an earlier survey (Cassar and Lanfranco, 2000). It was surprising to read that after visiting each site at least “four times each season from the period 1998-2010” the authors had only found 24 and 21 species for Taċ-Ċawl and Tal-Ħalfa Rocks respectively.

  • Literature Cited
Literature Cited Robert W. Kiger, Editor This is a consolidated list of all works cited in volume 8, whether as selected references, in text, or in nomenclatural contexts. In citations of articles, both here and in the taxonomic treat- ments, and also in nomenclatural citations, the titles of serials are rendered in the forms recom- mended in G. D. R. Bridson and E. R. Smith (1991). When those forms are abbreviated, as most are, cross references to the corresponding full serial titles are interpolated here alphabetically by abbreviated form. In nomenclatural citations (only), book titles are rendered in the abbreviated forms recommended in F. A. Stafleu and R. S. Cowan (1976–1988) and F. A. Stafleu et al. (1992– 2009). Here, those abbreviated forms are indicated parenthetically following the full citations of the corresponding works, and cross references to the full citations are interpolated in the list alpha- betically by abbreviated form. Two or more works published in the same year by the same author or group of coauthors will be distinguished uniquely and consistently throughout all volumes of Flora of North America by lower-case letters (b, c, d, ...) suffixed to the date for the second and subsequent works in the set. The suffixes are assigned in order of editorial encounter and do not reflect chronological sequence of publication. The first work by any particular author or group from any given year carries the implicit date suffix “a”; thus, the sequence of explicit suffixes begins with “b”. There may be citations in this list that have dates suffixed “b” but that are not preceded by citations of “[a]” works for the same year, or that have dates suffixed “c,” “d,” or “e” but that are not preceded by citations of “[a],” “b,” “c,” and/or “d” works for that year.

Throughout my life, lack of space in the greenhouse has prompted me to place succulents outdoors in summertime for as long as possible. I have always been envious of those living in areas mild enough to make possible the permanent planting of succulents outdoors. The purpose of this article is to share quarter of a century's experience of growing succulents outdoors in the equivalent of Zone 6 and knowing well that many of the species I am to discuss are hardy to Zone 3. By contrast, they are less likely to be successful in places as warm as Zone 8, but enthusiasts in these locales probably have a plethora of succulents in the landscape already. The name Phedimus RAFINESQUE may be new to many readers or one with which they are not very familiar, but I am sure most readers will have encountered at least one Phedimus species, perhaps unnamed or bearing a Sedum tag. Phedimus are Old World species comprising one Mediterranean purple-flowered annual, several purple- or white-flowering species from the Caucuses, and a handful of yellow-flowered species from across cold and temperate Asia.

( 1984): Gene ric rl ivision of sub f. Sedoidene in Europe and tl1c adjacent regions. - Prcslia, Praha, 56 : 29 - 45. Europe and the a djaeent parts of North Africa and \Vest Asia contain ea. 120 sp ecies of s u bf. Sedoidene. The genus Sedum L. is especially hct.Progeneous and is composed of several natural groups whose cvaluat, ion until now has been unsatisfactory. Some groups arc closely allied to othe r recently distinguis hed gflmwa, and it is necessary to treat them as separate genera . Therefore genera A izopsis GRULTCH, Asterosedum GRUL!CH, P etrosedum GrmLLCH and Oreosedum GRULICH arc- rl escribed. Regional Museum, 69215 i\1ikulov, Czechoslovakia The taxonomic classification of succulents is difficult, because the varia bility of most species is fairly large and the phenomenon of succulence often conditions convergencies. Several species (including many cultivars) are used in horticulture, which tends to co mplicate their taxonomy. All species of the family Orassulaceae are of succulent habit. The generic division of this family is most unclear, sinee extreme types have been classed as monotypic genera, e.g. Pagella ScHONL. Further taxa are natural, e.g. subf. Sempervivoideae, Hylotelephium 0HBA, Umbilicus DC. Many species, however, remain in two polymorphic genera Crassula L. and Sedum L. , each with numerous species, and whose differentiation from the other genera is not clear. Most of the "intermediate" types create difficulties, especially when using classic morphological methods based on their succulent parts.
