Here we found our first flowers, the extremely common Autumn Squill Prospero autumnale, the striped, hooded spathes of Friar’s Cowl Arisarum vulgare, and a number of Crocus mazziaricus. A few butterflies included Long-tailed Blue, Lang’s Short-tailed Blue, Eastern Bath White, Mallow Skipper and a Pigmy Skipper. We continued along the newly-completed coast road, before turning inland and climbing steeply into the mountains. We arrived in Kalavrita around 6pm and after settling in to our hotel, we enjoyed a delicious meal of home-cooked food at a nearby taverna. Day 2 Thursday 25th October We awoke to a sunny day with cloud over the mountains. Above Kalavrita, we explored an area of Kermes Oak scrub and open pasture, where we found more white Crocus mazziaricus and Crocus melantherus. Crocus melantherus, as its name suggests can be distinguished from other autumn-flowering species by its black anthers and purple feathering on the outer tepals. Cyclamen hederifolium was common under the shade of the trees. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Lamiaceae is the third largest family based on the taxon number and fourth largest family based on the species number in Turkey. The family has 48 genera and 782 taxa (603 species, 179 subspecies and varieties), 346 taxa (271 species, 75 subspecies and varieties) of which are endemic (ca. 44%) (data updated 1th February 2017) in the country. There are also 23 hybrid species, 19 of which are endemic (82%). The results proven that Turkey is one of the centers of diversity for Lamiaceae in the Old World. In addition, Turkey has about 10% of all Lamiaceae members in the World. The largest five genera in the country based on the taxon number are Stachys (118 taxa), Salvia (107 taxa), Sideritis (54 taxa), Phlomis (53 taxa) and Teucrium (49 taxa). According to taxon number, five genera with the highest endemism ratio are Dorystaechas (1 taxon, 100%), Lophantus (1 taxon, 100%), Sideritis (54 taxa, 74%), Drymosiphon (9 taxa, 67%), and Marrubium (27 taxa, 63%). There are two monotypic genera in Turkey as Dorystaechas and Pentapleura. Turkey sits on the junction of three phytogeographic regions with highly diverse climate and the other ecologic features. Phytogeographic distribution of Turkish Lamiaceae taxa are 293 taxa in the Mediterranean (37.4%), 267 taxa in the Irano-Turanian (36.7%), 90 taxa in the Euro-Siberian (Circumboreal) phytogeographic region, and 112 taxa in Unknown or Multiregional (14.3%) phytogeographical elements. -

Medit. 22: 233-244 doi: 10.7320/FlMedit22.233 Version of Record published online on 28 December 2012 Hans Walter Lack & Thomas Raus Hildemar Scholz (1928 – 2012) Hildemar Scholz, aged 84, passed away on 5 June 2012 as a consequence of a bad fall he had suffered at home a few weeks earlier. He was a world authority on grasses, the adventive flora of Europe, and rust fungi from central Europe. From 1964 until his retire- ment in 1993 he was a member of staff of the Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum Berlin-Dahlem, rising from scientific collaborator to one of the directors at this institution. Hildemar was a born plant-collector active all over Europe, in North and West Africa with a special interest in grasses and the rust fungi parasitizing them. Born on 27 May 1928 in Berlin into a family of protestant clergymen Hildemar Scholz remained both in language and manners very much a Berliner, in the true and best sense of the word, and never ever considered leaving his home town, even during the many diffi- cult years this city encountered in the last century. Having belatedly finished his school training because of the Second World War in 1947, he tried to get enrolled at Berlin University, subsequently renamed Humboldt University, in the Soviet sector of the city, but was rejected – probably because his father was a clergyman. Hildemar had more success at the newly founded Free University in the American sector of Berlin, where he got admit- ted in 1949 and chose biology as his subject.
