The realisation of traditional local dialectal features in the address names of two Western Norwegian municipalities Abstract: Norway is often seen as a dialect paradise: it is acceptable to use dialects in both private and public contexts. Does this high degree of dialect diversity and tolerance also apply to Norwegian place-names? In order to shed light on this question, I will examine address names in two former municipalities in Hardanger, a traditional Western Norwegian district, as for the degree of the visibility of a selection of the traditional local dialectal features. Features retained in the names will be evaluated in terms of to what extent they are permitted by the current place-name regulations, so as to see whether dialect diversity and tolerance apply to Norwegian place-names. The valley in which the Fjserlands Fjord lies, together with valleys at its head, Boiumdal and Suphelledal, belong accord ingly to the class Fjord-valleys. During our Excursion of 191 I (see References, 19 I 2, pp. 47-51) we spent three nights at Mundal (see the Map, Fig. 3), and visited the Boium Valley with its glacier, and the Suphelle Valley, with the first of the two glaciers which flow into it (No.3 on the Map, Fig. 3). Some of our party also mounted to the top of the Frudalsbrre, a small snow-field on the mountains to the east of the fjord.

The tours use public transport, i.e. regular buses, ferries and boats, but we have done the planning for you so that you can concentrate on enjoying your trip. You travel on your own - there is no guide or tour leader. On most of our tours you must change several times between different buses/ferries/boats, and it is up to you to make sure you catch your connections – truly travelling like a local! (The tours are set up so that the buses, ferries and boats connect.) Visit the beautiful village of Ulvik Voss - Ulvik - Granvin - Voss Travel to Ulvik, a village at the corner of the Hardangerfjord, situated between steep and snowclad mountains. Ulvik is reachable within an hour from Voss, and you will have plenty of time to explore. In Ulvik you will find the only fruit- and ciderroute in Norway, with three independent farmers professionally producing apple cider and other tasty farmyard produce. Take a lyrical stroll in the Olav H. Hauge Centre or just enjoy the calmness of the village. During summer and autumn there are several options for hiking in the surrounding mountains. You can also do some exploring on a bike or from a kayak on the fjord. Visit the Tourist Information for additional recommendations. While you are there, remember to browse at the locally produced products which are available for purchase. 01 May - 30 September: the bus to Ulvik will pass Skjervsfossen waterfall, and goes via Espelandsdalen valley.
