Welcome to the Tunnels and ITS Symposium 2013 After the great success in 2011, ITS Norway and the Norwegian Public Roads Administration welcomes you to the second international symposium on Tunnels and ITS in Bergen.

The second symposium continues with focus on development and The symposium will also address the directives and pre-procure- deployment of intelligent transport systems for both high and low ment process. How can this vital procurement process become traffic volume tunnels. easier, less bureaucratic and serve the purpose better?

TUNNELS AND ITS – TRAFFIC AND INCIDENT MANAGEMENT By attending this symposium you will be able to learn more about Around the world, more and more tunnels are built to make the this, and to have your say in the on-going discussion to make tun- transport system safer, more efficient and to reduce environmen- nels easier and less costly to operate. tal impact brought on by traffic. At the same time the authorities implement new and tougher regulation to enhance tunnel safety. Public Roads Administration with ITS Norway/Tekna as secretariat for the paper selection. Extensive use of ITS is the natural way to meet these challenges. However, the authorities and tunnels owners will require a more thought-through strategic thinking on how to implement ITS in the future. Deployment of ITS should be connected and con- ceptual, and not restrained by IPR, private format and locked-in standards. Through a conceptual approach, based on common re- quirements for sensors and communication, it is possible to reduce cost and complexity.

This year’s symposium will focus on traffic and incident manage- ment in tunnels in order to make a more efficient and streamlined operation. This will in turn enhance the traffic flow and reduce operational cost. How do we go about achieving this as profes- sionals? How do we plan, design and use standards to meet these demands? What kind of equipment, sensors and communication devices do we implement in order to be in line with new require- Vallavik Tunnel | Photo: Norwegian Public Roads Administration ments?
