Printed in Sweden by ESSELTE AB STOCKHOLM Foreword Forest Economy in the U.S.S.R. is a special study of the forestry sector of the Soviet economy. As such it makes a further contribution to the studies undertaken in recent years to elucidate the means and ends in Soviet planning; also it attempts to assess the competitive potentialities of the U.S.S.R. in international trade. Soviet studies now command a very great interest and are being undertaken at some twenty universities and research institutes mainly in the United States, the United Kingdoin and the German Federal Republic. However, it would seem that the study of the development of the forestry sector has riot received the detailed attention given to other fields. In any case, there have not been any analytical studies published to date elucidating fully the connection between forestry and the forest industries and the integration of both in the economy as a whole. Studies of specific sections have appeared from time to time, but I have no knowledge of any previous study which gives a complete picture of the Soviet forest economy and which could faci- litate the marketing policies of the western world, being undertaken at any university or college. -

Freeze, Advisor In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in History by Allison Brown May 2016 Copyright by Allison Brown © 2016 ABSTRACT Soviet Forest Management and Urban Green Spaces in the Post-Stalinist Press, 1953-1982 A thesis presented to the Department of History Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Brandeis University Waltham, Massachusetts By Allison Brown In the decades following Joseph Stalin’s death in 1953, the Soviet government largely continued his policies of accelerated industrialization. This drive for industrial growth had a profound impact on Soviet forests and the industry that was responsible for their management. While certain sectors of the economy, such as the military and space programs, enjoyed significant attention and monetary contributions from the government in the latter half of the twentieth century, the forestry industry was less fortunate. The Khrushchev and Brezhnev eras (1953-82) were plagued by poor communications between state officials and the management structure of the forestry sector, a lack of investment to train specialists and to develop new technologies and techniques, little commitment to waste reduction and more efficient use of resources, and an inability to break “old habits” that had beset that sector of the industry for decades. While the forestry industry struggled to modernize and reorganize, city planners faced challenges in meeting the demands of city-dwellers and state officials, who demanded the inclusion of urban green spaces and forest belts in both old and new cities. -

The development conditions and factors of fluvial processes are considered and the role of cryogenic processes in the increasing activity of water flows is emphasized. The interdecadal dynamic cycles of the erosion-accumulative processes are revealed. A quantitative assessment of soil loss from erosion on agricultural land in the forest-steppe basins was carried out. We made an assessment of the plane deformation of the upper course of the Lena river (Siberian platform) and Irkut (Baikal rift zone and the Irkutsk-Cheremkhovo plain) using cartographic sources of different times, aerial photographs, and satellite imagery. -

Abstract This paper is focused on the comparative analysis of the chemical composition of snow melt water and surface water in two areas holding aluminum production (Baikal region): both under operation (Shelekhov town) and under construction (Tayshet town). It appears that the levels of contamination of the studied environmental components (snow melt water, snow solid phase, river water) with Al and its satellite elements (F, Be, Li) in the towns hosting aluminum production are from 2 to 5 times higher than the regional background values. Prescribed Fire Experiments in Krasnoyarsk Region, Russia

ISSN 1029-0864 (web) Prescribed Fire Experiments in Krasnoyarsk Region, Russia In Russia understory burning and prescribed burning on logged areas are prohibited for use. All forest fires starting on forested areas and logged sites obligatory should be suppressed immediately. However, many scientists had been noted about positive effects of surface fires and offered different kind of their use in silviculture. Starting from 1996 experimental prescribed fires in slash fuels in Siberia have been conducted under the auspices of the Russian-American Central Siberian Sustainable Forest Management Project. High load of slash fuels is the main cause of logged areas high fire danger. Often wildfires start on logged areas and then move to surrounding forests. Mechanical removal of slash fuels practically impossible due to the labour-consuming character and the absence of suitable equipment. Removal of natural forest and slash fuels using broadcast burning on logged areas starting from 1996 by 2001 in area summed more than 900 ha in Krasnoyarsk Region (Central Siberia) allow to solve 3 main issues. First, logged area fire danger fully disappears during 2-3 years and it is very low during 5-10 years after prescribed burning. Second, prescribed burning creates conditions for natural and artificial regeneration. The last involves planting seedlings or sowing seeds. Third, prescribed fire exclude soil erosion inherent in mechanical treatment and strengthen fireweed growth favouring the development of coniferous seedlings. Along with fires starting from logged sites wildfires in forests damaged by pests represent big problems for foresters and forest fire fighters. -

Data have been obtained from groundwater (wells, boreholes and springs), rivers, lakes and discharges from abandoned mines and mine wastes. Of particular interest are the following observations: (i) The shallow groundwaters ofthe Tomsk region are typically dominated by relatively high concentrations of Ca++ and bicarbonate alkalinity, and slightly alkaline pH. The high concentrations may reflect high partial pressures of C02 in recharge water.
