I ÖZET ALMANYA’DAN NASYONAL SOSYALİZM DÖNEMİNDE (1933-1945) TÜRKİYE’YE GELEN YAHUDİLER Altunbaş, Ayşe Yüksek Lisans Tezi, Tarih Ana Bilim Dalı Danışman: Doç. Dr. Hilal Görgün September, 2020. 176 Pages When the National Socialist German Workers' Party came to power in Germany in 1933, there were important developments that had a negative impact on the lives of Jews living in Europe and especially in Germany. Among the Jews who were looking for a country where they could take refuge under a law passed by Hitler; hundreds of people, including academics, scientists, artists and politicians, have had to leave their home countries and emigrate to different countries. Since many of them were scientists, there was an enormous brain drain in Germany. The government of the Republic of Turkey has invited many of these scholars to Turkey by providing social and economic privileges. This study examined the situation of German scholars of Jewish origin who immigrated to Turkey from Germany between 1933 and 1945. The reasons for emigrating to Turkey, the migration process, the relations between Turkey and Germany, the Jews in the Republic of Turkey and the leaders of the educational reform in Turkey were discussed. • THE JEWISH HOLOCAUST and the ARMENIANS Türkkaya Ataöv
THE JEWISH HOLOCAUST AND THE ARMENIANS Türkkaya Ataöv One can discern, off and on, some effort on the part of some Armenian authors and their close supporters to associate the notorious Jewish Holocaust of the Nazi period (1933-45) with Armenian-Turkish relations during the First World War (1914-18). There are sweeping generalizations stating that unfortunately there had been "no Nuremberg"1 (Nürnberg) for the defeated Ottomans in 1918. There are even attempts to lump together Fascist Germany, the United States, Israel, South Africa, Britain, El Salvador, Guatemala and Kampuchea under the collective heading of "genocide".2 While the latter source makes an unqualified, one- sided and highly objectionable generalization on the Ottoman Empire in just two sentences in the whole book,3 another source draws parallels between the Armenians, Jews, Bangladeshis and the Hutu.4 There also exist, largely Armenian-inspired, outright comparisons of the Armenian and the Jewish cases.5 William Wordsworth, immortal English poet said in a poem: "Like–but oh, how different!" One may agree with Alexandre Dumas (fils): "All generalizations are dangerous-even this one." The danger of historic comparisons is obvious. All-inclusive assumptions quoted in the first paragraph are over-simplifications. They strike one as 'too liberal' refutations of veritable differences in terms of origins, accumulation, circumstances, and results. Concisely, in various phases of European history, dominant Christian groups living on that continent, who needed to 1 Peter Lanne, Armenia: The First Genocide of the XX Century, tr. The first incident involved recruiting more than one hundred Jewish scientists and skilled technical personnel from German-controlled Europe for the purpose of reforming outdated academia in Turkey.

  • Professional Ethics and the Denial of Armenian Genocide
Professional Ethics and the Denial of Armenian Genocide Roger W. Smith College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia Eric Markusen Southwest State University, Marshall, Minnesota Robert Jay Lifton The City University of New York This article examines Turkish efforts to deny the Armenian genocide of 1915-17. Specifically, it exposes an arrangement by which the government of Turkey has channeled funds into a supposedly objective research insti- tute in the United States, which in turn paid the salary of a historian who served that government in its campaign to discredit scholarship on the Armenian genocide. After a short review of the Armenian genocide and a range of Turkish denial efforts, three documents are reproduced in full. They include a letter that Robert Jay Lifton received from the Turkish Am- bassador to the United States, and two documents that were inadvertently included with the Lifton letter—a memorandum to the Turkish Ambassa- dor and a draft letter to Lifton for the Ambassador's signature. After a critical analysis of each document, we discuss the harmful ness of genocide denial and explore why intellectuals might engage in the denial of known genocides. The article concludes with reflections on the relationship be- tween scholars and truth. The will to truth is cowed by pressure of numerous kinds, reasons of state on the one hand, economic necessities on the other, and, not least, the pure careerism of intellectu- als who put their expertise in the service of power as a matter of course When govern- ments and professional elites find reward in the sophistries of might makes right, truth is bound to suffer.1 Terrence Des Pres It has been said that gentlemen do not read other gentlemen's mail.

  • They Helped Modernize Turkey's Medical Education and Practice
Gesnerus 65 (2008) 56–85 They Helped Modernize Turkey’s Medical Education and Practice: Refugees from Nazism 1933–1945* Arnold Reisman Summary This paper discusses a dimly lit and largely unknown bit of 20th century history. Starting in 1933, Turkey reformed its medical health care system using invitees fleeing the Nazis and for whom America was out of reach because of restrictive immigration laws and wide-spread anti-Semitic hiring bias at its universities. Among the invitees were several medical scholars who played a large role in westernizing the new Turkish republic’s medical practice and research as well as its school curricula. Keywords: Jewish doctors under Nazism; history of medicine in Turkey; medical education Introduction Starting in 1933, the Nazis’ plan to rid themselves of Jews beginning with intellectuals with Jewish roots or spouses became a windfall for Ataturk’s determination to modernize Turkey. A select group of Germans with a record of leading-edge contributions to their respective disciplines was invited with Reichstag’s backing to transform Turkey’s higher education and the new Turkish state’s entire infrastructure. This arrangement, occurring before the activation of death camps, served the Nazis’ aim of making their universities, professions, and their arts judenrein, cleansed of Jewish influence and free from intelligentsia opposed to fascism. Because the Turks needed the help, Germany could use it as an exploitable chit on issues of Turkey’s neutrality * This paper is based on Arnold Reisman, Turkey’s Modernization: Refugees from Nazism and Ataturk’s Vision, New Academia Publishers (Washington DC 2006). RUSSOPHOBIC NEUTRALITY: TURKISH DIPLOMACY, 1936-1945 A Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Georgetown University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History By Onur Isci, M.A. Washington, DC February 27, 2014 Copyright 2014 by Onur Isci All Rights Reserved ii RUSSOPHOBIC NEUTRALITY: TURKISH DIPLOMACY, 1936-1945 Onur Isci, M.A. Thesis Advisor: Mustafa Aksakal, Ph.D ABSTRACT This dissertation tells the story of Soviet-Turkish rivalry during the crucible of World War II. By 1939, Turkey began fast reverting to its old imperial attitude, when Istanbul’s foreign policy had been dictated largely by the Sultan’s fear of Russia. The state of wartime affairs between Ankara and Moscow gradually fell in sharp contrast with the cordial atmosphere of the 1920s and 1930s. As opposed to previous historians who have dismissed Turkey’s wartime neutrality as a wily strategy of capitalizing on war, I argue that the underlying factor, guiding the Turkish state in its quest to remain neutral was the revival of Russophobia amongst the ruling circles in Ankara. There had never been a moment during the war for neither the Allies nor the Axis to depart Turkey from its neutrality unless some form of guarantee had soothed its Russian complex. A closer examination of the Turkish archives and the parliamentary minutes reveals that Turkey desired a German victory over Russia provided that this was followed by a British victory over Germany. In other words, Turks very much hoped to see another Brest-Litovsk status quo: two separate wars involving Germany, conducted independently by Britain and the USSR without cooperation.
