Use Manhole to judge braking & moving for QB Quarter Bridge l & R Touch his back, but not on his back> give lots of rear. Get down after 2nd roundabout (move after last turning on left). MOVE LATE for QB Braddon Bridge L & R Then get down. Top handle right, use campsite entrance / rugby club sign. BACK END. Snugborough D Use orange sign, green lamp-posts, white house, left at Ashlar Drive. 2 lefts Union Mills L r L v.important, do little right. V quick back from right to left. Bumpy in and out, stay out until after garage, then get down. Ballahutchin Road Head down, tucked in. Use dip off Glen Lough campsite to notify: use legs to wedge in tight. Be ready: arm over Glen Vine / Ballagarey r seat back, push into rear wheel. Goes light over crest into National limit). WORK Crosby l Shoulder at Crosby Corner (wall with white bricks). Stay D for crossroads. STAY LOW White chimney. Move L as soon as white building in sight. For r, get weight off chair Greeba Castle 2xL, R wheel - WORK. Watch for wall on exit. Don't move L-R too soon. Appledene L r Rock on knees, arm over seat unit. 2nd right important - stay middle right L then tuck White/grey roof/salmon house. Head down, big L then D. Stay out L as long as Greeba Bridge in necessary, brace. Gorse Lea r Push into back wheel for 2 right kinks, brace. Move up behind if starts to slide. Heavy brakes then move R. Move as braking, starts WELL before green sign. SLIDE UP. Ballacraine R Prepare to move as braking starts. Smooth, R to L from Ballacraine then M and push into back wheel. Arm against chair Ballaspur L r r wheel to brace. Doran's L Use the bike being light off Ballig Bridge. Move at white bridge. Half work the first right, quick move to left (hold a long time). Get forward EARLY for R as Laurel Bank M, L & R back end slides - touch his back Glen Moar (Black Dub) L & r (m) Use light off bridge for L-R change. Work / shoulder R. STRAIGHT INTO… Glen Helen 2xL, M, & L Double apex left (stay left), middle at bridge, left again at hotel. Grip, then steering. Move early as off-camber and uphill. Smooth transition. Give lots of Sarah's Cottage R front in first half of corner - fully work Bike will move to L, when in a straight line get onto knees and give front end; through 1st right give front end, exit 2nd right kink then knees left (rock on knees) give a little left bias for the left kink before Cronk-y-Voddy Straight then Lambfell Moar l get down Cronk-y-Voddy straight D Count. Get locked in. Just push into back wheel, BRACE, for 3 right kinks starting at church, get ready at 2nd 11th D right, QUICK change to left: Up on knees for 3rd right in order to move left. Drinkwater's 2 x L Then D, but keep head up for big bump between Drinkwater's and Handley's Handley's l r Rock on knees both L & R. Stay slightly L all the way to Ballaskyr Ballaskyr Bridge l l Gently work left prior to Ballaskyr, then Rock on knees L Move left before 2nd cottage, slide in then left again at bottom. Then D quickly before big Barregarrow Hill top & bottom L-M-L BUMP, bumpy til KM. Push inside of back against wheel arch, roll on knees but not middle of platform, roll L again. Left at bottom: wait until big bump. 13th Cronk Urleigh M (r ) Push against back wheel for 2 rights - half work - white wall SLIPPERY Look for road sign. Double apex R first, then 13th sign. Triple L then D. Arm over back Westwood Cottage r r 3 x L IMMEDIATELY. SLIDE. Move R at 2nd white gateway (after white wall). Then D after traffic lights, change Douglas Road corner R in tarmac Kirk Michael D l L Leave arm over seat back. Work left at Faie ny Cabal and Vicarage Birkin's Bends M r r Push against back wheel for 2 rights. Second right, up on knees to use g-force to drop left. Move left at 2nd right apex, Left for 1st apex only then D before JUMP at yellow cottage. Rhencullen L Get weight forward, shoulders level. Very quick corner - try rocking on knees. Bishopscourt Alpine r Push hard into rear wheel for Alpine, wedge hard against g-force. WHITE COTTAGE. Ballacob r MEERKAT. On knees-hold on for JUMP. Up high on knees - wind brake. Rock knees on Ballaugh Bridge / Gwen's Cottage M l exit 3 telegraph poles on R, Farm sign on left. D quickly & lean forward before JUMP. (R, L, Ballacrye Bend L M) 2 bumps on entry:1st R push hard into back wheel, work 1st & 2nd L then D till Sulby Quarry Bends M-L r L Bridge. Sulby Glen Hotel/Sulby Straight D Arm over seat unit before right kink, 400yds to bridge. SLIDE: watch braking foot. Fully work R. Heavy brakes then big right. Get up at end of Sulby Bridge R trees: start work at start of braking Ginger Hall 2 xL Double apex left then M Stay in the middle as long as possible. Work first left only then D . Wedge in tight BUMPY. Kerrowmoar L Watch for jump at pale yellow cottage on right. Arm over back until cottage. Smooth tarmac, look for chimney, 3 x white walls incl balls on walls. Push into back Glen Tramman M-L wheel, then left and D. BUMPY. Stay in middle as long as possible on approach Churchtown / Conker fields l Rock left for K tree Sky Hill / Pinfold Cottage L r 3 trees. Use right beforehand as clue. V BUMPY. Shoulder r on exit (smooth tarmac) Milntown r Jump at Lezayre road sign. Shoulder the right afterwards. Blue railings & green / yellow bridge. Big left, then hand over back immediately - tarmac School House L change at bridge. Parliament Square R l SLIDE. MOVE LATE. Fully work R, then rock left. Cruickshanks/Mayhill R Bumpy. Get out at bridge. FULLY WORK. Pull into seat unit. Wait for new smooth tarmac before moving left (look for road junction & phone box on Whitegates L RHS, Beaumont on LHS). Stella Maris r Up on elbow: push into back wheel for as long as poss to help braking at hairpin. MOVE LATE. Wait for 1st gear change before moving. Get in quick to keep weight on Hairpin L-M back wheel to help powering up the hill. Arm over back immediately V late up onto back for 1st right, work back end; more front end on second right it tightens Waterworks l - 2 x R up. Bumps on apex. Tower Bends L, M-L Push into back wheel and then L twice. Quick change from preceding L, pulling uphill against braking. Give front for R then M Gooseneck R weight on back wheel. Back end will come round, give as much grip as possible. STRAIGHT INTO… After Gooseneck QUICKLY rock on knees to work left, then arm over seat unit ready for Centenary Bends 2 x L Joeys Joey's r Small right, work, just up onto back 3 x L, M When chair wheel is on white hatching, work R. Still turning L when trying to move R, be Guthrie's Memorial then R aware. 27th Milestone L m/r L, then up behind driver through white walls r then D and rest. Shoulder if tired. Mountain Mile Mountain Box 3 x L 3 sets of white walls - move at third. Caseys r Shoulder. Black Hut 2 x L Verandah r D 4 rights, DON'T WORK. Just push into back wheel Graham Memorial / Bungalow Bridge L r Left then push into back wheel. Feel 3 drains on L apex. Arm over seat unit Bungalow L Top handle r before tram lines then D up Hailwood Rise. Push into back wheel at R Slight r at Hailwood Heights, then Meerkat! Push into back wheel for slight right leading Brandywell 2 x L into this then double apex left. Push into back wheel for slight right leading into this then triple apex left. STRAIGHT 32nd Duke's 3 x L ONTO BACK INTO… Windy Corner R M SLIDE. Fully work. Tarmac change. MOVE AT BRAKING / GEAR CHANGE 33rd 2 x L Push into back wheel for slight right leading into this then double apex left. Keppel Gate L Push into back wheel then L and stay out L. Tuck head down out of wind. Kate's Cottage L L then D quickly. JUMP. Hand over seat unit (important). SLIPPERY SLIDE. Look for speed limit road sign on left, get out as he starts braking. Fully work Creg-Ny-Baa R then D. Sunny Orchard Brandish L V. fast beware of the wind. V late apex, get out late. Look for 2nd small bush on r SLIDE. Again fast. Up at /// marker. Top handle, smooth immediate L transition, head Hillberry R down. Can Meerkat L.IGNORE orange R sign for Signpost but move as soon as can see green Cronk-ny-Mona 4 x L roundabout sign.

The roads hierarchy is available on the Department's website, and represents the relative importance of roads to the Island's network. More spend proportionally is expected on the more important routes which provide strategic routes for the Island. This is a working document that is subject to change.     37 Manx Place-Names: an Ulster View Kay Muhr In this chapter I will discuss place-name connections between Ulster and Man, beginning with the early appearances of Man in Irish tradition and its association with the mythological realm of Emain Ablach, from the 6th to the I 3th century. 1 A good introduction to the link between Ulster and Manx place-names is to look at Speed's map of Man published in 1605.2 Although the map is much later than the beginning of place-names in the Isle of Man, it does reflect those place-names already well-established 400 years before our time. Moreover the gloriously exaggerated Manx-centric view, showing the island almost filling the Irish sea between Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales, also allows the map to illustrate place-names from the coasts of these lands around. As an island visible from these coasts Man has been influenced by all of them. In Ireland there are Gaelic, Norse and English names - the latter now the dominant language in new place-names, though it was not so in the past. The Gaelic names include the port towns of Knok (now Carrick-) fergus, "Fergus' hill" or "rock", the rock clearly referring to the site of the medieval castle. In 13th-century Scotland Fergus was understood as the king whose migration introduced the Gaelic language. Further south, Dundalk "fort of the small sword" includes the element dun "hill-fort", one of three fortification names common in early Irish place-names, the others being rath "ring­ fort" and lios "enclosure".

    Statutory Document No. 288/03 ROAD RACES ACT 1982 THE TOURIST TROPHY MOTOR CYCLE RACES ORDER 2003 Coming into Operation: 26th April 2003 In exercise of the powers conferred on the Department of Transport by Sections 1 and 2 of the Road Races Act 1982 1 , and of all enabling powers, the following Order is hereby made :- S Introductory 1. Citation and commencement This Order may be cited as the Tourist Trophy Motor Cycle Races Order 2003 and shall come into operation on the 26 th April 2003. 2. Interpretation (1) In this Order - "the Act" means the Road Races Act 1982; "the Clerk of the Course" means the individual so designated as Clerk of the Course by the promoter in . the Official Programme of the 2003 TT Races and includes any deputy or assistant Clerk of the Course so designated; "closure period" means any period during which an authorisation under Article 3 or 4 is in force in relation to the Course or any part of the Course; references to a constable shall be construed in accordance with section 3 of the Act (appointment of marshals); "the Course" means the roads specified in Schedule 1; "the Department" means the Department of Transport; 1 1982 c.14 • Price: f 1.60 Price Code: B 1 "postpone", in relation to a race, includes declaring void a race which has already begun.     Statutory Document No 3 3 4/97 ROAD RACES ACT 1982 MANX GRAND PRIX RACE ORDER 1997 Coming into Operation: 22nd July 1997 In exercise of the powers conferred on the Department of Transport by Sections 1 and 2 of the Road Races Act 1982 (a), and of all other enabling powers on the application of the Manx Motor Cycle Club Limited, the following Order is hereby made:- Citation and commencement 1. This Order may be cited as the Manx Grand Prix Race Order 1997 and shall come into operation on the 22nd July 1997. Interpretation 2. In this Order:- "the Clerk of the Course" means the official so designated by the Promoter in the official Programme of the Manx Grand Prix Races and includes (in the absence of the Clerk of the Course) any Deputy Clerk of the Course so designated; "the Course" means the roads and portions of roads set out and described in Schedule 1 and includes parts of the Course,verges, footways and other similar parts of the public highway. "the Department" means the Department of Transport; • "marshal" means a marshal appointed by the Chief Constable under Section 3 of the Road Races Act 1982; "practice days" and "practice periods" means the days and periods of time respectively specified in Article 4 (2); "promoter" means the Manx Motor Cycle Club Limited; "race days" subject to Article 6 means the days specified in Article 4 (3); "race periods" subject to Article 6, means the periods of time specified in Article 4 (3) when the Course (subject to Article 3) is closed to traffic in order to permit racing and purposes incidental thereto.
