Copyright C Cambridge University Press doi:10.1017/S0269889707001299 Printed in the United Kingdom Ber Borochov’s “The Tasks of Yiddish Philology” Barry Trachtenberg University at Albany Argument Ber Borochov (1881–1917), the Marxist Zionist revolutionary who founded the political party Poyle Tsien (Workers of Zion), was also one of the key theoreticians of Yiddish scholarship. His landmark 1913 essay, “The Tasks of Yiddish Philology,” was his first contribution to the field and crowned him as its chief ideologue. Modeled after late nineteenth-century European movements of linguistic nationalism, “The Tasks” was the first articulation of Yiddish scholarship as a discrete field of scientific research. His tasks ranged from the practical: creating a standardized dictionary and grammar, researching the origins and development of the language, and establishing a language institute; to the overtly ideological: the “nationalizing and humanizing” of the Yiddish language and its speakers. The essay brought a new level of sophistication to the field, established several of its ideological pillars, and linked Yiddish scholarship to the material needs of the Jewish people. Although “The Tasks” was greeted with a great deal of skepticism upon its publication, after his death, Borochov became widely accepted as the “founder” of modern Yiddish studies. “As long as a people remain ‘illiterate’ in their own language, one cannot yet speak of a national culture” (Borochov 1913, page 355 in this issue) When Ber Borochov’s manifesto “The Tasks of Yiddish Philology” appeared in 1913, few people could imagine that Yiddish was substantial enough to be the basis of a new scholarly discipline. -

QUEST N. 17 – FOCUS A Quest for Yiddishland: The 1937 World Yiddish Cultural Congress by Gennady Estraikh Abstract In August 1935, a group of intellectuals who gathered in Vilna at a jubilee conference of the Jewish Scientific Institute, YIVO, announced the founding of a movement called the Yiddish Culture Front (YCF), whose aim would be to ensure the preservation of Yiddish culture. The article focuses on the congress convened by the YCF in Paris. The congress, a landmark in the history of Yiddishism, opened on September 17, 1937, before a crowd of some 4,000 attendees. 104 delegates represented organizations and institutions from 23 countries. Radically anti-Soviet groups boycotted the convention, considering it a communist ploy. Ironically, the Kremlin cancelled the participation of a Soviet delegation at the last moment. From the vantage point of the delegates, Paris was the only logical center for its World Yiddish Cultural Association (IKUF or YIKUF) created after the congress. However, the French capital was not destined to become the world capital of Yiddish intellectual life. Influential circles of Yiddish literati, still torn by ideological strife rather than united in any common cultural “Yiddishland,” remained concentrated in America, Poland, and the Soviet Union. Founded by a group of Eastern European intellectuals after World War I, YIVO became both the apex of secular Yiddish culture and the premier institution of Diaspora Nationalism, which fought for Jewish rights throughout the world. From its headquarters in Vilna (then Poland and now Lithuania), YIVO tried to balance schol- arly objectivity with its commitment to the Jewish masses. Using newly recovered documents that were believed destroyed by Hitler and Stalin, Cecile Esther Kuznitz tells for the i rst time the compelling story of how these scholars built a world-renowned institution despite dire pov- erty and antisemitism. She raises new questions about the relationship between Jewish cultural and political work and analyzes how national- ism arises outside of state power. Cecile Esther Kuznitz is an associate professor of history and the direc- tor of Jewish Studies at Bard College. A magna cum laude graduate of Harvard University, she received her Ph.D. from Stanford University. Her articles have been published in The YIVO Encyclopedia of Jews in Eastern Europe (2008), The Encyclopaedia Judaica (2007), The Worlds of S. An-sky (2006), The Oxford Handbook of Jewish Studies (2002), and Yiddish Language and Culture: Then and Now (1998). She previously taught at Georgetown University and has held fellowships at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies, and the Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. -

In 1933, Yiddish writer Moyshe Dovid Guiser arrived in the Chilean capital of Santiago.1 Frustrated with the situation in Argentina where he had lived for the past nine years, Guiser decided to make a new start on the other side of the Andes. -

I explore how the Holocaust, the creation of a Jewish state, and the Cold War affected Jewish conceptions of antisemitism as well as the nature and character of Jewish collective action on both the global and the domestic stage. After investigating the ways in which Jews understood and reacted to the trial culturally, religiously, organizationally, nationally, and politically, I assert that in the early 1950s, Jews were in a process of redefinition. The role of Israel in diasporic Jewish affairs, the relationship between Jews and the Left, the position of Jews in the Cold War, and the nature and character of Jewish central leadership figured prominently in the lives of individual Jews and Jewish communities in the years immediately following the end of the Second World War. -

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Victoria University Eprints Repository 1 Finding his Kronstadt: Howard Fast, 1956 and American Communism PHILLIP DEERY* Victoria University, Melbourne The scholarship on the impact on communists of Khrushchev’s “secret speech” to the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1956 is limited. Generally it is located within broader studies of organisational upheavals and ideological debates at the leadership level of communist parties. Rarely has there been analysis of the reverberations at the individual level. Consistent with Barrett’s pioneering approach, this paper seeks to incorporate the personal into the political, and inject a subjective dimension into the familiar top-down narrative of American communism. It will do this by focusing on the motivations, reactions and consequences of the defection of one Party member, the writer Howard Fast. It will thereby illuminate the story of personal anguish experienced by thousands in the wake of Khrushchev’s revelations about Stalin. The Defection On 1 February 1957, the front-page of the New York Times (NYT) carried a story that reverberated across the nation and, thereafter, the world. It began: “Howard Fast said yesterday that he had dissociated himself from the American Communist party and no longer considered himself a communist”.1 The NYT article was carried by scores of local, state and national newspapers across the country. Modern Yiddish Literary Studies: A Shifting Landscape Hana Wirth-Nesher Department of English and American Studies, Tel Aviv University Abstract This introductory essay maps significant contributions to the study of mod- ern Yiddish literature over the past two decades. Studies of Yiddish modernism have tended to focus on three aspects of this literature: continuity through the use of tra- ditional, mythic, and ethnographic sources; rupture expressed through alienation in modernity; and the intersection and dialogue with models of modern literature in a comparative context. Furthermore, Max Weinreich’s contention that the process of fusion in Yiddish language formation did not stop with its creation but is continuous and cumulative, is also evident in recent studies of modern Yiddish literature that pay close attention to linguistic dimensions of Yiddish writing. This is exemplified by the subjects that have engaged scholars of modern Yiddish literature over the past two decades: canon formation, translation theory and practice, “postvernacular” language, and multilingual poetics. A brief overview of the essays in this special issue demon- strates the unique historical, linguistic, and literary features of Yiddish that offer new opportunities for exploring translation, poetics, hermeneutics, literary history, reading practices, commemorative sites in print, and intercultural relations. 1 Introduction Matthew Hoffman and Henry Srebrnik s Jewish life in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries became A more economically and politically precarious, various movements arose which claimed they had found the “solution” to the political dilemmas facing the Jewish people. Some were religious, some frankly assimilationist, some completely universalistic and adherents of socialist doctrines, and some, of course, were nationalistic and Zionist. One political movement, though, combined elements of two strands, Marxist universalism and Jewish nation- alism. This grouping of like-minded organizations, active mainly between 1917 and 1956, we have termed the Jewish Communist movement. It had active members throughout the Jewish diaspora, in particular in the various countries of Europe and North America, as well as in Australia, Palestine, South Africa, and South America. These were later interconnected on a global level through international movements such as the World Jewish Cultural Union, or Alveltlekher Yidisher Kultur Farband (YKUF), founded in 1937. YKUF, which operated mainly in Yiddish, created a great variety of newspapers and theoretical and literary journals, which allowed Jewish Communists to communicate, disseminate information, and debate issues such as Jewish nationality and statehood independently of other Commu- nists. Though officially part of the larger world Communist movement, in reality the Jewish Communists developed their own specific ideology, which was infused as much by Jewish sources—Labour Zionism, the
