Lying and Asserting Andreas Stokke — penultimate version, published in Journal of Philosophy, CX(1), 2013, 33–60 — Abstract The paper argues that the correct definition of lying is that to lie is to assert some- thing one believes to be false, where assertion is understood in terms of the notion of the common ground of a conversation. It is shown that this definition makes the right pre- dictions for a number of cases involving irony, joking, and false implicature. In addition, the proposed account does not assume that intending to deceive is a necessary condition on lying, and hence counts so-called bald-faced lies as lies. 1 Introduction This paper argues for a definition of lying. The definition is that you lie when you assert something you believe to be false. This definition is not new, and many philosophers have held it. Yet these proposals differ from each other in relying on different views of assertion. I argue that the account of assertion needed to define lying is the one familiar from the work of Stalnaker (1978), (1998), (2002) according to which to assert that p is to propose that p become common ground. So my definition of lying is that you lie when you say something you believe to be false and thereby propose that it become common ground. Traditionally, many philosophers – e.g., Augustine (1952 [395]b), Bok (1978), Williams (2002), Frankfurt (2005 [1986]) – have defined lying as saying what you believe to be false with the intent to deceive. But as pointed out by Carson (2006), Sorensen (2007), Fallis (2009), and others, this definition fails to do justice to the phenomenon of what Sorensen calls bald- faced lies. -

Rule 801(a) de- fines hearsay by limiting it to words and conduct intended as an assertion, but the rule does not define the term assertion. Courts and legal scholars have focused relatively little attention on the nature and definition of assertion. That is unfortunate, because assertion is a robust concept that has been the subject of intense philosophic study over recent decades. -

The Case for Not Being Born The antinatalist philosopher David Benatar argues that it would be better if no one had children ever again. By Joshua Rothman November 27, 2017 David Benatar may be the world’s most pessimistic philosopher. An “antinatalist,” he believes that life is so bad, so painful, that human beings should stop having children for reasons of compassion. “While good people go to great lengths to spare their children from suffering, few of them seem to notice that the one (and only) guaranteed way to prevent all the suffering of their children is not to bring those children into existence in the first place,” he writes, in a 2006 book called “Better Never to Have Been: The Harm of Coming Into Existence.” In Benatar’s view, reproducing is intrinsically cruel and irresponsible—not just because a horrible fate can befall anyone, but because life itself is “permeated by badness.” In part for this reason, he thinks that the world would be a better place if sentient life disappeared altogether. For a work of academic philosophy, “Better Never to Have Been” has found an unusually wide audience. It has 3.9 stars on GoodReads, where one reviewer calls it “required reading for folks who believe that procreation is justified.” A few years ago, Nic Pizzolatto, the screenwriter behind “True Detective,” read the book and made Rust Cohle, Matthew McConaughey’s character, a nihilistic antinatalist. (“I think human consciousness is a tragic misstep in evolution,” Cohle says.) When Pizzolatto mentioned the book to the press, Benatar, who sees his own views as more thoughtful and humane than Cohle’s, emerged from an otherwise reclusive life to clarify them in interviews. -

On Bullshit Harry G. Frankfurt Princeton University Press, 2005 67pp. $14.95, ISBN0 691 12294 6 Despite its provocative title, On Bullshit is a serious little book of philosophy, the commercial and critical success of which makes it the surprise publication of the year. It is rare for an academic essay of this kind to receive much popular attention, but Harry G. Frankfurt’s On Bullshit works hard at being accessible, entertaining and undemanding. The basis of Frankfurt’s theory is immediately recognisable to us all, whether we like to admit it or not, because ‘one of the most salient features of our culture is that there is so much bullshit. Everyone knows this. Each of us contributes his share’. And who doesn’t like to read all about themselves? The problem in our social and cultural context is as Frankfurt states: there really is so much bullshit. Everywhere. The problem from a philosophical point of view is that there is no clear understanding of what bullshit is, ‘we lack a conscientiously developed appreciation of what it means to us’. So Frankfurt sets about beginning the development of a ‘theory of bullshit’. Frankfurt’s theory is that bullshit is worse than a lie. Telling the truth and lying are two sides of the same game, both positions acknowledge and have a relationship to ‘truth’, whereas bullshit has no concern for the truth at all. The only concern of the bullshitter is his image, what people may think of him. The bullshitter may actually alight on the truth, more by accident than design, but that is not the motive of bullshit and is of no consequence to the bullshitter. -

David Benatar, Death, and the Harm in Existence BY MICHAEL DA SILVA Anti-natalism is the philosophical position opposing procreation. It has both local and global forms; “in its local form it applies only to particular people in certain instances, in its global form, to everyone.”1 Philosopher David Benatar, an expert in applied ethics presently of the University of Cape Town, is one of the leading proponents of global anti-natalism. While Benatar’s position was initially developed in journal articles,2 his 2006 book, Better Never to Have Been: The Harm of Coming into Existence, is the most detailed account of his anti- natalist stance. It is also the leading argument for the inherent harm of existence; as its title suggests, it argues that coming into existence is always a harm. The consequences of this Utilitarian perspective are severe. Benatar argues against the moral permissibility of creating sentient beings and for a phased extinction of the human race. For Benatar, “[r]eproduction is never morally acceptable...[and s]ex can be morally acceptable only if it is not reproductive.3 Benatar’s position is extreme, but influential. While negation of his central theses would not justify unlimited procreational autonomy on its own, even limited ethical acceptance of procreation may require strong arguments against him. 1 Brake, E. & Millum, J. Frankfurt ON CHARLES HOMER HASKINS Charles Homer Haskins (1870–1937), for whom the ACLS lecture series is named, organized the founding of the American Council of Learned Societies in 1919 and served as its first chairman from 1920 to 1926. He received a PhD in history from Johns Hopkins University at the age of 20. Appointed an instructor at the Univer- sity of Wisconsin, Haskins became a full professor in two years. After 12 years there, he moved to Harvard University, where he served as dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences from 1908 to 1924. At the time of his retirement in 1931, he was Henry Charles Lea Professor of Medieval History. A close advisor to President Woodrow Wilson (whom he had met at Johns Hopkins), Haskins attended the Paris Peace Conference of 1919 as chief of the Division of Western Europe of the American Commission to Negotiate Peace. He served as president of the American Historical Association in 1922, and was a founder and the second president of the Medieval Academy of America in 1926–27. A great American teacher, Haskins also did much to establish the reputation of American scholarship abroad. -
