Otives and Impediments in Describing War Memories: the Tragedy of the Jews

The Dutch East Indies and the Reorientation of Dutch Social Democracy, 1929-40*
THE DUTCH EAST INDIES AND THE REORIENTATION OF DUTCH SOCIAL DEMOCRACY, 1929-40* Erik Hansen Between 1919 and the German occupation of the Netherlands in May 1940, the Dutch social democratic movement gradually experienced a pro found internal transformation. Cautious reformist elements had always been strong in the Sociaal Democratische Arbeiderspartij (SDAP--Social Democratic Workers' Party), and with the passage of time their strength continued to increase; left-opposition elements were purged from the party, first in 1909 and again in 1932, so that whatever strength revo lutionary Marxist elements might have had within the party was dissi pated. Throughout the 1920s, the SDAP leadership slowly and painfully gravitated toward a pragmatic, ethical, and parliamentary socialism which stressed the primacy of law, due process, civil liberties, and political democracy. The change on occasion entailed brutal debate. When the depression broke in 1929, the SDAP found itself incapable of generating a positive political or economic response. Only in 1934, under pressure from rising levels of unemployment, the threat of fas- cistic movements of the radical right, and competition on the left from various revolutionary groups including the Communist Party, did the party seek a solution in planisme.11 The movement to planisme served a dual purpose. By presenting an antidepression program which provided for a high degree of economic planning within a capitalist framework, the SDAP sought to attract middle-class elements who had traditionally voted for bourgeois parties. At the same time, the party could continue to stress its democratic, parliamentary commitments against the radical left and right. This attempt to break into new constituencies in Dutch society failed, and on the eve of the German occupation the SDAP remained a basically working-class party. -
Jaarboek 1979

Western Europe
Western Europe Great Britain Domestic Affairs A HE YEAR 1970 will certainly be remembered—whatever else his- tory may subsequently add—as "the year of the counter-revolution," resulting from the unforeseen Conservative victory in the general election of June 18. When Parliament dissolved on May 29, Prime Minister Harold Wilson and the Labour party then had a majority of 65 seats in the Commons, but was much eroded by by-election losses. On June 19 Edward Heath was prime minister, with an over-all majority of 31 seats and an effective majority of 29. The Conservatives had made a net gain of 66 seats and Labour had suffered 60 losses. This overturn was so unexpected that The Guardian headlined its lead article of June 19: "Mr. Heath does a Truman." Virtually no commentator or opinion poll had predicted this outcome. The dominant tone of comment was to deplore the low intellectual level of the debate between the two dominant parties. The debate had become an adjunct to television, rather than the reverse, it was said. Be that as it may, less argu- able was the equally general comment that no serious issue divided the parties. The two comments were perhaps related. As for the latter comment, it was certainly true that both parties were at one on policy regarding the European Common Market, that they tacitly agreed not to discuss the problem of rapidly rising wages, and that such issues of contention as did exist—the maintenance of a small force east of Suez, agricultural policy, the degree of state intervention in industry, even trade union reform—all failed to arouse the public. -
NASR Spring 2020
Netherlands American Studies Review Spring 2020 Welcome to the very first edition of the Netherlands American Studies Review, the new bi-annual student journal of the Netherlands American Studies Association (NASA). In the last couple of years, we have searched for new ways to promote and celebrate student excellence in the field of North American Studies nationwide, including – but not limited to – history, politics, literature, and society. The result of this quest is lying in front of you: a journal filled with fantastic papers and book reviews that truly embody the outstanding quality of student work in our field. In this Spring 2020 issue, you will find eleven carefully selected pieces that reflect on the topical diversity and interdisciplinarity of American Studies in the Netherlands. Our students cover a wide variety of issues, ranging from tax law to literature and from environmental skepticism to video games. These papers were written by students in different stages of their higher education, including Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD programs. We are very thankful for all the students who have sent us their writings, for the editors who have worked tirelessly to select and finetune their papers, and, of course, for the NASA Board, which has supported us throughout the process. We are proud of the final product and hope it will inspire you as much as it did us. We hope you will enjoy the Spring 2020 edition of the Netherlands American Studies Review! De Rode Loper Naar Peking,Josef Meri – Pilgrimage to the Prophet
Pieke, Contemporary Chinese Studies in the Netherlands
Frank N. Pieke Contemporary China Studies in the Netherlands1 1. The disappearance of contemporary China in Chinese Studies2 In 1662 after a prolonged siege, Zheng Chenggong (or Koxinga) forced the Dutch East India Company (VOC) to abandon Fort Zeelandia on Taiwan. Since then, the Netherlands has not had any systematic and enduring imperial, colonial or missionary involvement in China, quite unlike many other European powers. As other articles in this volume document, the growth of the study of China in the second half of the nineteenth century was mostly a modest offshoot of colonial involvement in the Dutch East Indies. The interest of early sinologists was largely focussed on aspects of what was then contemporary China that were of practical use in dealing with Chinese subjects in the Dutch Indies: classical Chinese, southern Chinese spoken languages, translation, secret societies, law, religion. Despite these limitations, what made Dutch sinologists of this period stand out from later generations was their awareness that contemporary China ought to be understood as a complex whole. Classical literati culture and the popular and vulgar realities of contemporary daily life were tied together in a series of connections that had to be understood as much through close and personal observation and study as through immersion in the classics. These early sinologists also did not shy away from commenting and writing on many aspects of political, social and economic developments in China.3 The end of the Chinese empire came in 1911. China’s imperial present suddenly became its traditional past. Sinology did not respond like one would expect by shifting its focus to the momentous political, cultural, social and economic transformations that constituted China’s new present.
