Letter of Inquiry / There are tn'o special holidays here in Hawaii, honoring Hawaiian monarchs, Karla Peters Prince Kuhio and Kamehameha. Kamehameha Da,v, ]une 11, was first proclaimed Parks & Recreation by Kamehameha V (on Decernber 22, 187l) as a day to honor his grandfather, Department . Daryl Fujiwara Here on Maui our celebration is "Na sfdhawaii6gmail.com called the Kamehameha Commemorative Pa'u Parade and Hoblaule'a" and it is the longest running community event in West 8082648779 Maui. I have been involved with the event since 1999 and was entrusted with the overall coordinator position in 201l. Na Kamehameha Commemorative Pa'u Parade The people of Maui and the visitor year after year line Front Street to enjoy the and Hoblauleh / Lokahi Pacific pa'u parade filled with our community non-profits and local businesses. To follow, everyone heads to the shade at Kearvaiki (the Lahaina Banyan Tree) for two days of 20, 2019 fune hoblaule'a (festivities). - 9:45am Pau Parade, Kenui St. to Shaw The pa'u rider is the physical manifestation of the unification of Hawaii by St. along Front Street Kamehameha the Great. Pa'u riding is an equestrian slvle, created in Hawaii when June 20 &21,2020 horse were first introduced to the islands as a gift to King Kamehameha. Princesses - 9am - 5pm are bedecked with yards ofbeautif'ul satin and lei. Even there horses are covered in Hoolaulea, Keawaiki, Banyan lei. Significantly, they ride along the same street that Kamehameha and his family Tree Park once walked while Lahaina was the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii.

Mokuula Back Lot The hoblauleh is hosted in partnership with the Lahaina Town Action Committee 9am-2pm and the Lahaina Hawaiian Civic Club. There you will find, Maui Made artist, non- for Hookupu Ceremony, by profit food vendors, free keiki activities, exhibits, Hawaiian music, and hula. inr,'itation only

Our committee lvould like to requesting the Maui County Parks and Recreation Department allow our event to have (20) vendors at our hoblauleh to help with event overhead; and have said department recommend a (3) year event approval from the Cultural Resource Commission.

Our goal is to honor our alii and create a venue to educate our community and the l"isitor about our culture.

We are proud to continue this tradition here on Maui.

February L3,2020 (Page 2)

This is an important event that promotes, celebrates, and honors Hawaiian culture and perpetuates iloha for our community and its visitors. It is enjoyed by local families and visitors alike. The event will be conducted as it has been done since 2001.

The support of the MPD has been crucial to the success of the event. Like all years previous we will be asking for the police department to help with the clearing of Front Street in accordance with the tow notices for the safety of the parade spectators and to be stationed at various intersections to help block incoming traffic to Front Street during the processiory if manpower is sufficient. If not, we do have community supporters (volunteers) to help with the others.

A map of the traffic management plan is attached. If you have any questions or concerns feel free to reach me at 808.264.8779.

Our event is now under the support of Lokahi Pacific. I understand that in the past, payment for off duty officers was delayed. Rest assured that this new fiscal office will expedite as a priority.

Mahalo Nui for your consideration of our request,
