Everglades Interim Report Chapter 2: Hydrologic Needs Chapter 2: Hydrologic Needs: The Effects of Altered Hydrology on the Everglades Fred Sklar, Chris McVoy, Randy Van Zee, Dale Gawlik, Dave Swift, Winnie Park, Carl Fitz, Yegang Wu, Dave Rudnick, Thomas Fontaine, Shili Miao, Amy Ferriter, Steve Krupa, Tom Armentano, Ken Tarboton, Ken Rutchey, Quan Dong, and Sue Newman Summary This chapter is an overview of historic hydrologic patterns, the effects of altered hydrology on the ecology of the Everglades, and the tools needed to assess and predict the impacts of water management. This is an anthology of historical information and hydrologic studies conducted over the last 100 years, covering millions of hectares, and includes scientific studies of Everglades soils, plants, and animals. The synthesis of this information, for setting hydrologic targets for restoration, is the goal of the Central and South Florida (C&SF) Restudy (see Chapter 10). This ecosystem assessment of the Everglades in relation to only hydrology is difficult because hydrology is strongly linked to water quality constituents, whose utilization, mobilization, and degradation in the Everglades is in turn, linked to hydrologic events and management. Although this chapter disassociates water quality from hydrology, in an attempt to address water management needs, and to meet the obligations set by the Everglades Forever Act, it is important to understand these linkages for sustainable management and restoration. Historic Hydrologic Change Drainage of the Everglades began in 1880 and in some locations, reduced water tables up to nine feet, reversed the direction of surface water flows, altered vegetation, created abnormal fire patterns, and induced high rates of subsidence. -

BRIDGEPORT SOUND TIGERS: COACHES BIOS BRENT THOMPSON - HEAD COACH Brent Thompson is in his seventh season as head coach of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, which also marks his ninth year in the New York Islanders organization. Thompson was originally hired to coach the Sound Tigers on June 28, 2011 and led the team to a division title in 2011-12 before being named assistant South Division coach of the Islanders for two seasons (2012-14). On May 2, 2014, the Islanders announced Thompson would return to his role as head coach of the Sound Tigers. He is 246-203-50 in 499 career regular-season games as Bridgeport's head coach. Thompson became the Sound Tigers' all-time winningest head coach on Jan. 28, 2017, passing Jack Capuano with his 134th career victory. Prior to his time in Bridgeport, Thompson served as head coach of the Alaska Aces (ECHL) for two years (2009-11), winning the Kelly Cup Championship in 2011. During his two seasons as head coach in Alaska, Thompson amassed a record of 83- 50-11 and won the John Brophy Award as ECHL Coach of the Year in 2011 after leading the team to a record of 47-22-3. Thompson also served as a player/coach with the CHL’s Colorado Eagles in 2003-04 and was an assistant with the AHL’s Peoria Rivermen from 2005-09. Before joining the coaching ranks, Thompson enjoyed a 14-year professional playing career from 1991-2005, which included 121 NHL games and more than 900 professional contests. The Calgary, AB native was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the second round (39th overall) of the 1989 NHL Entry Draft. -

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE December 23 , 20 20 Contact: Brian Breseman (813.301.6871 , [email protected] ) Trevor van Knotsenburg (813.301.6826, [email protected] ) LIGHTNING ANNOUNCE 2021 SEASON SCHEDULE TAMPA BAY – The Tampa Bay Lightning announced their 2021 regular season schedule , presented by AdventHealth, today . The schedule features a 56 - game slate with the Bolts opening the season on January 13 against the Chicago Blackhawks and wrapping up the campaign on May 8 at the Flo rida Panthers. As part of the NHL’s return to play protocols, the Lightning have been assigned to the league’s re - aligned, eight - team Central Division. Tampa Bay will play each divisional opponent eight times and will not compete against other division s during the regular season. Other teams in that division include the Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Dallas Stars, Detroit Red Wings, Florida Panthers and Nashville Predators. Detroit and Florida are the only other teams fr om the Atlantic Division to also be moved to the Central through re - alignment during return to play. The Lightning will play an even split of 28 home and road games featuring complete series of consecutive games against the same opponent. The longest home stand of the season will take place from April 15 through April 25 with six games, two each against Florida, Carolina and Dallas. The longest road trip will consist of five games, t hree against Chicago and two at Detroit, from March 3 through March 11. Ticket information, if available, will be made available at a later date. -

Press Release (23 October 2020) Contact: Bill Patjane Phone: 800-651-8466 Email: [email protected] 2020 APDA Shawn Thornton Award for Excellence Winner Announced Shawn Thornton, an NHL- former Boston Bruins Player and Executive with the NHL Florida Panthers, has done so much with the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) MA Chapter, that the Chapter named an award after him: the APDA/Shawn Thornton Award for Excellence, awarded to an individual who demonstrates outstanding service, dedication and care in support of those living with Parkinson's disease. In the last 10 years the Shawn Thornton Foundation has raised over $1M for various charity including the APDA. In 2020, despite the pandemic and living & working in Florida, the Shawn Thornton Foundation successfully delivered the Putts and Punches for Parkinson’s Golf event in October in MA (following social distance guidelines). The 2020 APDA/Shawn Thornton Award for Excellence winner is Melissa Diggin, Nurse Practitioner, APDA Executive Committee Board Member and longtime APDA volunteer. Melissa grew up in Melrose, Massachusetts. She earned her undergraduate degree in Biology at Boston University. She then worked as a research assistant at Boston University School of Medicine in the Department of Neurology. She also assisted with the development and delivery of educational programs for the APDA. She then earned her master’s degree in nursing at University of California San Francisco. She is a board certified gerontological nurse practitioner. After graduation she returned to Boston University Medical Center, Department of Neurology where she worked for almost 9 years in the Movement Disorders Clinic treating patients with Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease and tremor and coordinating clinical research trials. -
