ADVAITA, CALEB A. MORSE1,2 AND DOUGLAS LADD3 ABSTRACT. – A total of 154 lichens, four lichenicolous fungi, and one allied fungus were collected by the authors from 2004 to 2015 from Pipestone National Monument (PNM), in Pipestone County, on the Prairie Coteau of southwestern Minnesota. Twelve additional species collected by previous researchers, but not found by the authors, bring the total number of taxa known for PNM to 171. This represents a substantial increase over previous reports for PNM, likely due to increased intensity of field work, and also to the marked expansion of corticolous and anthropogenic substrates since the site was first surveyed in 1899. Reexamination of 116 vouchers deposited in MIN and the PNM herbarium led to the exclusion of 48 species previously reported from the site. Crustose lichens are the most common growth form, comprising 65% of the lichen diversity. Sioux Quartzite provided substrate for 43% of the lichen taxa collected. Saxicolous lichen communities were characterized by sampling four transects on cliff faces and low outcrops. An annotated checklist of the lichens of the site is provided, as well as a list of excluded taxa. We report 24 species (including 22 lichens and two lichenicolous fungi) new for Minnesota: Acarospora boulderensis, A. contigua, A. erythrophora, A. strigata, Agonimia opuntiella, Arthonia clemens, A. muscigena, Aspicilia americana, Bacidina delicata, Buellia tyrolensis, Caloplaca flavocitrina, C. lobulata, C. -

HANSEN1 ABSTRACT. – Lichens were surveyed across nine ecologically sensitive areas of the U.S. Army’s Redstone Arsenal in Madison County, Alabama. From a total of 464 collections, 151 species in 64 genera were identified, including 12 state records and three new species currently being described. Prior to this study, only eight lichen species had been documented from the Redstone Arsenal and less than 40 were known from Madison County. Newly reported lichens for Alabama include Caloplaca pollinii, Clauzadea chondrodes, Enchylium coccophorum, Hypotrachyna dentella, Lepraria xanthonica, Phaeophyscia hirsuta, Phaeophyscia leana, Physciella chloantha, Physconia leucoleiptes, Physconia subpallida, Punctelia graminicola, and Usnea halei. Results from this study represent the first lichen survey of the Redstone Arsenal and will serve as a baseline for future studies. INTRODUCTION Lichens of northern Alabama are poorly studied and virtually no records have been published from Madison County. Though many papers documenting lichens from nearby regions exist, including the Great Smoky Mountains (Lendemer et al. 2013) and Southern Appalachian Mountains (Dey 1978), there are no published lichen reports from this area of northern Alabama. One state-wide checklist documented two lichen species from Madison County (Hansen 2003). A search of the Consortium of North American Lichen Herbaria (CNALH 2017) resulted in only 38 lichen specimens from Madison County, including eight from Redstone Arsenal (hereafter abbreviated RA). -

Lendemer: Institute of Systematic Botany, The New York Botanical Garden, Bronx, NY 10458-5126 USA ABSTRACT. Based upon voucher collections, 108 lichen species are reported from the Indiana Forest Alliance Ecoblitz area, a 900 acre unit in Morgan-Monroe and Yellowwood State Forests, Brown and Monroe Counties, Indiana. The lichen biota of the study area was characterized as: i) dominated by species with green coccoid photobionts (80% of taxa); ii) comprised of 49% species that reproduce primarily with lichenized diaspores vs. 44% that reproduce primarily through sexual ascospores; iii) comprised of 65% crustose taxa, 29% foliose taxa, and 6% fruticose taxa; iv) one wherein many species are rare (e.g., 55% of species were collected fewer than three times) and fruticose lichens other than Cladonia were entirely absent; and v) one wherein cyanolichens were poorly represented, comprising only three species. Taxonomic diversity ranged from 21 to 56 species per site, with the lowest diversity sites concentrated in riparian corridors and the highest diversity sites on ridges. Low Gap Nature Preserve, located within the study area, was found to have comparable species richness to areas outside the nature preserve, although many species rare in the study area were found only outside preserve boundaries. Sets of rare species are delimited and discussed, as are observations as to the overall low abundance of lichens on corticolous substrates and the presence of many unhealthy foliose lichens on mature tree boles. -

Hyerczyk 5204 South Natoma Ave. Chicago, IL 60638-1222 ABSTRACT Sixty-one species of lichens in 33 genera are reported from Livingston County, Illinois; 27 are of the crustose growth form, 23 are foliose, nine are fruticose, one is gelatinous, and one is veined. An annotated species list, and information on the distribution and habitats for each species, is provided. Although none of these represent new additions to the lichen flora of Illinois, none were previously reported for Livingston County. INTRODUCTION Livingston County is located in the northern half of central Illinois, approximately 145 km (90 miles) southwest of the city of Chicago (Figure 1). It has an area of 270,404 ha (668,169 acres). Although it is the fourth largest county in Illinois, nearly 97% of it is devoted to farming and agriculture, leaving very little left in the way of natural areas. According to Schwegman (1973), the entire county lies in the Grand Prairie Division of Illinois' natural divisions: the Grand Prairie Section. Topography is flat to gently rolling with the elevation averaging around 200 m (656 feet). The climate of north central Illinois is considered temperate (Bair, 1992). January temperature averages -1.27° C (29.7° F) maximum to -10.4° C (13.3° F) minimum. July temperature averages 29.7° C (85.5° F) maximum to 18.11° C (64.6° F) minimum. -
Lichen Checklist for North Carolina, USA
Volume 22 (2) 51 Lichen Checklist for North Carolina, USA Gary B. Perlmutter1 Abstract -- A checklist of lichens from a thorough literature review of both printed and online resources covering North Carolina, USA is presented. This list contains over 600 taxa from the state. While preparing a report for an herbaria review I had conducted for lichens of the Piedmont of North Carolina, I found it necessary to compile a checklist for the state to verify reviewed taxa as already reported or as new. The only existing checklist for North Carolina is from a website from the University of Hamburg, Germany (www.biologie.uni- hamburg.de/checklists/), which I found to be inadequate for my review. Therefore, I conducted a more thorough review of the literature, including both printed and online sources, from early papers (e.g. Oosting and Anderson 1937) to the most recent online publications (e.g. USGS 2005). The resulting checklist includes 605 lichen taxa and is the most complete listing of lichens of North Carolina to date. A Preliminary List of the Lichens of New York
Opuscula Philolichenum, 1: 55-74. 2004. A Preliminary List of the Lichens of New York RICHARD C. HARRIS1 ABSTRACT. – A list of 808 species and 7 subspecific taxa of lichens known to the author to occur in New York state is presented. The new combination Myriospora immersa (Fink ex J. Hedrick) R. C. Harris is made. The rationale for publishing this admittedly incomplete list of New York's lichens is that I am unlikely to ever have time to improve it significantly. The list has been accumulated more or less haphazardly over a period of twenty plus years. Many problems have been left unresolved. It is largely based on specimens held by The New York Botanical Garden (NY), Brooklyn Botanic Garden (BKL) and Buffalo Museum of Science (BUF), to a lesser extent Cornell University (CUP) and Farlow Herbarium, Harvard University (FH) and a few from New York State Museum (NYS) . The holdings of the New York State Museum represent a large collection not yet fully studied and will surely add significantly to knowledge of the state's lichen diversity. Surviving specimens for the earliest publication on New York lichens by Halsey (1824) are yet to be studied. Voucher information is available from the author upon request. The collections in BKL and BUF have been databased and copies can also be made available. For those interested, the history of lichenology in New York has been summarized by LaGreca (2001). Some literature records have been included if I consider them reliable, i.e., Brodo (1968) or significant, i.e., Lowe (1939). No doubt I have missed some worthy literature records in recent revisions. -
The Lichen Flora of the Joliet Military Training Area

Hyerczyk 5204 South Natoma Ave. Chicago, IL 60638-1222 ABSTRACT Sixty-nine species of lichens are reported from the Joliet Military Training Area, near Elwood, Illinois. Thirty-one species are of the crustose growth form, 27 are foliose, 8 are fruticose and 3 are squamulose. Twenty-six species are considered to be rare, 19 are common, 13 are occasional and 11 are frequent. Crataegus mollis is the most commonly occupied corticolous substrate, weathered dolomite is the most common saxicolous sub- strate and weathered wood is the most common lignicolous substrate. Lichens were also found growing on other substrates such as deer bones, prickly pear cactus pads, rusted metal, caulking and aluminum foil. Nearly 2/3 of all lichens known from Will County were found in this study indicating that lichens are a key componant of the ecosystem here. A key to the lichen flora of the Joliet Military Training Area is provided as well as information on their habitats, abundance and distribution. INTRODUCTION This project was undertaken to document and collect voucher specimens of the lichen flora of the Joliet Military Training Area, develop an identification key to the lichen flora there and provide information on their habitats, abundance and distribution. No previous work has been devoted to the lichen flora of the Joliet Military Training Area. The Joliet Military Training Area (JMTA) is a Federally owned natural area managed by the United States Army.
