Tan Sri joined the Federal Cabinet from 1978 to 2004 as Minister of Energy, Telecommunications and Posts (1978– 1989), Minister of Works (1989-1995), again as Minister of Energy, Telecommunications and Posts (1995-1998) and as Minister of Energy, Communications and Multimedia (1998 to 2004). It suggests that blogs perform three main functions, which help make a democracy more meaningful: blogs as fifth estate, blogs as networks, and blogs as platform for expression. First, blogs function as the fifth estate performing checks-and-balances over the government. This function is expressed by blogs’ role in the dissemination of information, providing alternative perspectives that challenge the dominant frame, and setting of news agenda. The second function of blogs is that they perform as networks. This is linked to the social-networking aspect of the blogosphere both online and offline. Blogs also have the potential to act as mobilizing agents. The mobilizing capability of blogs facilitated the mass street protests, which took place in late- 2007 and early-2008 in Malaysia.

This study investigates the delicate process of nation-building in Malaysia in the post 1970s, especially in the context of the vision of constructing the Bangsa Malaysia or 'a united Malaysian nation' enshrined in Mahathir's Vision 2020 project which was introduced in 1991. The aim of the study is firstly, to examine the underlying socio-political parameters that shaped and influenced the politics of nation-building in the country, and secondly, to explore the viability of the project of Bangsa Malaysia in the context of the daunting challenges involved in the process of nation-building. Drawing from a range of theoretical frameworks as well as from both primary and secondary data, the study contends that, based on the Malaysian experience, the potent interplay between the forces of ethnicity and nationalism constitute the crux of the problems in the politics of nation-building in Malaysia.

    28 JUN 2003 Abdullah-PBDS MOGGIE QUIT TO RESOLVE INTERNAL PARTY PROBLEMS, SAYS ABDULLAH JEMPOL, June 28 (Bernama) -- Datuk Amar Leo Moggie resigned as Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak (PBDS) president in a move to resolve internal party problems, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said today. "Indeed, there are problems. If not, he wouldn't have resigned, but his resignation was to solve the problems in the party," he said when asked if there were internal problems in PBDS, a component of the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN). Abdullah spoke to reporters after meeting officers, staff and trainees at the Ayer Hitam Police Training Centre (Pulapah), here. Abdullah said Moggie, who is also Energy, Communications and Multimedia Minister, had informed him and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad about his resignation as PBDS president. Moggie had held the party post since PBDS was formed 20 years ago. He resigned on Wednesday. "We (Dr Mahathir and I) can see Moggie's argument, no need for me to explain it here, they're reasonable," he said. Following Moggie's resignation, his deputy Datuk Daniel Tajem has taken over the post. Asked on the RM45,000 fine imposed on Gemencheh state assemblyman Datuk Waad Mansor by the Court of Appeal on three counts of corrupt practices, Abdullah said an elected representative's image would be tarnished by the conviction. "When someone is convicted for crime or corruption, his image will be marred," he said. The Court of Appeal yesterday overturned a High Court decision to acquit Waad and convicted him of three counts of corrupt practices and fined him a total of RM45,000.
