GROWING Mauritia Flexuosa in PALM BEACH COUNTY
GROWING Mauritia flexuosa IN PALM BEACH COUNTY Submitted by Charlie Beck Mauritia flexuosa is a very large palm with deeply segmented palmate leaves and rounded petioles. In habitat, this dioecious palm grows 15 foot wide leaves on petioles 30 feet long. The stems can reach 80 feet tall. Its natural range is wet areas in Northern South America east of the Andes and also reaching into Trinidad. It usually grows in permanently swampy areas. This palm provides food and nesting sites for Macaws (See photo on back cover). Fish, turtles, tortoises, agoutis, peccares, deer, pacas, and iguanas also eat its fruit. I recently attended a meeting of the South Florida Palm Society and it was mentioned that Mauritia did not grow in South Florida. I knew the speaker was not aware of the fine specimens growing at Richard Moyroud’s Mesozoic Landscapes Nursery in Palm Beach County. The nursery is located near Hypoluxo Road west of Rt. 441 – not considered a warm location. I saw these palms planted at his nursery several years ago when I went out there to purchase some native plants. I heard reports that Richard’s Mauritia palms survived our record cold winter, so I called Richard to get a status report. He invited me to come out to the nursery to see for myself. He has specimens growing in the nursery and in a private 3 acre swamp garden located behind the Mauritia flexuosa planted in Richard nursery which is off limits to his customers. This was a rare Moyroud’s garden opportunity to have Richard lead me on a tour of his swamp garden. -

Paragominas, Pará, Brazil ABSTRACT This study aimed to determine whether antioxidant enzymes are efficient to control the oxidative stress and consequent cell damages on leaves and roots in Euterpe oleracea plants exposed to water deficiency. This study was assembled under an experimental design completely randomized with two water conditions (water deficit and control) combined by four evaluation dates (0, 6, 12, and 18 days). Progressive water deficit promoted significant increases in electrolyte leakage and glutathione in both tissue types, and hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde were increased in the leaf. Antioxidant enzyme activities showed similar behaviours, with initial increases and subsequent decreases. Our results revealed that the cell damage observed in leaves and roots was induced by multiple effects related to overproduction of oxidant compounds, such as hydrogen peroxide, and by insufficient CAT, APX, and GPX activities in E. oleracea plants exposed to progressive water deficit. (Acai-do-Amazonas) has been investigated with the aim of sustainability. The palm that is mainly used for basic nutrition of local populations, could also form the basis for models of self-sustained technological and industrial development. The extractive exploitation mainly in riverside communities, where its use is essential in food, it presents insufficient to attend a business model in isolated communities. Therefore, the study was based on obtaining knowledge and its potential applicability in the production of seedling, by increasing levels of irradiance in order to evaluate its growth in diameter, height and number of leaves. In the analysis of growth in different irradiation levels E. precatoria Mart. showed no significant difference in height, the diameter had high development in seedlings subjected to higher levels of irradiance and the number of leaves was higher in the environment with lower irradiance index. -

In the past its seeds were consumed by the inhabitants of the town of Guaduas, Cundinamarca, although currently its use is less frequent. To assess the productive potential of this palm, we studied its phenology, biometric parameters, and fruit productivity in a forest relict in Guaduas. Field work was carried out between April 2016 and March 2017. The reproductive cycle of this species lasted approximately 12 and a half months from bud to fruit ripening. Although bud production occurred throughout the year, it increased during periods of greatest rainfall. Flowering peaks occurred towards the end of the rainy season and fruits ripened towards the period of low rainfall. We found a positive correlation between the number of leaves in the crown and the production of reproductive structures (rs = 0.447, p = 0.004). -
