Tyrianpurple (Greek: πορφύρα,porphyra ,: purpura ),alsoknownas royalpurple or imperialpurple ,isa purple dyeusedbytheancientPhoeniciansinthecityofTyre.

Thedyeconsistsofamucussecretionofthehypobranchialglandofamediumsizedpredatorysea,themarine gastropodMurexbrandaris ,commonlycalledthespinydyemurex,aspeciesinthefamily,themurexor rockshells.

Innaturetheusethesecretionaspartoftheirpredatorybehaviour,butthesnailalsosecretesthissubstance whenitispokedorphysicallyattacked. CertainotherspecieswithinthefamilyMuricidae(e.g. Purpurapatula fromthewesternAtlantic)canalso produceasimilarsubstancewhichturnsintoanenduringpurpledyewhenexposedtosunlight.

ThePhoeniciansalsomadea purple dye,called royalblue or hyacinthpurple ,whichwasmadefroma closelyrelatedspeciesofmarinesnail,called Murex (or Hexaplex ) trunculus ,theBandeddyemurex.

Tyrianpurplewasexpensive:thefourthcenturyBChistorianTheopompusreported,"Purpleforfetchedits weightinsilveratColophon"inAsiaMinor.

6,6'dibromoindigo,themajorcomponentofTyrianpurple

Thefast,nonfadingdyewasanitemofluxurytrade,prizedbyRomans,whousedittocolourceremonialrobes.Itis believedthattheintensityofthepurpleimproved,ratherthanfaded,asthedyedclothaged.PlinytheElder describedtheprocessoftwoinhisNatural.

“ ...theTyrianhue...isconsideredofthebestqualitywhenithasexactlythecolourofclottedblood,andis ofablackishhuetothesight,butofashiningappearancewhenhelduptothelight;henceitisthatwefind Homerspeakingof"purpleblood." ”

ArchaeologicaldatafromTyreindicatethatthesnailswerecollectedinlargevatsandlefttodecompose.This producedahideousstenchthatwasactuallymentionedbyancientauthors.Notmuchisknownaboutthe subsequentsteps,andtheactualancientmethodformassproducingthetwomurexdyeshasnotyetbeen successfullyreconstructed;thisspecial"blackishclottedblood"colour,whichwasprizedaboveallothers,isbelieved tobeachievedbydoubledippingthecloth,onceintheindigodyeof H.trunculus andonceinthepurplereddyeof M.brandaris .

TheRomanmythographerJuliusPollux,writinginthesecondcenturyBC,asserted( Onomasticon I,45–49)thatthe purpledyewasfirstdiscoveredbyHeracles,orrather,byhisdog,whosemouthwasstainedpurplefromchewingon snailsalongthecoastoftheLevant.Recently,thearchaeologicaldiscoveryofsubstantialnumbersofMurexshells onsuggeststhattheMinoansmayhavepioneeredtheextractionofImperialpurplecenturiesbeforethe Tyrians.DatingfromcolocatedpotterysuggeststhedyemayhavebeenproducedduringtheMiddleMinoanperiod inthe20th–18thcenturyBC.ThemainchemicalconstituentoftheTyriandyewasdiscoveredbyPaulFriedländerin 1909tobe 6,6′dibromoindigo ,asubstancethathadpreviouslybeensynthesizedin1903.However,ithasnever beensynthesizedcommercially.

ThetruecolourofTyrianpurple,likemosthighchroma,cannotbeaccuratelydisplayedonacomputer display,norareancientreportsentirelyconsistent,buttheseswatchesgiveanindicationofthelikelyrangeinwhich itappeared:
