The Grunwald Trail
n the Grunwald fi elds thousands of soldiers stand opposite each other. Hidden below the protec- tive shield of their armour, under AN INVITATION Obanners waving in the wind, they hold for an excursion along long lances. Horses impatiently tear their bridles and rattle their hooves. Soon the the Grunwald Trail iron regiments will pounce at each other, to clash in a deadly battle And so it hap- pens every year, at the same site knights from almost the whole of Europe meet, reconstructing events which happened over six hundred years ago. It is here, on the fi elds between Grunwald, Stębark and Łodwigowo, where one of the biggest battles of Medieval Europe took place on July . The Polish and Lithuanian- Russian army, led by king Władysław Jagiełło, crushed the forces of the Teutonic Knights. On the battlefi eld, knights of the order were killed, together with their chief – the great Master Ulrich von Jungingen. The Battle of Grunwald, a triumph of Polish and Lithuanian weapons, had become the symbol of power of the common monarchy. When fortune abandoned Poland and the country was torn apart by the invaders, reminiscence of the battle became the inspiration for generations remembering the past glory and the fi ght for national independence. Even now this date is known to almost every Pole, and the annual re- enactment of the battle enjoys great popularity and attracts thousands of spectators. In Stębark not only the museum and the battlefi eld are worth visiting but it is also worthwhile heading towards other places related to the great battle with the Teutonic Knights order. -

IT's TIME to DIE by Krzysztof Zanussi
IT’S TIME TO DIE by Krzysztof Zanussi translated by Anna Piwowarska // Stephen Davies 1 INTRODUCTION The grim title of this book originates from an anecdote and I ask you to treat it as a joke. I don’t intend to die soon or persuade anyone to relocate to the afterworld. But a certain era is dying before our very eyes and if someone is very attached to it, they should take my words to heart. This is what this book is to be about. But first, about that anecdote. It comes from a great actor, Jerzy Leszczynski. For me, a fifty-something-year-old, this surname is still very much alive. I saw Jerzy in a few roles in the ‘Polish Theatre’ just after the war; I also saw him in many pre-war films (after the war I think he only acted in ‘Street Boundary’). He was an actor from those pre-war years: handsome, endowed with a wonderful appearance and a beautiful voice. He played kings, military commanders, warlords and this is how the audiences loved him. After the war, he acted in radio plays – he had beautiful pre-war diction and of course he pronounced the letter ‘ł’ and he didn't swallow his vowels. Apart from this, he was known for his excellent manners, which befitted an actor who played kings and military commanders. When the time of the People’s Republic came, the nature of the main character that was played out on stage changed. The recruitment of actors also changed: plebeian types were sought after - 'bricklaying teams' and 'girls on tractors who conquered the spring'. -

History of the Crusades. Episode 311. The Baltic Crusades. The Lithuanian Conflict Part XVI. The Hunger War. Hello again. Last time we saw the Marshall of the Teutonic Order Michael Kuchmeister decide to remove Grand Master Heinrich von Plauen from his leadership position, a move which Michael Kuchmeister calculated would bring an end to the recent aggression shown by the Order towards the Kingdom of Poland, and herald the dawn of a new age of peace in the region. Unfortunately though, the move didn't herald the dawn of a new age of peace in the region. When the new Grand Master Michael Kuchmeister met with King Jogaila of Poland, he found him resistant to all reasonable offers of peace, and the new Grand Master reluctantly formed the conclusion that the Teutonic Order needed to prepare to go to war against Poland. The belligerent moves then made by Grand Master Michael Kuchmeister failed spectacularly, as a large combined Polish and Lithuanian army invaded Prussia, retraced the route it had taken prior to the Battle of Tannenberg, then turned northwards towards the Prussian coastline. When we left last week's episode, the Tartar fighters which formed part of the Lithuanian army were menacing the local population, raping, pillaging, murdering, and destroying anything in their path, while Grand Master Michael Kuchmeister watched on from a distance, powerless to stop them. Now, when the Polish and Lithuanian armies invaded Prussia in July of 1414, the annual harvest was just about to commence. Across Prussia, grains were beginning to be collected from the fields, storehouses were starting to fill up with food for the next winter, and millers and bakers were kept busy turning the newly-harvested grain into flour and bread. -
