Visit to Prasat commune, Varin district

1. Profile of Prasat Commune

Prasat commune is one of 5 communes in Varin district. It located in north-west of and also with 73 kilo meter road distance from Siem Reap provincial town. Prasat commune borders with Varin, Srae Khvav of Chum district, Svay Sar, and Srei Snom commune of Srei Snom district of . This commune consists of 5 villages such as Vien, Kab Dai, Kanchorn Run, Prasat, and Tuneap Svay village with 835 families, 104 women headed families, and 3,949 populations in which 1,946 are women.

In 2004, there were a lot of land mine in the commune compound and the road was very bad that we had to spend more times up to 2 or 3 hours to reach Svay Sar commune. Meanwhile, Padek started working there with supporting from Japanese Fund for Poverty Reduction (JFPR) through CARE organization on the project of Community Based Livelihood Enhancement (CBLE). Due to CBLE project, Padek had been working in 5 villages of Prasat commune (All villages of Prasat) with utilizing Padek Integrated Community Development Model (PICDM).

In 2005, Padek was selected to be a partner with Ministry of Rural Development (MRD) to implement the project of (NRDP) in 5 villages of Prasat commune and PICDM was also been used for the project implementation.

Main livelihood

Most of Prasat community people are paddy rice farmers (95%). Besides of the rice cultivation, they go to forest to collect non timber product for producing handicraft product. And also they have other kinds of occupation like animal raising, vegetable growing motor repairer, glossary seller, some go to Siem Reap town to sell labor as construction worker, and some go to Thailand, especially men, for also construction workers.

Challenge for Development

• People those who stay far from the source of water always meet water problem (Lack of clean water). • In dry season, there are few people growing vegetable because of not enough water to irrigate their home garden. • After harvesting, community people migrate outside the commune to the provincial town for income generation, especially, migration to Thailand to sell labor as construction workers. • Poor and Ultra poor people have little agriculture land

1. Svay Sar Commune Profile

Svay Sar commune is one of 5 communes in Varin district. It located in north-west of siem reap province and also with 65 kilo meter road distance from Siem Reap provincial town. Svay Sar borders with Lvea Kraing, Srae Khvav, Kouk Dong, Daun Peng, and Prasat commune. This commune consists of 6 villages such as Kambor, Svay Sar, Russey Touch, Russey Thom, Char, and O village with 850 families, 85 women headed families, and 4,632 population in which 2,233 are women.

Visit to Tasom commune

1. Tasom Commune Profile

Introduction

Tasom commune is one of 5 communes in Angkor Chum district. It located in north- west of siem reap province and also with 55 kilo meter road distance from Siem Reap provincial town. Tasom commune borders with Char Chhuk, Nokor Pheas, Daun Peng, and Trey Gnor commune of Puok distict. This commune consists of 13 villages with 1,678 families, 226 women headed families, and 9,226 populations in which 4,776 are women.

Padek started working in Tasom commune since 2007 with supporting from Oxfam Novib to implement the project of Integrated Community Development in a whole commune in which Padek strategies, called PICDM, have also been used for project implementation.
