I The books under review are only six of the many which have recently come out and deal, declaratively and explicitly, with the “Jewish Diaspora” of the Graeco-Roman period. The new volume of CHJ, which appeared 15 years after its articles were written,1 con­ tains an article by Η. Hegermann specifically on ‘The Diaspora in the Hellenistic Age” (115-66), and the other 17 articles in the volume were commissioned and written accord­ ing to standard dichotomies: Palestine/Diaspora, Greek/Semitic, politics/religion. Since the volume was first conceived, these last two dichotomies have come under increasing scrutiny and methodological challenge; the first has not.2 Α.Τ. Kraabel, the honorand of Diaspora Jews and Judaism, has devoted his career to the evaluation of “questionable as­ sumptions”3 about the “Jewish Diaspora” — starting and ending, it seems, in Asia Minor, particularly Sardis — and the outdated appearance of CHJ II is partly due to the authors’ inability to consider his challenge to the views that Diaspora Jews were syncretistic, zeal­ One of the main editors and six of eight advisory editors are no longer alive.

MEINARDU S Athens, Greece Some months ago, I revisited the island of Patmos and the sites of the seven churches to which letters are addressed in the second and third chap- ters of the book of Revelation. What follows is a report on such Christian remains as have survived and an indication of the various traditions which have grown up at the eight locations, where, as at so many other places in the Orthodox and Latin world, piety has sought tangible localization. I set out from Piraeus and sailed to the island of Patmos, off the Turkish coast, which had gained its significance because of the enforced exile of God's servant John (Rev. 1:1, 9) and from the acceptance of the Revelation in the NT canon. From the tiny port of Skala, financial and tourist center of Patmos, the road ascends to the 11th century Greek Orthodox monastery of St. John the Theologian. Half way to this mighty fortress monastery, I stopped at the Monastery of the Apocalypse, which enshrines the "Grotto of the Revelation." Throughout the centuries pilgrims have come to this site to receive blessings. When Pitton de Tournefort visited Patmos in 1702, the grotto was a poor hermitage administered by the bishop of Samos. The abbot presented de Tournefort with pieces of rock from the grotto, assuring him that they could expel evil spirits and cure diseases. Nowadays, hundreds of western tourists visit the grotto daily, especially during the summer, and are shown those traditional features which are related in one way or another with the vision of John.

  • Religious Patronage and Mosaic Donor Inscriptions at Sardis and Anemurium
    Religious Patronage and Mosaic Donor Inscriptions at Sardis and Anemurium The cities of Sardis and Anemurium (the first the capital of the Roman province of Lydia and an important political center, the latter a marginal city on the coast of Cilicia that flourished between the first and seventh centuries CE) differ so drastically in character that scholars have neglected to appreciate how similar cultural realities affected and shaped the Jewish and Christian communities in both cities during the fourth and fifth centuries CE. We can gain a deeper understanding of the links between these seemingly disparate religious communities by comparing the mosaic donor inscriptions uncovered at the synagogue at Sardis with the Christian donor inscriptions discovered in churches at Anemurium. This paper argues that in periods of order following times of decline and uncertainty, the Jewish and Christian citizens of Sardis and Anemurium combatted uncertainty by using religious patronage to legitimize themselves as members of their communities and to validate the synagogue and churches as civic centers. Although scholars have published the donor inscriptions at Sardis and Anemurium in collections (Seager 1974 and Kroll 2001; Russell 1987 and Campbell 1998), little work has been done to consider the donor inscriptions as representative of larger movements within the cities’ communities (Trebilco 1991), and no scholar has addressed the similarities between these donor inscriptions, especially in their language and placement within the synagogue at Sardis and churches at Anemurium. Work on the synagogue has focused on tracing the building’s phases of constructions to determine its place within the history of the Jewish Diaspora and of the city’s Jewish community (Seager 1972).

This dissertation examines how this ability changed and grew over time, between 60 B.C. and A.D. 68, as seen through coin production. Earlier scholars assumed that the mint at Rome always produced coinage for the entire empire, or they have focused on a sudden change under Augustus. Recent advances in catalogs, documentation of coin hoards, and metallurgical analyses allow a fuller picture to be painted. This dissertation integrates the previously overlooked coinages of Asia Minor, Syria, and Egypt with the denarius of the Latin West. In order to measure the development of the Roman state’s infrastructural power, this dissertation combines the anthropological ideal types of hegemonic and territorial empires with the numismatic method of detecting coordinated activity at multiple mints. The Roman state exercised its power over various regions to different extents, and it used its power differently over time. During the Republic, the Roman state had low infrastructural minting capacity.

    arts Article Art and Identity in Late Antique Synagogues of the Roman-Byzantine Diaspora Noa Yuval-Hacham Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies, Jerusalem 9370610, Israel; [email protected] Received: 30 October 2019; Accepted: 5 December 2019; Published: 10 December 2019 Abstract: Late antiquity witnessed the increased construction of synagogues in the Jewish diaspora of the Roman-Byzantine world. Although not large in number, these synagogues were impressive and magnificent structures that were certainly conspicuous in the urban landscape, especially when constructed within a central location. This paper focuses on mosaic carpets discovered at these synagogues, to discern their distinguishing features through a comparative perspective. Two focal points are examined: on the one hand, local Roman-Byzantine mosaics in civic and religious buildings, and on the other hand, Jewish mosaics carpets in Palestinian synagogues. This comparison reveals several clear distinctions between the Jewish diasporic mosaic carpets and the other two groups of mosaics, that broaden our understanding of the unique nature of Jewish art in the Roman-Byzantine diaspora in particular, and of Jewish diasporic identity in late antiquity in general. Keywords: mosaic carpets; Jewish diaspora; late antiquity; figural images; geometric patterns; Palestinian synagogues The artistic remains from late antique synagogues are rich and fascinating: most were discovered in dozens of Palestinian synagogues, in stone carvings and mosaic carpets. In this article, I will examine a smaller and less explored branch of this art: that of the Diaspora synagogues, built outside of the provinces of Palestine and Arabia, with a focus on the medium of mosaic carpets.1 Uncovered in archaeological excavations, these synagogues comprise an extremely small group of buildings—15 in all (as opposed to about 120 synagogues uncovered in the Land of Israel).
