Pastoral Reflection By Yvonne Rodriguez

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! This is the day the Lord has made, let us be glad and rejoice in it!

Today, as we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ, we are doing so on the most important date on the Catholic calendar. We have prayed, sacrificed, and fasted for the past forty days as we prepared for his death and resurrection. Francis tells us…. “The Gospel of Easter is very clear: we need to go back there, to see Jesus risen, and to become witnesses of his Resurrection. This is not to go back in time; it is not a kind of nostalgia. It is returning to our first love, in order to receive the fire which Jesus has kindled in the world and to bring that fire to all people, to the very ends of the earth.” As the Lenten season ends, keep the fire burning in our hearts and in our bellies that has enabled us to make sacrifices this past season and bring that fire to all people as asks.

As we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord, let us do so with prayers for those that are no longer with us and are not able to celebrate this mass with us. My father will celebrate his birthday in heaven on Thursday of this week. Happy birthday, dad, and a very blessed and Happy Easter to all!

Introduction and History

It would go without saying that in speaking to my fellow Catholics would be like preaching to the choir regarding the importance of a quality Catholic education for our children. Now whether we could afford to send them to Catholic School, that’s a different story. Wishing and doing are two different things, and most of us clearly understand what that means. While we all understand that in making the supreme sacrifices to care for and nurture our children, it can become nearly, if not impossible to stretch the budget-it will only go so far.

Now this is not to excuse us from the responsibility of providing a solid moral foundation that our children desperately need to develop a sound moral compass. This will certainly aid them to survive in a harsh environment that the world will subject them to-it’s a cruel reality. We see that reality everyday, all around us, without a doubt. Nonetheless, we still must provide that solid foundation one way or another; otherwise we risk an eternity for them.

I personally benefited from a Catholic Education, beginning with the 2nd grade, all the way through my first year in . I was fortunate to have parents who were happily caught up in the greatest generation’s sudden rise of the middle class. This was resulting from World War II’s devastating negative impact worldwide, and the demand for rapid repatriation from that devastation. The rise of the large industrial complex in this country brought about significant economic growth and prosperity for the U. S. Consequently my parents could afford to send me to a Catholic School.

In looking back, the constant exposure that I experienced in receiving a well-balanced curriculum, and more importantly the inclusion of the moral values of our Catholic Faith proved to be invaluable. It provided me with the means of properly placing that balanced education in the correct order of priority. This turned out to be an enormous advantage later in my life in order to safely handle the onslaught awaiting me in the secular world.

I firmly believe and I am confident that most American Catholics will agree as well, that Catholic Education, not only in the U.S. but world wide, has had an enormous impact on Human society. And along with other Christian denominations have together provided a tremendous boost to the moral fiber of the world. This moral fiber has held us together so far. However there is still a lot of work to get done, the assault from the evil in the world is so ever present, therefore we must continue the good fight.

Early in the 19th century the need for the establishment of Catholic Schools in the United States became apparent and regardless of the reasons for that need; whether because our inherent mission has always been of evangelization, or the pressures of anti-Catholic attitudes, or perhaps attributing to the tribal behavior of societal enclaves, Catholicism is now generally accepted as to having had a critical and significant impact on the development of the American culture.

I don’t I have to remind you, but I will anyway, that Catholic schools exist to assure us that our children will in fact receive a wholesome well-balanced education, including all of the standard disciplines that are contained within the overall educational process. More important than that, is the need for the standard curriculum be intertwined with the teachings of the Church and of Jesus Christ.

Our children must be introduced to Jesus early in their lives so that they have the opportunity to grow in their love for Him. Obviously through their exposure to the catechesis, celebration of the Sacraments, and due diligence paid to the studies of worldly things, they can gain a deeper appreciation for creation and the Creator.

As the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has written, "Catholic schools afford the fullest and best opportunity to realize the fourfold purpose of Christian education, namely, to provide an atmosphere in which the Gospel message is proclaimed, community in Christ is experienced, service to our sisters and brothers is the norm, and thanksgiving and worship of God is cultivated."

As the world faces an ever-increasing secularization, Catholic schools provide an opportunity for a safe haven and an atmosphere that permits the Gospel to be shared with all children, and an emphasis as to the responsibility and the vital role that parents must play in their education including religion.

To believe in something or someone greater than one self is crucial to our spiritual well being-it points to a deep rooted need or drive to connect, to be part of something bigger than oneself, and to be at peace with who we are and what we will become. To learn and to know is the essence of, or the reason for, our existence. GOD has always known therefore we exist.

Youth Spectacular 2018 This year at St. Mary’s , the theme was “Disciples!” The ultimate purpose of the Youth Spectacular is to transform our young Catholics into the driving force of the New Evangelization in their homes, their schools, parishes and communities. We want for our youth to be the present Church in our midst and to seriously consider priestly or religious life and continue to develop leaders that will build a Culture of Encounter as joyful disciples in Jesus Christ. Our prayers are that our youth will choose to be the Disciples they are called to be and to bring others closer to our Catholic Faith so they too will choose to be Disciples. Commissioned by Jesus Christ. Mt. 28: 19-20 Est. 33 AD
