All across the country, Catholic colleges and universities are actively working to reduce their carbon emissions and energy consumption, integrate sustainability into their curricula, and foster ecological awareness across their campus communities. Yet while many Catholic schools have successfully taken steps to integrate sustainability into their institutions, we believe more can to be done to ensure that these efforts are thoroughly grounded in Catholic mission and identity. In the late 1980’s Steve Yzerman was a perennial top scorer in the National Hockey League. In spite of that, the Red Wings couldn’t win in the playoffs. That was until their coach asked Yzerman to change his playing style. This change, while costing him individual statistics, would turn him into a defensive superstar and transform the Red Wings into Stanley Cup Champs. As a member of TEAM CATHOLIC it isn’t about individual accolades but is about the team. We want all people to know that they are valued and that they are part of this diverse and sometimes quirky family we call the Church.

LONERGAN ON THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY Msgr. Richard M. Liddy In 1951 Bernard Lonergan wrote an article entitled "The Role of a Catholic University in the Modern World." Originally published in French, it can be found in Lonergan's Collection.1 Published at the same time he was working on his magnum opus, Insight, it reflects the basic thrust of that major work. Some years later, in 1959, in a series of lectures in Cincinnati on the philosophy of education Lonergan touched again upon the subject of the Catholic university.2 Here he adverted to the fact that of its very nature the whole immense Catholic school system is rooted in a "supernaturalist vision" that is in conflict with the dominant philosophies of education of modern times. The fact is that we have a Catholic educational system, with primary schools, high schools, colleges and universities. That is the concrete fact and it exists because it is Catholic.3 What Lonergan finds lacking is a philosophical vision capable of defending the existence of the Catholic school system. Educational theorists tend to be divided into "modernists" whose appeal is to human experience and scientific verification and "traditionalists" who appeal to immutable truths transcending scientific verification.

Kawentel, Ph.D., University of Notre Dame Foreword Building on A National Study on Catholic Campus Ministry, 2017, this Qualitative Study on Catholic Campus Ministry sought to deepen our understanding of the data previously gathered. Through interviews, the research team was able to address some questions that emerged in the October 2017 symposium, where participants worked to unpack the quantitative data. For exam- ple, the quantitative survey raised questions about how the terms “vocation” or “evangelization” were being interpreted. The interview process offered greater insight into how people were inter- preting various questions. The interviews also allowed campus ministers to describe concepts like vocation, evangelization, or their relationship with Jesus, in their own words. As we come to understand their perspective more fully, we recognize a greater unity of purpose within the diver- sity of campus ministry. The fruits of the 45 interviews, yielded additional insights on topics like blended ministries and parish bridging. The perspective gained through the qualitative study will help to strengthen campus ministry for the task at hand: the engagement and empowerment of women and men of faith on college campuses.

Villanova University This article, the first in a series of three articles surveying the contributions of the religious to U.S. Catholic schooling, focuses upon their contributions during the 18th and 19th centuries. ith the colonists establishing a life for themselves on North American Wsoil, the Spanish Franciscans commissioned friars to minister in the New World. In 1606, the first band of friars opened the first Catholic school in the New World, located in St. Augustine, Florida, dedicating it "to teach children Christian doctrine, reading and writing" (Kealey, 1989). Not long afterward, other religious communities followed in these pioneering Franciscans' footsteps. Over the next 294 years—an era during which the colonies revolted against the crown to become the United States of America, citizens fought a civil war to abolish slavery, and millions of Catholic immigrants journeyed from the Old World to the New World—the successors of these pioneering religious contributed mightily to establishing Catholic schooling in the United States. The religious not only staffed schools, they educated the poor and marginalized, solidified the schools' institutional purpose, and provided students with effective values-based instruction. Always a popular day, the Summit includes a great speaker, Mass, lunch, and fantastic giveaways. NEW DYM ORIENTATION –August At the beginning of each school year we have an orientationn for new DYMs to introduce them to diocesan policy, share ways the OYCYAM is able to support them in their ministry, and discuss events for youth. Our goal is to help DYMs who are new to the Diocese get started on the right foot and make decisions that allow them to remain effective in youth ministry for years to come. DEEPER WATERS –November | March In the fall and spring, we will gather on a Tuesday evening for Mass, dinner, and a guest speaker who addresses topics relevant to DYMs and volunteers. These are great opportunities for DYMs to have volunteers trained in specifi c areas of youth ministry. IN-SERVICE Once a year DYMs gather for a full day focused on a particular topic relevant to youth ministry. The speakers are often national level presenters and offer the chance to sharpen a specifi c youth ministry skill.
