Herrick, B.S., M.S.E. Marquette University, 2011 Twenty years after Ex Corde Ecclesiae, the papal proclamation that defined the relationship between the Catholic Church and Catholic institutions of higher education, these institutions continue to seek ways to strengthen their Catholic identities. As they do so they are faced with a declining number of religiously vowed men and women available to lead them. An institution‘s history is often linked to the mission of its founding congregation. As members of the congregation become less actively involved, the connection of the institution‘s mission to the founding congregation and their particular charism is likely to be less visibly evident. Additionally, the role of the American university president today is viewed by many to be an almost impossible job. As members of the laity are increasingly assuming the leadership of these institutions, it is important to presidents, their institutions, boards and founding congregations to have a deeper understanding of how the lay president understands the role of supporting and advancing the Catholic mission and how the lay president is prepared to do so. This dissertation provides a broad review of the history of the mission of Catholic institutions of higher education and of the changing role of the American college president, particularly presidents of Catholic institutions. An in depth qualitative study of one current lay president with ten years of service utilizing interviews, observations and artifact/document reviews was conducted. Three major themes emerged from the data: the significance of the president‘s own Catholic identity, his vocation as a Catholic educator, and the intentionality of his leadership for mission specifically. The president‘s preparation revealed that the lay president‘s personal formation as a Catholic and exposure to strong leaders in Catholic education were more critical to his leadership style than theological training or a terminal degree. The president‘s leadership style is also discussed in relationship to the success of the institution he leads and in context with the leadership styles described in Catholic Higher Education: A Culture in Crisis (Morey and Piderit, 2006). i ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Kathy A. The main objective of this research is to highlight the Albanian school buildings through two parallel points of view: an outlookthrough the course of history and analyzed as structures. This article tries to explore the changes that occurred in educational buildings in Albania.Itfocuses on the influences, problems and issues that have emerged, during the several invasions and how these influences have affected the architecture of Albanian’s schools. This analysis is followed by a discussion of the architecture’s development and the typology, standards, structures and shapes of this category of buildings focusing mostly on the last century, trying to fill the gap of history and knowledge for this important group of edifices. LONERGAN ON THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY Msgr. Richard M. Liddy In 1951 Bernard Lonergan wrote an article entitled "The Role of a Catholic University in the Modern World." Originally published in French, it can be found in Lonergan's Collection.1 Published at the same time he was working on his magnum opus, Insight, it reflects the basic thrust of that major work. Some years later, in 1959, in a series of lectures in Cincinnati on the philosophy of education Lonergan touched again upon the subject of the Catholic university.2 Here he adverted to the fact that of its very nature the whole immense Catholic school system is rooted in a "supernaturalist vision" that is in conflict with the dominant philosophies of education of modern times. The fact is that we have a Catholic educational system, with primary schools, high schools, colleges and universities. That is the concrete fact and it exists because it is Catholic.3 What Lonergan finds lacking is a philosophical vision capable of defending the existence of the Catholic school system. Educational theorists tend to be divided into "modernists" whose appeal is to human experience and scientific verification and "traditionalists" who appeal to immutable truths transcending scientific verification.

Yocum This dissertation considers a spectrum of five distinct approaches that mid-twentieth century neo-Thomist Catholic thinkers utilized when engaging with the tradition of modern scientific psychology: a critical approach, a reformulation approach, a synthetic approach, a particular [Jungian] approach, and a personalist approach. This work argues that mid-twentieth century neo-Thomists were essentially united in their concerns about the metaphysical principles of many modern psychologists as well as in their worries that these same modern psychologists had a tendency to overlook the transcendent dimension of human existence. This work shows that the first four neo-Thomist thinkers failed to bring the traditions of neo-Thomism and modern psychology together to the extent that they suggested purely theoretical ways of reconciling them.

All across the country, Catholic colleges and universities are actively working to reduce their carbon emissions and energy consumption, integrate sustainability into their curricula, and foster ecological awareness across their campus communities. Yet while many Catholic schools have successfully taken steps to integrate sustainability into their institutions, we believe more can to be done to ensure that these efforts are thoroughly grounded in Catholic mission and identity.     364 ARTICLES U.S. CATHOLIC SCHOOLS AND THE RELIGIOUS WHO SERVED IN THEM CONTRIBUTIONS IN THE 18TH AND 19TH CENTURIES RICHARD M. JACOBS. O.S.A. Villanova University This article, the first in a series of three articles surveying the contributions of the religious to U.S. Catholic schooling, focuses upon their contributions during the 18th and 19th centuries. ith the colonists establishing a life for themselves on North American Wsoil, the Spanish Franciscans commissioned friars to minister in the New World. In 1606, the first band of friars opened the first Catholic school in the New World, located in St. Augustine, Florida, dedicating it "to teach children Christian doctrine, reading and writing" (Kealey, 1989). Not long afterward, other religious communities followed in these pioneering Franciscans' footsteps. Over the next 294 years—an era during which the colonies revolted against the crown to become the United States of America, citizens fought a civil war to abolish slavery, and millions of Catholic immigrants journeyed from the Old World to the New World—the successors of these pioneering religious contributed mightily to establishing Catholic schooling in the United States. The religious not only staffed schools, they educated the poor and marginalized, solidified the schools' institutional purpose, and provided students with effective values-based instruction.
