[email protected]. Introduction In 2013 Pope Francis issued his first apostolic exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium, on Catholic education. Evangelii Gaudium outlined Pope Francis’ vision for Catholic education to be an answer to secularization and “deterioration of ethics” in society (Pope Francis, 2013, para. 64). He continued to say “Catholic schools…are a most valuable resource for the evangelization of culture” (Pope Francis, 2013, para. 134). Various organizations in the United States echo the Pope’s vision. The United States Council of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), for example, asserts that the purpose of Catholic schools is to provide a “sound education, rooted in the Gospel message, the Person of Jesus Christ, and rich in the cherished traditions and liturgical practices of our faith” (United States Council of Catholic Bishops, 2013, para 2).
