WITHERSPOON & DEBORAH M. FOYLE A root perforation is a mechanical or pathological communication formed between the supporting periodontal apparatus of the tooth and the root canal system. Three broad categories of etiological factors exist and these are procedural mishaps, resorption and caries. The diagnosis, management and repair of root perforations require skill and creative thinking. Unfortunately, much of what has been written on the subject of root perforation repair is unsubstantiated and empirical in nature and contributes little to evidence-based support for any specific repair procedure. However, perforation repair frequently provides a very attractive and frequently successful alternative to extraction of the involved tooth. In recent years, the procedure has become more predictable owing to the development of new materials, techniques and procedures. Venn2 1NRC Herzberg Astronomy and Astrophysics, 5071 West Saanich Road, Victoria, B.C., Canada, V9E 2E7 2Physics & Astronomy Department, University of Victoria, 3800 Finnerty Rd, Victoria, B.C., Canada, V8P 5C2 ABSTRACT A new derivation of systemic proper motions of Milky Way satellites is presented, and applied to 59 confirmed or candidate dwarf galaxy satellites using Gaia Data Release 2. This constitutes all known Milky Way dwarf galaxies (and likely candidates) as of May 2020 except the Magellanic Clouds, the Canis Major and Hydra 1 stellar overdensities, and the tidally disrupting Bootes III and Sagittarius dwarf galaxies. We derive systemic proper motions for the first time for Indus 1, DES J0225+0304, Cetus 2, Pictor 2 and Leo T, but note that the latter three rely on photometry that is of poorer quality than for the rest of the sample. We cannot resolve a signal for Bootes 4, Cetus 3, Indus 2, Pegasus 3, or Virgo 1. Our method is inspired by the maximum likelihood approach of Pace & Li(2019) and examines simultaneously the spatial, color-magnitude, and proper motion distribution of sources. Systemic proper motions are derived without the need to identify confirmed radial velocity members, although the proper motions of these stars, where available, are incorporated into the analysis through a prior on the model. The associated uncertainties on the systemic proper motions are on average a factor of ∼ 1:4 smaller than existing literature values. -

Bibliografia, questa di Marti, che già nel 1995, quando egli aveva compiuto gli ottanta anni di età, aveva raggiunto il numero di 969 scritti, che egli ha continuato ad aumentare nei due lustri susseguenti tramite un’attività di investigatore profondo, perspicace e diligente e che arriva dunque, come leggiamo nella bibliografia del presente volume (pagg. 175-81), a 1064 voci: un elenco, questo, già superato dato che il volume è stato consegnato alla stampa il 25 marzo 2005 e dato che il professor Mario Marti è tuttora impegnato su vari fronti della storia letteraria d’Italia. -

The bulk density of an asteroid informs us about its interior structure and composition. To constrain the bulk density one needs an estimate for the mass of the asteroid. The mass is estimated by analyzing an asteroid’s gravitational interaction with another object, such as another asteroid during a close encounter. An estimate for the mass has typically been obtained with linearized least- squares methods despite the fact that this family of methods is not able to properly describe non-Gaussian parameter distributions. In addition, the uncertainties reported for asteroid masses in the literature are sometimes inconsistent with each other and suspected to be unrealistically low. Aims. We present a Markov-chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm for the asteroid mass estimation problem based on asteroid- asteroid close encounters. We verify that our algorithm works correctly by applying it to synthetic data sets. We then use astrometry available through the Minor Planet Center to estimate masses for a select few example cases and compare our results to results reported in the literature. Methods. Our mass estimation method is based on the robust adaptive Metropolis algorithm that has been implemented into the OpenOrb asteroid orbit computation software. -

As you will see, working with talented teachers at Central Nick developed his passionate interest in a field where he later excelled. And, just as 85 percent of our graduating students do, Nick chose to remain in Connecticut, making extraordinary contributions to the vitality of our state. So too for students such as Maxine Ursery, profiled in this issue as the first Lindgren Fellow. Already making a difference as a teacher when she came to us, she will continue to do so as she becomes an education leader after completing her studies here. In so doing, Ms. Ursery demonstrates how our students benefit from scholarships supported by our generous alumni. You will also meet in this issue the Lindgren brothers—two alumni but all three with lifelong connections to Central. They have followed the wisdom of their parents and have created a legacy for others who, as they say, have “a love and a passion” for education. This all shows that our students’ success is part of a larger process. Others—teachers, loyal and devoted alumni, the citizens of Connecticut—have “invested” in them and made it possible for our students to succeed. But their success when they leave Central and follow their chosen paths brings a truly remarkable return on that investment. -

Nimmo Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, University of California, Santa Cruz Summary Mercury has a remarkable number of landforms that express widespread defor- mation of the planet’s crustal materials. Deformation on Mercury can be broadly described as either distributed or basin-localized. The distributed deformation on Mercury is dominantly compressional. Crustal shortening is reflected by three land- forms, lobate scarps, high-relief ridges, and wrinkle ridges. Lobate scarps are the expression of surface-breaking thrust faults and are widely distributed on Mercury. High-relief ridges are closely related to lobate scarps and appear to be formed by high-angle reverse faults. Wrinkle ridges are landforms that reflect folding and thrust faulting and are found largely in smooth plains material within and exterior to the Caloris basin. The Caloris basin has an array of basin-localized tectonic features. Basin-concentric wrinkle ridges in the interior smooth plains material are very similar to those found in lunar mascon basins. The Caloris basin also has the only clear evidence of broad-scale, extensional deformation. Extension of the interior plains materials is expressed as a complex pattern of basin-radial and basin-concentric graben. The graben crosscut the wrinkle ridges in Caloris, suggesting that they are among the youngest tectonic features on Mercury.
