The Impact of the COVID-19 Outbreak on the Welsh Language December 2020
Welsh Parliament Culture, Welsh Language and Communications Committee The impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on the Welsh language December 2020 The Culture, Welsh Language and Communications Committee is looking at the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on the areas within its remit. Between 24 September and 20 October the Committee received written evidence and heard from organisations teaching and promoting the Welsh language at national and community level. We are grateful to all those who contributed to this inquiry, the organisations and individuals are listed in the Annexe to this report. This short report summarises the evidence on the impact of the pandemic on the Welsh language. Recommendation 1. The Welsh Government should ensure that short term reallocations of Welsh Language funding, due to the pandemic, do not result in longer term funding allocations which could detract from achieving the aims of Cymraeg 2050. The Welsh Government should reinstate the budget allocations for supporting and promoting the Welsh language in full, as soon as possible. Recommendation 2. The Welsh Government should ensure that jobs that support and promote the Welsh language across Wales are central to its economic recovery plan. Recommendation 3. The Welsh Government should review and update its Cymraeg 2050 action plan and the Welsh language technology action plan to reflect the rapid change to online Welsh language learning, activities and cultural events that has facilitated its use at home and grown interest in the language abroad. www.senedd.wales Recommendation 4. The Welsh Government should make training available for organisations and individuals to ensure they make the most of online opportunities to promote the use of Welsh and support their members. -

Delivering Capital Ambition Cardiff Council Corporate Plan 2020-23 Mae’r ddogfen hon ar gael yn Gymraeg hefyd / WORKING FOR CARDIFF, This document is also available in Welsh WORKING FOR YOU Leader’s Introduction 2020-2023 As my Administration enters the second half of its municipal term, we have reaffirmed our Capital Ambition commitments to create a greener, fairer and stronger capital city. This plan describes in detail how we will deliver our Capital Ambition programme. With the UK having now left the European Union, the plan sets out a positive and progressive response, with the Council investing alongside the private sector in a programme of major regeneration projects, placing a relentless focus on job creation and attracting inward investment. This work will include completing Central Square and the city centre’s transformation as a business district, launching the next phase of Cardiff Bay’s regeneration and delivering a new Industrial Strategy for the east of the city, which will create new jobs in this too often overlooked part of the city. But a strong economy is about much more than simply creating jobs and attracting investment. It is a scandal that many of the poorest communities in Wales – including the one I represent - are less than a stone’s throw away from the nation’s economic centre. And so, through initiatives like the Living Wage City, we will place an equal emphasis on ensuring that the jobs and opportunities created in Cardiff are taken by citizens of all our communities. Education remains our top priority. This plan describes how we will continue to drive up school performance and reduce the attainment gap between children from our most affluent and deprived communities, led by our hundreds of millions pound investment in building new, and improving existing, schools, and our commitment to becoming a Unicef Child Friendly City. -

SUNDAY 28th Euros Childs @National_Elf Euros Childs is a solo artist hailing from Pembrokeshire. Having fronted the band Gorky's Zygotic Mynci from 1991 until their demise in 2004, Euros went solo and released his debut album ‘Chops’ on the Wichita label in 2006, followed by a further 3 albums for the label: ‘Bore Da’, ‘The Miracle Inn’ (both 2007) and ‘Cheer Gone’ (2008). Euros set up his own record label National Elf in 2009 and to date has released 10 solo albums – including last year’s ‘Olion’, ‘Sweetheart’ (2015) ‘Refresh!’ (2016) ‘House Arrest’ (2017). He has toured extensively around the UK in the past 13 years. Sometimes with a band and occasionally alone with a piano. When asked by taxi drivers, hairdressers or distant relatives what kind of music he plays, Euros replies, 'It's pop music with a bit of folk music and thrown in. Category: Arts, Culture or Sport Campaign Company: St Fagans National Museum of History Entry title: Be part of the story of Wales Brief and objectives: Our brief was to celebrate the completion of a £30million redevelopment of St Fagans National Museum of History and encourage visitors to ‘be part of history’. The Museum remained open to the public throughout the 6 year period and although visitor figures dropped below the typical 600,000 a year, there were opportunities for people from all over Wales to get involved. We needed to communicate that over 120 community groups helped to shape the new Museum. And when fully re-opened, we wanted people to share their stories, collections and skills to ensure that St Fagans truly reflected life in Wales. Objectives: 1. Re-launch St Fagans to existing and new audiences as a Museum created with the people of Wales 2. Increase visitor figures and engage with under-represented audiences 3. Communicate the new visitor experience, and encourage participation. The idea, research and planning: St Fagans has always been a museum about the people of Wales. Through the redevelopment, we wanted to shape the future of St Fagans with the people of Wales. Our communications followed the same ethos. We engaged our visitors, partners, media and influencers giving exclusive access to the project, listening to feedback and sharing our messaging through the networks of our 200 partner organisations. These partners were all ambassadors for St Fagans, and champions within their communities. At the beginning of the project, 65% of our users fell into social grades ABC1. -
