Dr Feaelgood Biografia from Canvey Island, Essex, UK collaborzione con Musical Box Britain’s Premier Rhythm and Blues Band! Formati a Canvey Island – Essex nei primi anni ‘70, i Dr Feelgood restano una delle band live rhythm’n’blues più popolari ed eccitanti del mondo. Lo stile puro e senza compromessi delle loro esibizioni è evidente nell’album Stupidity che immediatamente occupa il primo posto nelle classifiche britan- Dr Feaelgood niche, a cui segue un successo globale con una serie di hits incluso “Roxet- te”, “Back in the Night”, “Milk and Alcohol”, “Down at the Doctors”, “She Does it Right”, “Going Back Home” e “See You Later Alligator”, con il quale si sono guadagnati il loro primo disco d’oro. L’attuale line-up è composto dalla sezione ritmica con Kevin Morris alla bat- teria e Phil Mitchell al basso, entrambi da 31 anni nella band, Steve Walwyn alla chitarra da ben 25 anni e il cantante Robert Kane (un tempo parte degli Animals), il più recente membro succeduto al fondatore Lee Brilleaux che appare per l’ultima volta nell’album Down at the Doctors. Una nota particolare va al film di Julien Temple Oil“ City Confi- dential” uscito il 2 febbraio 2010, vincitore di numerosi awards racconta la storia delle band formatesi durante l’era di Wilko Johnson ponendo una certa attenzione sui Dr Feelgood. Maggio 2011 vede il re-mastered di Chess masters originariamente prodotto dalla EMI Records nel 2000, il tributo della band alla Chess Label, casa di alcuni dei più grandi artisti blues del 20° secolo e, il primo album dei Dr Feel- good con Robert alla voce. Quest’anno si presentano con Adventures at the BBC, un doppio album che contiene ben 51 tracce della loro trentennale carriera, a partire dal periodo di Gypie Mayo fino all’attuale line-up, contiene 18 brani inediti, incluso due registrazioni con la grande blues band americana Canned Heat. The early days collaborzione con Musical Box Canvey Island è un improbabile luogo di nascita per una delle migliori R&B band britanniche, il suo spoglio profilo industriale si erge sopra le fredde ac- que della foce del Tamigi escludendolo così da numerose brochure vacan- ziere ma, nel 1960, diventa la casa degli amici Lee Collinson, Chris White e John Sparkes. Il trio condivide un forte interesse per la musica e, come tanti amici dalle idee affini, formano una “skiffle” band che suona incessantemente fuori dai pub e club nell’area locale. Il nome del gruppo cambia velocemente come il line-up ma una profonda svolta arriva il giorno in cui White e Collinson assistono al concerto di Howlin’ Wolf al King’s Head di Romford, dopo il quale Collinson inizia ad imparare a suonare l’armonica. Il tempo passa e continuano a suonare insieme con il nome di The Wild Bunch (noto anche come The Pigboy Charlie Band), White inizia a fre- Dr Feaelgood quentare la Drama School e, con il nome di Chris Fenwick, prende parte come attore in film e famosi programmi TV del tempo. Continuando a soffrire di un instabile line-up, inseguono la possibilità di in- contrare la loro vecchia conoscenza John “Wilko” Wilkinson, che viene invitato ad unirsi a loro; Wilko accetta e si decide di cambiare nome alla band, dopo numerosi suggerimenti “Dr Feelgood” appare il più adatto, essendo anche titolo di un apprezzata versione dell’omonimo brano blues di Johnny Kidd and the Pirates. E così si uniscono al batterista locale John Martin (denominato “The Big Figure”), che li guida in Olan- da con un economico, pericoloso, pulmino di seconda mano. I cinque concerti si rivelano un punto di svolta e, sulla strada del ritorno, si ritrovano tutti d’accordo di aver fatto qualcosa che deve essere inseguito a tutti i costi. Collinson cambia il suo nome con Lee Brilleaux, Wilkinson con Wilko Johnson e con Chris “Whitey” Fenwick alla guida manageriale, le cose stanno per cambiare…e velocemente. All Through The City Dopo il loro secondo viaggio in Olanda, Heinz Burt, il bassista membro fondatore The Tornados, li contatta; Heinz ha un lunga esperienza e, nonostante il suo lavoro consista in vendita di spazi pubbli- citari sui giornali locali, continua ad arrotondare le sue entrate con apparizioni occasionali nel circuito revival, suggerisce così alla band di diventare il suo gruppo di supporto per alcune apparizioni e, con- siderate le ancora rare possibilità di esibirsi, accettano. L’unione dura poco ma culmina in una memorabile apparizione al Wembley Rock’n’Roll Festival nel 1972 accanto a Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bo Diddley e MC5. Negli anni seguenti ritornano a suonare nel circuito locale, un cambiamento è in corso all’interno della scena musicale live, quasi a dispetto dell’incremento della popolarità dei grandi venue, la scena Pub Rock prende piede in un numero sempre più affollato di Pub Londinesi. La band rapidamente si crea una reputazione “anomala”, una recitazione “in yer’face” (provocatoria ed estrema), che appare audace e “anti-fashion” e grottesche esibizioni sul palco catturano l’attenzione della stampa, in un articolo delle NME il giornalista Charles Shaar Murray, assimila il loro atteggia- mento a “Hiroshima in a pint mug”. Nel 1974 si assicurano un contratto con la United Artists a cui segue un tour con Brinsley Schwarz e Hawkwind e il primo album Down by the Jetty realizzato a gennaio dell’anno seguente. Attraverso il 1975 la band si unisce in tourneè a Kokomo e Chilli Willi e ai Red Hot Peppers nel Naughty Rhythms Tour prima di tornare in studio per registrare Malpractice uscito ad ottobre. Solo un anno dopo arriva Stupidity il loro primo album live che li vede, solo dopo una settimana, scalare le classifiche fino al primo posto; momentaneamente procede tutto per il meglio anche se, purtroppo, delle nubi nere stanno arrivando all’orizzonte. Con un’insoddisfazione seguita anche da un disaccordo nell’usare il nome ironico per il brano di Lew Lewis “Lucky Seven” nel loro quarto album Sneaking Suspicion, Wilko prende la decisione di andarsene. Lo sconosciuto John “Gypie” Mayo viene reclutato come sostituto e, attra- verso il frenetico tour del 1977, dimostra di esserne degno, guadagnandosi le acclamazioni sia dalla critica e mass media che da un numero di ansiosi fans. L’intenzione della band di creare propri testi lancia la richiesta d’aiuto ad al- cuni vecchi amici così, a settembre, arriva Be Seeing You prodotto da Nick Lowe e con inspirazioni liriche di Larry Wallis (ex-Pink Fairies). Private Practice, che arriva l’anno dopo, contiene il singolo “Milk and Alcohol”, uno dei più venduti della band, scritto da Nick Lowe e Gypie Mayo narra di di- sastrosi eventi della “vita reale” dopo l’incontro con la Polizia di Los Angeles nel ritorno in hotel dopo un concerto di John Lee Hooker. collaborzione con Musical Box Seguono un altro live album As it Happens del 1979, l’album in studio Let It Roll e A Case of The Shakes, prodotto ancora una volta da Nick Lowe contiene una serie di brani scritti dai talentuosi Lowe, Larry Wallis e dal membro fondatore dei Brinsley Schwartz, il tastierista Bob Andrews; l’album rivela il ritorno ai valori fondamentali per i Feelgood, notato dalla stampa che lo descrive come “Their best album for years”. Continuano incessamente ad esibirsi attorno al globo ma il lungo periodo lon- tano dalla famiglia prende il sopravvento su Gypie Mayo. Sul palco dimostra di essere un ottimo sostituto di Wilko e fuori dal palco dimostra un fiuto per gli eccessi che si misura con ogni membro della band; alla fine, comunque, decide che è il momento di concentrare la sua attenzione sulla famiglia e, ancora una volta, la band si trova a dover reclutare un nuovo membro. Dr Feaelgood Standing at the Crossroads again Seguendo lunghissime audizioni viene trovato un successore nella figura di Johnny “Guitar” Crippen (un tempo membro di Count Bishops), a discapito di un giovane chitarrista di Wembley, Gordon Russel, che suscita particolare interesse ma viene sopraffatto dalla grande esperienza “on the road” di Crip- pen. Nonostante tutto non sarà l’ultima volta che avrà a che fare con la band. Under Republican administrations during the 1970s and 1980s, working Americans encountered new financial challenges as the lion’s share of economic growth benefitted the wealthiest citizens. As socially and politically conscious popular music faded in popularity, Stevie Wonder continued to express his concerns about the obstacles to the promise of freedom and equality that many Americans continued to face. This paper examines four songs, written and performed by Wonder - “Living for the City,” “You Haven’t Done Nothing,” “Happy Birthday,” and “It’s Wrong,” - to track the trajectory of his commentary from local, community-based issues to national, political topics and, finally, to international causes.

Beure alcohol no és gran i no és intel·ligent, però és popular i de vegades és divertit. Per descomptat, no hi ha res de glamour ni a ningú li agrada despertar-se amb la boca seca com una sabata o al costat d'un desconegut/da fent pudor de vòmit i una ressaca que et fa petar el cap com un timbal, però segurament qui més qui menys ha passat per aquesta situació, i contra qualsevol dubte raonable hi tornarà a passar. Al cap i a la fi, el Rock'n'Roll i el ?drinking? van molt de la mà, tant que fins i tot el Jack Daniels amb Coca Cola, ara oficialment se'n diu un Lemmy. Per ser sincers, cap gran història del Rock ha començat amb una amanida verda i un suc. No cal a dir que l'alcohol és perillós, potser l'addicció més perillosa de totes, i que s'hauria de consumir amb moderació, però les probabilitats de beure encara que no es vulgui, hi son. Afortunadament, el consum de begudes alcohòliques no és obligatori, però no deixa de ser una afició molt popular. Com totes les aficions, beure també té una banda sonora. Cançons de festa, cançons per aixecar l'esperit i cançons per fer bullir la sang.
