20040331 Docket: T-292-04 Citation: 2004 FC 488 Ottawa, Ontario, This
Date: 20040331 Docket: T-292-04 Citation: 2004 FC 488 Ottawa, Ontario, this 31st day of March, 2004 Present: THE HONOURABLE MR. JUSTICE von FINCKENSTEIN BETWEEN: BMG CANADA INC., EMI MUSIC CANADA, A DIVISION OF EMI GROUP CANADA INC., SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT (CANADA) INC., UNIVERSAL MUSIC CANADA INC., WARNER MUSIC CANADA LTD., BMG MUSIC, ARISTA RECORDS, INC., ZOMBA RECORDING CORPORATION, EMI MUSIC SWEDEN AB, CAPITOL RECORDS, INC., CHRYSALIS RECORDS LIMITED, VIRGIN RECORDS LIMITED, SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT INC., SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT (UK) INC., UMG RECORDINGS, INC., MERCURY RECORDS LIMITED AND WEA INTERNATIONAL INC. Plaintiffs and JOHN DOE, JANE DOE AND ALL THOSE PERSONS WHO ARE INFRINGING COPYRIGHT IN THE PLAINTIFFS’ SOUND RECORDINGS Defendants REASONS FOR ORDER AND ORDER Page: 2 [1] The plaintiffs (collectively hereinafter called CRIA) are all members of Canada’s recording industry and are bringing this motion to seek disclosure from five Canadian internet service providers, namely Shaw Communications Inc., Rogers Cable Communications Inc., Bell Sympatico, Telus Inc. and Vidéotron Ltée. (hereinafter collectively called ISPs) of the identity of certain customers who, it is alleged, have infringed copyright laws by illegally trading in music downloaded from the internet. [2] The plaintiffs are unable to determine the name, address or telephone number of the 29 internet users in question as they operate under pseudonyms associated with software which they use; e.g., Geekboy @KaZaA. However, they have conducted an investigation, through which, they submit, it was discovered that these individuals used Internet Protocol addresses (IP addresses) registered with the ISPs which are the respondents to this motion. The plaintiffs are now seeking an order, pursuant to Rules 233 and 238 of the Federal Court Rules, 1998, SOR/98-106, to compel the ISPs to disclose the names of the customers who used the 29 IP addresses at times material to these proceedings. -

3 Pain, Misery, Hate and Love All at Once A THEOLOGY OF SUFFERING I remember the period well. It was the months following the 1992 LA Riots. We were young, full of energy, and having bore witness to the destructive forces that tore our community apart, we wanted to change the direction of the ‘hood. So what did we do? We organized gangs, nonprofits and people with like-minded worldviews to create something that had never been done, a gang truce. A fifteen-city organizational effort involving gang leaders, commu- nity organizations and rappers like Tupac, the then lesser known Snoop Dogg and former members of NWA, as well as people who wanted to see a change from the violence of the 1980s, put together posters, banners, flyers and events that helped put a message of peace out in the commu- nity. Large gangs like the Crips and the Bloods came to park BBQ’s to celebrate the newfound peace. MTV covered many of the events. For the first time it seemed as though urban peace was beginning to take shape. I was truly amazed. Especially being as angry as I was after the Rodney King trial verdict, I was beginning to see some change that I could be a part of. We decided that each city needed to take their concerns to City SoulOfHipHop.indb 75 4/26/10 11:13:30 AM 76 THE SOUL OF HIP HOP Hall. We had hoped to file for a “state of emergency” to begin receiv- ing federal funds to clean up our ‘hoods and begin to restore our fam- ilies. -

im Auftrag: medienAgentur Stefan Michel T 040-5149 1467 F 01805 - 060347 90476 [email protected] I KEEP IT TO MYSELF – THE BEST OF WILKO JOHNSON VÖ: 10. Für I Keep It To Myself - The Best Of Wilko Johnson wurden 25 zwischen 2008 und 2012 entstandene Tracks zusammengestellt. Die Band besteht hauptsächlich aus Norman Watt- Roy von den Blockheads (Bass) und Dylan Howe (Drums) – dergleichen Rhythmusgruppe, die auch auf Wilkos Erfolgsalbum Going Back Home mit Roger Daltrey mitgewirkt hatte. Mit neuen Interpretationen der von ihm selbst geschriebenen Dr Feelgood Tracks ‘She Does It Right’, ‘Twenty Yards Behind’, ‘Sneaking Suspicion’ und ‘Roxette’, sowie weiteren lebhaften Songs wie ‘Turned 21’, ‘Some Kind Of Hero’, ‘Out In The Traffic’, Barbed Wire Blues’, ‘Down By The Waterside’ und ‘I Really Love Your Rock 'n' Roll’ ist das Album I Keep It To Myself - The Best Of Wilko Johnson eine wunderbare Sammlung mit energiegeladenem Rhythm & Blues. -
Nostalgia in the Media Representations of Female Folk Singers
Rellstab, D. & N. Siponkoski (toim.) 2015. Rajojen dynamiikkaa, Gränsernas dynamik, Borders under Negotiation, Grenzen und ihre Dynamik. VAKKI-symposiumi XXXV 12.–13.2.2015. VAKKI Publications 4. Vaasa, (25–34). Nostalgia in the Media Representations of Female Folk Singers Noora Karjalainen English Studies University of Vaasa Tämä artikkeli tarkastelee naisfolklaulajien nostalgisia mediarepresentaatioita. Artikkelissa kiinnitetään erityistä huomiota siihen, kuinka laulajien esityskieli vaikuttaa heidän representaatioidensa muodostumi- seen. Artikkelin teoreettisena pohjana on käytetty Astrid Erllin kulttuurisen muistin tutkimusta ja mää- ritelmiä ja Svetlana Boymin nostalgia-analyysiä. Analysoimalla laulajien kuvauksia eri tekstilähteissä artikkelissa pyritään selvittämään mitä yhteyksiä folklaulajien representaatioilla on nostalgiaan ja kult- tuurisen muistin eri tasoihin. Keywords: cultural memory, folk music, folk singers, media representations, nostalgia 1 Introduction Nostalgia has a central part in the construction of a folk singer representation, as well as with the imagery connected to folk singers. The artist types for different genres of music are constructed through and preserved on the collective level of cultural memory; in folk music these types are particularly persistent, even though the artists may not ac- tively perform the stereotypical folk singer image. Thus, because of collective memory, if an artist is referred to as a folk singer it might bring to mind a long haired young woman, often alone on the stage playing the guitar and singing sad songs about lost love and heartbreak. This representation, constructed mostly during the 1960s folk revival by and for Joan Baez, Judy Collins and others, is still the prevalent public representation reserved for female folk singers. This article discusses nostalgic representations of female folk singers in different media sources such as digital publications of magazine articles, interviews, and concert and album reviews. -
