Son succès déchaîna même la critique des Domini cains et des Augustins qui estimaient que l'usage d u nom de « Jésus» sans le titre de « Christ» était une hérésie et que ce culte frisait l'idolâtrie ou la superstition; convoqué à Rome, Bernardin de Sienne soutint une dispute publique en présence de Martin V qui approuva sa doctrine. Un autre Franciscain, Bernardin de Bustis, composa un office et une messe du S. Nom de Jésus en 1492, mais la fête ne fut officiellement au torisée dans l'Ordre qu'en 1530. Elle fut ensuite adoptée par la plupart des Ordres religieux et par de nombreux diocèses.
