SEXUAL SEGREGATION OF RED-BILLED QUELEAS (QUELEA QUELEA) IN THE AWASH RIVER BASIN OF ETHIOPIA M. M. JAEGER, W. A. ERICKSON,AND M. E. Box 5580, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia ABSTRACT.--Evidence is presented supporting a seasonal segregation by sex and age of the Red-billed Quelea (Quelea quelea) in and associatedwith the Awash River Basin of Ethiopia. Sexualsegregation is most pronouncedin the late dry season/earlyrains period (March-June), which precedesbreeding (July-September). At this time the males appear to be more concentrated in the middle Awash Valley, in the general area where breeding will occur, while the females remain more dispersed.A balancedsex ratio is found from July to September.Following breeding there is a general dispersalwith many queleasmoving out to the cereal growing areasthat border the Awash Valley. This processof dispersalresults in a separationof adults from juveniles and, to a lesserdegree, males from females. Received3 October1978, accepted15 February 1979. A DRAMATIC seasonal imbalance has been reported in the sex ratio of the Red- billed Quelea (Queleaquelea) from the Lake Chad Basin (Ward 1965b). This is most pronouncedin the late dry seasonand early rains period, when grassseeds are in relatively short supply. Intraspecific competition for food favoring the larger males is believed to be the most important contributing factor to such an imbalance (Lack 1954, Ward 1965a, Yore-Toy and Ollason 1976). With this explanation, however, it is difficult to account for the return to balance in the sex ratio of adult queleas duringand immediatelyfollowing breeding (Morel and Bourli•re 1956;Ward 1965b, 1972). -

Twenty Rural Communities in Ethiopia and How They Changed: Introducing the WIDE Research and the Selected Policy-Relevant Topics
Twenty rural communities in Ethiopia and how they changed: Introducing the WIDE research and the selected policy-relevant topics Alula Pankhurst, Catherine Dom and Philippa Bevan Rural Ethiopia has undergone rapid change and transformations over the past couple of decades. However, there is limited evidence about what this looks like at a local community level and what it means for different kinds of households and people. The chapters seek to document selected aspects of change and address policy implications of the findings. Overall we suggest that the communities have become less rural and the economies more diversified through processes of growth and urbanisation. This has also led to greater differentiation and increasing inequalities with the formation of elites and widening gaps between the richest and the poorest. We consider the changes in aspirations brought about by greater access to education and migration, and the challenges facing youth and especially girls in their transitions to adulthood. In successive chapters we also document cases of economic success and women’s economic participation, as well as issues of concern for the reproductive health and wellbeing of girls, and mothers and infants. While there have been considerable changes and transformations in the communities and for households and people living within them, there remain concerns relating to gender and youth issues, and the vulnerable who are still at risk of being left behind as the country strives to reach lower middle income status. This chapter comprises four parts. In the first we introduce the history of the WIDE research over twenty years from 1994 through to 2014. -

MAYFEB Journal of Biology and Medicine Vol 1 (2017) - Pages 1-12 Diversity, Abundance and Distribution of Mammals in Fragmented Remnant Forests around Asella Town, Ethiopia Mohammed Kasso, Dire Dawa University, [email protected] Afework Bekele, Addis Ababa University, [email protected] Abstract- Survey on diversity, relative abundance, and distribution of mammals in fragmented remnant montane forest of Child Care Center and School of Agriculture was conducted from March to July 2013. Trapping, lines transect and indirect survey techniques were used. Information on abundance and species composition of matured trees was collected. Data were organized and analyzed using descriptive statistics. A total of 22 species of mammals belonging to five orders were recorded. From the trapped species of mammals, Stenocephalemys albipes was most abundant while Arvicanthis abyssinicus was least. From non-trapped groups of mammals, the most abundant was Colobus guereza whereas Leptailurus serval and Poecilogale albinucha were least recorded. Most of the species were widely distributed. However, Mus mahomet, Arvicanthis abyssinicus, Redunca redunca and Chlorocebus pygerythrus were recorded only from the School of Agriculture and in the same way Papio anubis was recorded from Child Care Center. The majority of the species (13) belonging to 108 individuals were recorded from thick canopy forest and nine species from grassland habitat. Plantation with secondary growth habitat was the most diversified habitat while grassland was the least. As the area is rich in mammal and other species, urgent conservation action is highly recommended. Keywords: Habitat fragmentation, mammal, montane forest, relative abundance, species composition. I. Abstract Salmonella is one of the most common causes of food-borne diarrheal disease in human as well as animals. It is leading causes of acute gastroenteritis when ingested in contaminated foods, including meat and dairy products. Moreover, the emergence of multiple-resistant (MDR) isolates is increasing in human and veterinary medicines. Therefore, this cross-sectional study aims at isolation, identification and antibiogram of Salmonella from selected dairy cattle farms, abattoir and in contact humans in both dairy farms and abattoir of Asella, Ethiopia. -

Ethiopian Agricultural Business Corporation was established in Ethiopian Agricultural December 2015, following the merger of five Ethiopian state-owned enterprises, namely Ethiopian Seed Enterprise, Agricultural Equipment Business Corporation and Technical Services Share Company, Agricultural Inputs Supply Enterprise, Natural Gum Processing and Marketing Enterprise, and Corporate data Headquarters: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia Agricultural Mechanization Service Enterprise. The company is the Ownership type: State-owned largest field crop seed producer and supplier in Ethiopia, in addition to Group revenue (2017): ETB 42,089,070 Seed revenue (2017): ETB 28,002,082 supplying other agricultural inputs. Being state-owned, the company is supervised by the Ministry of Agriculture. Smallholder farmers www.ethioagribusco.com constitute the company’s main clientele. Eastern and Southern Africa Ethiopian Agricultural Business Corporation ranks ninth in the Eastern 9 and Southern Africa Index, significantly improving upon the rank out of 22 performance and score of subsidiary score 2.10 Ethiopian Seed Supply Sector (previously Ethiopian Seed Enterprise) in 2016. The company’s extensive distribution network and close association with farmer groups and cooperatives are reflected in its performance in Marketing & Sales. In Seed Production, the company discloses corporate commitments to engaging smallholder farmers, including women. The company owes its performance in Governance & Strategy to board-level accountability and a diverse range of activities to develop the local seed sector, while its maize breeding program and multiple testing locations contribute to a strong score in Research & Development. The company discloses limited information about its corporate strategies and policies concerning Genetic Resources. Meanwhile, Capacity Building resources are directed toward the company’s smallholder producers rather than customers, limiting its scoring potential.
